Chapter 1 (Pt. 3) - Evelyn

"Fine, I'll come to your fancy grass party. I need something classy though, I think I saw that little frou-frou black dress of yours in the wash somewhere." Viktor teased, and slipped out of the room. He only went outside, and Evelyn rolled her lush eyes. "That boy is never serious about anything in life." Evelyn grumbled quietly. It was the most annoying part of coming here. That boy would need a serious incident to whip him into shape, she imagined. Otherwise he was never going to change. Little did she know how serious the incident would end up being. And how drastically it would change this family's lives forever.

Outside, the girls brought the plate of sandwiches and a jug of strawberry lemonade. A truly honorable brunch. "Sweet! Thank you, lovely ladies." Camilo said, a triangle sandwich in each hand. "This is delicious!" He chomped down on the sandwiches.

Evelyn laughed quietly. "Well now, nice to have a gentleman in the house." She noted, eyes narrowing faintly at Viktor where he sat. "Huh-?" The boy murmured, confused. "What did I do, Chickee?" He asked. "Don't either of you two start. This is my garden party." Amelia spoke out against them, and sat in the grass. Her baby blue sundress covered her legs, which she tucked beneath her.

Evelyn bit into her sandwich, and cast her gaze toward the reflective blue sky. It was serene at this house. A mock-monarch fluttered through the air, rising and falling as though it was the breath of the earth propelling it into the sky. A bluebird chirped gayly on the branch of a tree not far from them.

"Hey, Chickee, did you know that leeches have thirty-two brains?" Viktor's voice, as expected, broke through the peace. "Gross!" Amelia squirmed, and shuffled closer toward Evelyn. The blonde just gawked at her friends' brother. Evelyn actually thought that was pretty cool. That was the kind of fact she might write a report on in biology. "Not while we're eating! Goodness gracious!" She shivered.

"I think it's awesome to think about leeches when you eat. People can be leech-like." Viktor shrugged. He then smirked up at his older brother, and whispered something toward him. Camilo snorted, then playfully shoved his brother off to the side. "Grow up, man." Camilo grinned, then stood up. "This is a party, right? Who wants to dance?" He asked, and performed a little bow. Viktor cheerily smiled and copied his brother's movements.

"Oh, me!" Amelia slowly made her way to her feet, sure she was as lady-like as could be. Evelyn scrambled to her feet. "Hey, nobody said that we'd have t-" She broke off when Amelia went up to Camilo, who proceeded to try and teach her to waltz.

It was a routine they'd been practicing for a while, since Amelia's sixteenth birthday was in a few months. Evelyn smiled, thinking the gesture rather sweet. The picking might be annoying, but maybe it would have been nice to have an older brother to care for and protect her. Well, that duty would instead fall upon a boyfriend. Whenever she got one.

"May I have this dance?" Viktor extended a hand toward Evelyn. Her nose wrinkled in distaste, before she shook her head. "No way. You're not invited to my Sweet Sixteen, jerkface." The girl huffed. Her sapphire eyes rolled in masked embarrassment. Evelyn couldn't dance very well, but there was no need for Viktor to figure that out and make fun of her for it. Surely he would. "Oh! That's soon, right?" Viktor perked up, and then started walking toward the little shed in the backyard. Evelyn crossed her arms, and grabbed the plates and cups left on the grass.

The adolescent entered the kitchen once more, and watched. She saw Amelia and Camilo laughing as they danced. That boy was pretty good-looking himself. If Trevor were out of the equation, and Evelyn waited a few years, she would have to keep him in mind.

The girl was leaning over the counter, still watching the dance when he walked in. "Hey, you disappeared on me, Chickee." Viktor snickered. Evelyn grumbled and straightened out. "As a matter of fact, you sir, are the one who left first." She quipped, a small smirk on her face. Viktor shrugged, an acknowledgment she supposed. Then he stepped closer, and held something out to her. A little box, covered in blue wrapping paper. "This was your favorite color, last I checked. The dark-ish blue. So I wrapped it up with-"

"Well now that's my second favorite color, so," Evelyn looked away toward the window. Admittedly, though, she was surprised someone so unfocused would remember that little detail about her. It caused her cheeks to flush with warmth. "... Thanks, Viktor." She glanced back at him.

Knowing there was absolutely no way he could've given her anything she wanted, Evelyn took the box. She pulled the string, peeled off the paper, and paused solely to watch Viktor's anticipation grow.

Evelyn pulled the lid open, and... it was a knife. Sheesh. Boring. He may as well have gotten her a flashlight. "And it's a flashlight, too! A tanto blade that measures a 200 on the BESS scale, and a light with 500 lumens!" By the way he spoke with the heightened excitement, Evelyn could tell that this thing was probably expensive. For some reason. Not that she cared. She was the girl who had everything, anyway. Except for Trevor. But he'd soon fall for her at her party.

Evelyn sighed quietly, and allowed a small smile to cross her pink lips. "Okay, Viktor. You're invited to my party." She held out a hand for a shake. He spat in his, and she quickly pulled back. "I don't mind doing a boyish thing, but that's going to be a no." Evelyn chortled lightly.

"Ooh, Viktor and Evelyn sittin' in a tree," Camilo poked his head into the room, a playful grin on his face. "Ugh- no!" Evelyn scoffed, fists clenched. Her face warmed again, and Viktor shot his brother a look she didn't see. Camilo just snickered, and entered the kitchen to get some water.

"You should head back, Evelyn. Your father texted me, since you, miss ma'am, probably left your phone at home." The older boy noted toward her, and sipped at the rim of his water glass. In the water, the reflection of his lime-green eyes, which he shared with his brother Viktor, was the last time Evelyn would see this strapping young man. If only she'd known. She would've hugged him, or asked for more wisdom. Maybe even some help with college prep for the future. But no. She just turned away, and vanished out of the house, without so much as a goodbye.
