Chapter 27: Crashing

Peter's POV

I take a deep breath through my nose and relax at the familiar smell that surrounds me in the house. With my one arm that's not swaddled in a sling, I adjust the backpack on my shoulder and start up the stairs to my room.

"Peter I need to talk to you." Mays serious voice stops me. Oh no, she must have found my spiderman suit. I nervously turn and walk back down the stairs until i'm standing in front of her.

"Yeah, what's up." I try to conceal the nerves in my voice.

"Peter I don't want you working at stark industries anymore." THIS IS SO MUCH WORSE THAN HER FINDING OUT ABOUT SPIDERMAN! How am I supposed to respond to this? I just stand there unable to speak for several seconds.

"What?! Why?!" I exclaim when I get my voice back.

"It's too dangerous, just look what happened, I don't want you testing new technologies and getting hurt." She holds onto my shoulders.

"But that jet wasn't even a prototype! It was tried and tested, and Mr. Stark had traveled in it a hundred times! There's just as much chance for the same thing to happen to me on any normal plane!" I protest.

"Peter there wasn't even a pilot on the plane, there was no opportunity for a human being with real experience to try and land the plane property." She sits down at one of the kitchen chairs. I run my good hand through my tangled hair in frustration. Not knowing what else to say. "Why is this so important to you, it's just an internship, there will be other opportunities, better ones."

"You don't understand, it's not just about the internship! Because Mr. Stark, Mr. Stark, he took me under his wing, and he wants me to be the best that I can be, He's taught me so much and he cares about me." My voice starts to crack at this point in my speech. "And Kennedy, she's, she's my best friend, she's, she's....."

"Special, I know Honey. And I'm not saying you can't see her, I just don't want it to be at Stark Tower." She looks at me firmly, I stare back at her through watery eyes, I say the only thought left in my head,

"You can't take this away from me."

"I've already made up my mind, I'm sorry Peter, I just don't want you getting hurt anymore." I turn my back and bound up the stairs to my room and continue to fight the threatening flow of tears. I feel like my small world is crashing just a violently as the Jet crashed a few days ago. After staring out my window for a few minutes, I hear my phone ringing in my pocket, I pull it out and see Kennedy's name on the screen, I take a deep breath before answering.

"Hello?"

"Hey Peter! I'm so glad you're out of the hospital, I wanted to come and visit you but I got this terrible cold. By the way you might want to steer clear of the tower for a few days because we are all basically completely incapacitated. But I almost wish you would come because I miss you so much, but I wouldn't want you to be sick on top of having a broken arm. Anyway, How are you?"

"I um," I pauses for a long moment, not knowing what to tell her. "I'm fine."

"Is, everything okay?" Her horse voice responds. I lean back in my chair and rub a hand over my eyes..

"Yeah, everything's great. But I uh, I gotta go." I lie, not knowing I can't keep talking to her without breaking down.

"Oh. . . okay, I'll talk to you soon then?"

"Yeah, talk to you soon." I hang up and sit in silent self pity until I fall asleep at my desk.

Kennedy's POV

I hang up the phone and hand it back to Tony, who immediately senses the uneasiness in my expresion.

"You okay Firecracker?"

"Yeah, it's just. . . Peter was acting really distant on the phone." Pepper comes over to check my temperature, and says.

"He just got home, and he went through a lot more trauma then you. Just give him some time and he'll be back to his old self." I nod and smile, but in the solitude of my own mind, I can't help but worry that something is wrong. But I let that thought go for the moment and and devote my full attention back to letting my immune system cure me of disease.

A week passes by slowly and by the end of it most of us are feeling mostly better. The only problem is that this week went by without a single call from Peter. This is definitely not normal, there has to be something wrong. I should call him and make sure he's okay. But what if he didn't call me because he doesn't want to talk to me? What if he thinks I'm annoying? What if he doesn't even want to be friends anymore. I shake my head and jump up off my bed, we're best friends, he wouldn't just randomly decide he doesn't like me anymore, he'll call me soon, I know he will. I leave my room and head down to find Pepper and Tony, pausing momentarily in front of Peters vacant room before back on my mission to find a status report on the court case.

"How's it going?" I ask as I bound into the kitchen and snatch a bag of chips from Tony's hand. He glares at me but answers,

"Not great, your mom keeps pushing that the plane crash if proof of how dangerous I am." He steals his chips back from me as he finishes.

"I can't believe her, the plane crash was a total accident." I huff.

"Of course it was, but a plane crash that injured a dozen high school kids is a pretty big deal, the judge can't just make a ruling without some investigation." Pepper explains.

"I'm just glad none of the parents are trying to sue, that should count for something right?" Tony says.

"It should, lets just hope it does." Pepper tells him before taking out her notebook, and looking over all the calls they have to make.
