"You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it"
When we arrive by the hall, Aragorn throws the doors open and stands before the king and his men. Slowly the Ranger walks up to the king. 'We have to prepare for battle! A great host is on his way!' He yells, silencing everyone. Théoden, who sits on his throne, looks shocked. 'You fell' Is the first thing he says. Aragorn stands now before him, with me and Gimli and Legolas besides him. Legolas has almost invisible, his hand on his friend's shoulder, for comforting but also for helping him stand.
You can't see it but Aragorn is exhausted.
'Yes I fell, but I am here now to tell you all that a great host is on his way!' Aragorn hisses, angered by the king, who is denying Aragorn's warnings. Théoden signs and falls back in his throne. 'A great host, you say?'
'All Isengard is emptied' Aragorn answers. 'How many?' The king asks emotionless, staring at the Ranger. 'Ten thousand strong at least' Théoden looks like he doesn't believe it. 'Ten thousand?'
'It is an army bred for a single purpose ... to destroy the world of Men' Aragorn says griming. 'They will be here by nightfall' He continues. Théoden stands up from his throne and walks through the hall, he is considering his options, but we all know what he is going to do. He is going to lock us in, let the army come and it wipes us away..
'Let them come!' The king exclaims and walks out of the hall.
Just what I thought and I look to Legolas. He is shaking his head and when he meets my eyes, I can see the fear in his.
We are immortal, but only heart-break and falling in battle can kill us.
Do I want to die in a battle where I don't belong?
This is not what we as fellowship agreed too, right?
I don't remember anymore, we are gone from home for almost six or seven months..
Someone shakes my shoulders and I wake up from my daydreaming. Aragorn's tired but also concerned face is before my own. 'Meleth?' (Love)
'It was nothing, just thinking.. I tell you about it later' He nods and his hand grasps my hand and together with Gimli and Legolas, we follow the king towards the battlements. The king and Gamling walk around, pointing to certain points. 'I want every man and strong lad able to bear arms to be ready for battle by nightfall' Théoden orders Gamling and with that the man is dismissed. The king turns to us. 'The plan is like this, We will cover the causeway and the gate from above. No army has ever breached the Deeping Wall or set foot inside the Hornburg!' Gimli looks bored towards the plains. 'This is no rabble of mindless Orcs. These are Uruk-Hai. Their armor is thick and their shields broad' The Dwarf says almost angry. 'I have fought many wars, Master Dwarf. I know how to defend my own Keep' The king answers Gimli and walks back to the keep. Silently we walk after the king, we all know Gimli is right. The king leads us towards the end of the battlement, overlooking the plains. 'They will break upon this fortress like water on rock. Saruman's hordes will pillage and burn. We've seen it before. Crops can be renown; homes rebuilt. Within these walls, we will outlast them' Théoden adds. Aragorn steps closer to the king, holding still his hand in my own. 'They do not come to destroy Rohan's crops or villages. They come to destroy its people ... down to the last child!' Aragorn says, I can hear he is angry. 'What would you have me do? Look at my Men. Their courage hangs by a thread!' The king says quietly, angry. Ashamed Aragorn looks away, knowing what the king means. 'If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance' The king adds and walks away. 'Send out riders, my lord. You must call for aid!' Aragorn pleads, turning towards the king. The king turns around and comes over towards Aragorn. 'And who will come? Elves? Dwarves? We are not so lucky in our friends as you. The old alliances are dead' He says doubtfully. 'Gondor will answer!' I say, trying to lift the kings spirit up. Théoden looks at me with anger in his eyes. 'Gondor!' He cries out angrily. 'Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell? Where was Gondor when our enemies closed in around us?! Where was Gon--?' He recollects himself and turns back at Aragorn. 'No, my Lord Aragorn...we are alone' Again he turns around and walks away towards the hall, Gamling following close. 'Get the women and children into the caves' I hear the king say. I turn around, not wanting to hear more..
'Tíro nin' (look at me) Aragorn stands before me, behind him Legolas and Gimli. 'Savo amdir' (Have hope) He whispers and kisses me gently. 'You are my hope' I say and he smiles.
Soon we have our orders and the Women and the Children of Edoras have to go, hiding into the caves. It is an organized movement and the people are walking together, with the soldiers assisting the elderly. Trying to get everyone quickly into the caves. I see also Éowyn, she looks distressed and tries to get out of the mass. 'Eleniel!' She cries out and pushes her way out. 'They are sending me towards the caves! Why can't I fight with you and your friends?' She asks angry. I sign. 'This is not my decision'
'You have to go with her' Aragorn suddenly speaks up from behind me. Shocked I turn around. He was making a round with Legolas, explaining his battle plan. Or so he told me. 'But, I thought'
'Gi Melin, Eleniel. I don't want you getting hurt or worse' He expression softens and he looks fearful. 'Look after each other' He says and pushes me with Éowyn into the moving crowd. I am pushed forward by the women and children. 'Aragorn!' I scream with fury.
How can he do this!
He looks to me and when I am pushed into the caves, he turns around.
The cries of the children fill my ears and I am happy Éowyn is with me. He hold my hand firmly and leads me towards an more quieter place. We rest with our backs against the stone wall. 'Men' She mutters.
