I Give/Get A Tour
Nico POV
"So, Kathreen." Chiron said. "Is there anything else we need to know?" She gave Chiron an annoyed look. Like she was thinking, 'quit asking me stuff, I don't want to answer.' Of course she sighed and responded.
"Not really, like I said, the oath prevents us from getting involved in mythical business."
"Ok," he continued. "How long do you think it will be until your wing heals?" Her eyebrows furrowed as she considered this.
"I don't know. Andrea would be the person to ask, she's kind of like our librarian, she keeps all the records that we do have. But she's not here obviously."
"So you don't know?" Will said. She shook her head.
"You could stay here," he offered. "Chiron what do you think?" Chiron nodded.
"I think she should stay here until she's fully healed." Then he turned to me. "Nico, do you think you could give Kathreen a tour?"
"Uh, sure."
Kathreen swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up, but a soon as she did she tilted to the side and would have fallen had Will not caught her. Seeming confused Kathreen reached behind her and waved her hand through her injured wing. It didn't react, as if it were only an image.
"You have got to be kidding me." She groaned.
"What is it?" Will asked. She was now leaning against the bed to keep herself from falling over.
"Apparently my left wing is more than injured. It's barely there. It should come back, and until then I can do this." She straightened up and folded her right wing so tightly against her body that it wasn't even visible.
"Are you sure that'll work?" Will asked her. She nodded.
"I do it all time when I swim."
Seeing that she was fine, Chiron and the others left. Jason seemed the most reluctant to leave. He probably wanted to keep asking her questions. Kathreen sent him a warning glance and he left immediately. Then she walked over to me.
"So you're going to give me a tour of this place?" She smiled.
"Yes. Come on." I replied and she followed me out the door.
Kathreen POV
We stepped outside and I gasped. Somehow, though I'd seen Camp Half Blood before, being there instead of viewing it from the sky was another experience entirely. As I walked through the camp it was almost like living a dream . . .
"Why are you staring at everything like that?" Nico was looking at me like I'd gone nuts. "Haven't you ever been to summer camp before?" I blushed and erased the awe he must have seen on my face.
"So how come you fell to the side without a wing?" Nico asked randomly after showing me the cabins. I blinked. "I mean, wouldn't you fall to the side with a wing, since it would have weight." I smiled.
"Well, my wings actually sort of have negative weight." Nico gave me a look like he thought I'd gone nuts. "Weight is the measure of the force that you're pulled to the earth with. My wings are made out of air, fast moving powerful storm winds. There's enough force from them pushing against the ground that don't weigh anything. Even less that something."
"Then how come you don't float away?" Nico asked. I laughed, imagining it.
"My wings would, if they weren't anchored to me. Anyway, with one side of me weighing less than I really do, and the other side normal, it totally throws off my equilibrium." Nico nodded.
"If your wings are that powerful, isn't holding them against your back uncomfortable?" I shrugged.
"Kind of, but not really." He nodded, and that ended our conversation.
As we walked through the camp I got quite a few odd looks, a few people who said hi, and this one ten year old kid who just stared. Gossip must spread like wildfire here.
"Come on," Nico said. "I'll take you to see the forges next."
"Oh, sounds fun." Ugh, the summer heat and heat of "home" are bad enough.
As we approached a scrawny Latino boy came running out holding a flaming hammer with a crazed grin on his face.
"You're that winged girl," he said, then paused. "Where's your other wing?" I pulled my wing out from behind me so he could see. He grinned. "Cool, I'm Leo." I knew who he was, the hero who killed Gaea, but I had decided not to care. I'd already met a lot of famous demigods.
"I'm Kathreen." I smiled a wide smile, and Leo blinked looking shocked.
"Whoa. Serious twenty karat smile." He said, and then looked at me closer.
"Do I know you from somewhere?" I shook my head. "Are you sure? Maybe I met you while I was on the run?" I shook my head again.
"Trust me, we've never met." I told him.
"Are you sure? You look really familiar."
"I'm certain you've never seen me before. We can't let demigods see us."
"We?" Confusion colored his voice and I realized that he wouldn't know what I meant. Gossip couldn't travel that fast. Except for maybe some children of Aphrodite.
"Let's go." Nico said. "I'll show you the arena next."
"Any idea what that was about?" I asked Nico. He shrugged.
"Not a clue."
As soon as I stepped into the arena I was startled by a loud WOOF! I turned and saw a massive hellhound the size of a truck bounding towards me. In a panic I attempted to take off, but with only one wing I flew to the right and crashed to the ground, where the hellhound tackled me and proceeded to repeatedly lick me. I got covered in giant dog spit and it didn't take long for me to start laughing.
"Down girl!" Nico said, running over to get the dog off of me. "I see you've met Mrs. Oleary." He said.
"A hellhound has a name?" I asked.
"She's friendly."
"Obviously." I replied. I turned to the hellhound and reached up to scratch her neck. Huh, here I was, a half monster being kissed by the what was probably the world's only friendly hellhound.
Small world.
