Kennedy's POV
I hate Yahtzee, too much math involved, who invented this game anyway? Pepper and Tony decided today that since we're officially a family, we should play a game together and bond, or some such nonsense, I mean it's not like I've been living with them for almost a year or anything. But whatever, cuz now we're playing yahtzee and I am attempting to add up my score.
"I really need to get you enrolled in school." Pepper comments Noticing how long it takes me to do the math. I make a disgusted face.
"Awe, really?" I complain, "Do I have to?"
"There's no avoiding it, you need some real education." She insists, taking her turn.
"But i've done perfectly fine so far with only basic school." I plead looking to Tony for support.
"Peppers right," Tony says, rolling his dice, "You don't even know your multiplication tables, school is a must." I sigh, if there both against me then there's almost no point in trying. I resign myself to adding up my points the best I can. "Don't be so dramatic, Peter goes to school and he doesn't complain about it."
"Yes he does." I moap, passing the dice back to pepper.
"Okay maybe he does, but he lives with it doesn't he?"
"Peter warned me that this would happen one day." I mumble under my breath, much to the amusement of the other two. When the game is over none of us move to get up, we're content to sit on the floor and enjoy each other's company. I ask more questions about what life will be like now. They ask me more questions about about my past, and I tell them stories, some pleasant and funny, others not so much. I tell them a story about my hat blowing off my head and out into the middle of a lake, and the mess i went through to get someone to take me out to get it. When I finish the story Tony speaks up,
"What's so special about that hat? I've never even seen that logo before." My smile from telling the funny story instantly disappears. I look down, should I tell them? It's such a personal story, but they are family now, they deserve to know. I look back up with resolution, bracing myself to tell the story.
"You probably don't recognize the logo because the company doesn't exist anymore. The logo is for a company called Zap, it's a clean energy company. My dad worked there, he was an engineer. At one point I was having some trouble studying for a particular test a school, to motivate me to study my dad told me that if I got a good grade on the test he would give me a surprise. When I told him my grade on the test he presented me with this hat, I was kinda mad at him, I was expecting a chocolate bar or a ticket to the movies, not a dumb old hat. Unfortunately I was pretty rude about it, I told him I didn't want it and went up to my room for bed. I pouted all through breakfast the next morning." I pause for a moment, taking a deep shaking breath, remembering what comes next. "That day when I got off the bus dad wasn't waiting for me like always, I thought he must be at the house making dinner or something so i walked down the street to the house, but the door is locked, I knocked on the door, I ring the doorbell, I even went through the gate to check the back door, but it was locked too. I finally went over to my neighbor's house, she had babysat me before so I knew she would help. When I told her that my dad wasn't home yet, she said I could come in, then she called my dad's cell phone number, there was no answer. She called the company office but there was no response there either. She told me not to worry, and sat me down with her to watch tv. She clicked through and landed on a news station with the headline "Malfunction at Zap power plant results in major explosion. I remember her gasping and turning off the television, then she asked me to go play in the other room, I did, though I didn't want to. She turned the tv back on and I tried to hear what it was saying from the other room, the only word I managed to hear was 'Casualties' But I didn't know what that meant at the time. I ate dinner there and my neighbor didn't say anything to me about the news. A police officer showed up at the door a few hours later. You can fill in the rest." I finish, not a single tear fell from my eyes, I just sit with my eyes trained on the wall in front of me, completely consumed in the memory, I can remember the officer explaining to me that I had to go with him, and taking me to a big building where someone explained to me what happened, And I remember crying for hours and screaming no, absolutely sure that they were wrong. I feel strong arms slip around my shoulders, I lean into the protective grip, no one says anything else, Pepper joins the embrace and there we remain, a ball of emotional carnage sitting on the floor for hours. I drift to sleep in this position, feeling the love that surrounds me, and feeling more grateful than ever for someone to care for me, I'v taken care of myself for so long, it's the greatest feeling in the world to fall asleep knowing that there are once again people around me who want to take care of me.