'I do not understand' I say, now more feeling sad. 'Let us rest' Éowyn says and smiles. We sit down.
Now we can only wait.
After a while I hear the sound of rain and thunder. Children shriek and cry out in fear. But when the Uruk begin to pound their spears on the ground, the women also whimper in agony. 'Is there no way out?' I ask Éowyn frantically. 'One' She whispers and I hear the fear in her voice. But before I can comfort her, my head feels like it is exploding. Suddenly I am not in the cave anymore, but I am with Legolas and Gimli. They are standing by the battlement, ready to fight. I see Haldir! And the elven archers from Lothlórien, Aragorn commands them.
How quickly it happened, it is quickly over. I am back with Éowyn. She looks at me in fear. 'Eleniel?' She looks pale and when I pay attention, the whole cave is silent and looks at me. 'You fainted..' Éowyn explains. 'I..' I take a deep breath. All these women are afraid for their children, their husbands. 'I saw them, outside these walls. Help has arrived, my kin. The elves of Lothlórien have come' These words ease some of the worry these women have. The whisper comfortable words to their children. 'Éowyn' I ask the my new friend. 'Is there a place where I can pray?' She looks surprised. 'Yes, over there' She point towards a dark corner close by'
'Hannon Le' I stand up and walk towards the place she pointed to. There I fall on my knees and begin to pray. Praying towards my parents. Begging them to help me, help these people.
I feel suddenly so light and I hear the calming words of my mother ring in my ears. 'Henig, this is why we send you to middle earth, to help these people' My chest feels like it is going to explode. I feel the power flow within me.
This is who I am, my memories are flooding back. I know who I am.
This is why I am here, to end Sauron.
I open my eyes again, the women and children in the cave look at me in fear and amazement.
'Who is she?' I hear them ask. 'I am here to help you' i say in a calm voice.
This is not the time to tell them who I am.
Whose daughter I am.
'Open' I say towards the big stone doors and the doors open at the sound of my voice. I smile and take my sword out of the sheath. 'Naneth, Ada Tiro nin' (Watch over me) I whisper and run out of the doors, closing them with my mind.
The battle cries overwhelm me, I a second I am in the middle of the fighting. Uruks are climbing over the wall. I listen carefully, trying to hear my friends. 'Legolas! Two already!' I hear Gimli yell in excitement. I shake my head while I run towards them. An Uruk appears on my path and with one slice of my sword he lies dead on the ground. 'I'm on seventeen!' I hear Legolas yell.
Such dorks..
'I'll have no pointy-ear outscoring me!' Gimli cries outraged. He slices another Uruk, who is climbing over the wall, dead. 'Need any help?'
'Eleniel?' Gimli and Legolas turn quickly around. 'Duck!' I say and the do so. I stab the Uruk right in his heart.
Dead.
'Two' I grin. 'But, how?' Legolas asks bewildered.
'I am the daughter of the king, the right hand of Eru. I know why I am here' I answer the shocked princeling.
'Let all Uruk-Hai die' I command in my head. I expect them to die now and that we have won. But that is not the case, there are more to come. How is this possible? I want it, it should happen. This time I whisper the command but still nothing happens.
Again my head feels like it is exploding. 'iell nín' (My daughter) My Ada's stern voice sounds in my ears and I open my eyes. I am back on the balcony in Valinor. 'This is not the right way to use your powers child. Because if that was the case, we have done it already' He speaks to me.
Ow..
I bow my head in shame. 'Goheno nin' (Forgive me)
'There is nothing to forgive' He lifts my chin up and he smiles at me. 'Go now and help your friends. Help the people of Arda, because your time has come. But remember, you cannot command to let people live again, or for them to be immortal. Also you cannot command for a whole race to die. But you know when the time comes, when you need it' I step forward and hug him. 'Hannon Le, I shall not let you down'
'I know you won't'
And with that I am back. Legolas and Gimli are with their backs at me, defending me. Again I fainted, so I stand up quickly and rejoin the battle. 'Lassie!' Gimli cries out. 'I am okay Gimli' I reassure him and smile before I stab an Uruk twice. 'I felt the power' Legolas says and fires arrow after arrow. I duck and stab an Uruk in his leg, he falls forward and I kick him in his abdomen. He grunts and I take his life with a swift stroke of my swords. 'Yes, I was with my father' Legolas eyes grow wide. 'I explain everything later, now we have to end this battle!'
'Gurth enin goth!' Legolas yells and fires more arrows at the invaders. (Dead to the enemy's!)
'Na fennas!' I hear Aragorn suddenly yell. All three of us look down at the main road towards the causeway. A turtle like form is moving towards the causeway and the elven archers fire arrow after arrow at hem. But with every Uruk they kill, another joins. Two Uruk-Hai carry a spiked ball towards the sluice gate and they make a clear path so another Uruk can make a clear run towards the gate. 'Togo hon dad, Legolas!' (Bring him down, Legolas!) Aragorn yells at the princeling. Legolas does what he is commanded and fires several arrows while Gimli and I protect him from the incoming Uruks. But the Uruk continues to run. 'Dago hon! Dago hon!' (kill him! Kill him!) Aragorn screams at the Elven Archers but the Uruk reaches the spiked balls and with a great explosion we are thrown of the wall. I hit the ground and everything around my fades in black.
