Kathreen
Half storm spirit? Was that even possible? Well apparently it was. Nico looked around, everyone was staring at her as well. Even Chiron, though he looked like he'd suspected it all along.
Jason spoke, "So are you a Boread then?" Kathreen snapped her head over to look at Jason. She narrowed her eyes.
"If you mean a Boread storm spirit, yes I am half Boread storm spirit, but I am not a Boread in the sense of being part of his court."
"Oh." Was all Jason said in response to that. Even with all the sky related stuff he knew, this was entirely uncharted territory for him. "Are there more of you?" He continued. Kathreen flashed him a loathing look.
"What do you mean." She said, feigning innocence.
"More half Boreads of course." Jason replied. Nico was impressed that he was putting up with Kathreen despite her obvious hatred of him. Kathreen sighed slightly and answered.
"Yes, a few."
There was something about the way she said it, like there were others like her that weren't Boreads. A strange possibility started to form in Nico's mind . . .
"Kathreen." Nico said. She looked over at him, like she was surprised he'd spoken. Of course she was. At least she didn't hate him. He ignored it and continued. "Are there others like you? Not just Boreads, half . . ." He hesitated, then continued as then truth came to him. "Half Monster?"
Kathreen looked like he had said the worst possible thing. She looked more terrified than she had a second ago when Chiron had been questioning her. It was clear she didn't want to answer, even more than she hadn't wanted to answer earlier. She seemed to choke on the words on the words as she spoke, but she did answer.
"I . . . I can't say. All of . . . my kind, we're under oath not to reveal ourselves. It's ages old. It's a oath on the Styx."
"Like how old is this oath?" said Jason. He seemed skeptical.
"Five thousand?" She said, then sighed. "Monsters, they hate us. They used to kill us out of spite whenever they saw us, and we couldn't defend ourselves, we had no training and killing them . . ." She trailed off. "From what we've heard . . . Imagine you had to kill your godly parent. Do you think you could do it? And I don't mean that they're so much more powerful than you." Nico exchanged a look with Will and Jason. Could this actually be true? "Or trying kill a sibling." She added when we didn't react much to her first example. That struck home. Nico's stomach flipped in horror and revulsion as he imagined trying to harm Hazel or Bianca.
"That's awful." Will said. "But how could you feel like you were killing your own if they were trying to kill you?" Kathreen snorted.
"Oh, we know better now. Though we would never kill a monster unless it struck first. If we could anyway."
"What do you mean by that?" Chiron said.
"It's part of our oath. We cant kill any monsters or reveal ourselves, and in return they leave us alone and give us a place to live, though they can still kill us if provoked." She did air quotes when she said provoked. Obviously, the monsters had the upper hand in this deal.
"Why would monsters want to keep you a secret?" Chiron asked. "Why would they care?" Kathreen gave him a sad look.
"Because we're an embarassment. Monsters kill demigods, and yet they create demi humans that are like them. Do you see the irony?"
"Oh . . ." Chiron seemed sympathetic. "So they'll just kill you?"
"Yeah . . . apparently, when they used to kill us, they didn't care how old we were, because there was no glory to be gained from killing us. We're just de-" She stopped suddenly and slapped her hands over her mouth. "Oh gods, that was close. Please don't ask me anything else!" She said through her hands. Her eyes were pleading, and Nico felt sorry for her.
"One more thing?" Chiron asked. She looked at him, then nodded and removed her hands. "How many of you are there, and where is this place you said the monsters gave you to live?"
"That's two." she said. Chiron gave her a stern look and she sighed. "There aren't many of us, or many kinds. Only humanoid monsters can have kids with mortals, obviously. Currently there's twenty one of us, six Boreads, five southern storm spirits, five Cyclopes, four harpies, and one werewolf."
"In the whole world?" Nico asked. There were over a hundred demigods at Camp Half Blood alone. But only just over twenty of her kind in the world?
"We think so, yes."
"And where do you live?" Chiron continued.
"Tartarus." She sighed.
"What?" Nico spluttered. Kathreen looked startled.
"We live on this giant rock ledge about as far up in Tartarus as you can go. You can see the ground from the edge of camp, but it's faint. Don't ask me where, because I don't know. There's a giant Pheglethon waterfall at one edge of camp, so maybe below the Fields of Punishment somewhere?" They live in Tartarus? Nico thought. He felt sick.
Ok, hi. Word on the picture, yes that is the Maximum Ride manga, but I used to have one saved that I'd painted and designed to look like Kathreen, but I lost it so you get this. Don't know when the next update will be. Maybe another week? Please comment! Bye!
