Tony POV
I walk with pepper into the lab and see Kennedy sitting at her workbench messing around with the computer.
"Whatcha working on Firecracker?" I ask trying to sound lighthearted. She jumps at the sound of my voice and quickly closes whatever She was doing.
"What? Nothing! I wasn't working on anything." She spits out turning to face us. I raise an eyebrow at her.
"Kennedy." I say accusingly, "what are you working on?" Her shoulders drop in defeat.
"Okay fine, I was messing with F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s code."
"Why? Do you know how much damage you could do to her system?" I scold.
"I know, but I was just trying to hook up her program to a flash drive so she could be programmed into any computer she's inserted into." She explains, opening the tab back up again. I take a look at the screen reading over her code.
"I'd be mad if I wasn't so impressed, How were you gonna get the automatic software download to work." I comment, Kennedy smiles, Happy to show off her work, and would have answered me if Pepper hadn't cleared her throat, Reminding me of the task at hand. "Oh yeah, Um, we need to tell you something Firecracker." Her smile instantly disappeared, she knows that whatever is coming isn't good.
"You're mom was just here," Pepper starts, prompting a disgusted look from the girl, "She says she wants to regain custody of you." Kennedy's eyes widen in complete horror, and I can see glassy tears start to form.
"You're not gonna let her are you?" She asks in a shaky terrified voice.
"We'll tell her you don't want to go with her and hope she accepts that, but Kennedy, we haven't finished the adoption yet, she could take us to court to get you back." Pepper explains, a sense of fear in her voice as well.
"And what happens if she does?"
"We won't let her win." I assure her, trying my best to sound confident for them. Silence settles over the room, all of our thoughts filled with the same terrible thoughts of what if. What if she does go to court, what if we don't win, what if we lose each other, the thoughts of the unknown are terrifying.
Kennedy's POV
Two days go by with no word from my mother, we all begin to think that maybe, just maybe, she really is gone. But no one dares to start breathing again, no one dares let down their guard and hope that we are out of the woods. I spend most of my time in the lab, thinking mostly, but also working on little programing projects, learning more and more. Tony and Pepper are busy with work down on the stark industries floors a lot because there are apparently 'a lot of things going on with the company right now.' they also completed their adoption seminar, so all that's left to do is finish the paperwork. So i'm alone pretty much all day, sure I could go hang out with Natasha or Wanda or something, but I want to be in the lab, I want to be working on something to keep my mind busy, and not have to endure the awkward conversation and looks of sympathy. Peter is in and out because he's busy with school, but when he is around he's right by my side, letting me talk or not talk, and not pressuring me or treating me differently. I am currently in the lab, working once again on my quick install A.I. flash drive thingie, when Someone Silently puts their hands over my eyes from behind, startling me a little. Then I break into a huge grin.
"Peter?" I ask and swivel my chair around to see none other than my best friend, with backpack still slung over his shoulder, standing before me. "Peter! I thought you we're going on some kind of science field trip today."
"Nah, it got canceled, the lab we were visiting was closed because of some, particle something or other explosion, so they let us out early." He explains.
"Well you don't know how glad I am that you're here, I feel like I've been bored out of my brain with no one to talk to." I say leaning my head back and spinning around dramatically. He stops my chair from spinning and looks at me like i'm weird, which i am but that's not the point.
"Why didn't you just go hang out with one of the others, everyone is here today as far as I know."
"Because you're the only one, besides pepper and Tony, who doesn't seem like you're walking on eggshells the entire time i'm in the room." I whine.
"Okay well I'm here now, so no need to mope. Whatcha working on?" He leans over and stares at my screen.
"Meh, nothing," I tell him in a board tone, "Just a stupid Idea I was playing with." He starts to walk across to his work space as I talk. "What about you? Whats your latest project?"
"Just a chemistry experiment. " He's about to put on some safety goggles when a loud alert beeps from my holotable. I look up and see a holographic image of my mother walking into the building.
"Uh, what's that about?" Peter asks and pushes his chair from his desk to mine.
"Well... I may have accessed the security cameras and programed them to alert me if my mom shows up."
"Uh-huh, and how much permission did you have to do that?" He interrogates.
"Approximately 0%." I say shamefully.
"Well since you've already got it set up we might as well see what happens right?"
"We might as well, I mean it would be a waste of hard work if we didn't." we look slyly at each other than lean over the holotable to watch the live feed. As we watch she asks the receptionist for Pepper. I know for a fact that she and Tony are in a staff meeting right now, and so she is sent to wait in a room outside the meeting room. The camera follows her and we watch with boredom as she sits and waits, playing on her phone. Finally the meeting lets out after about 50 rounds of angry birds. Senior employees from all departments file out of the room past the camera. When they are all gone tony appears at the door to receive My mom, apparently someone told him she was waiting. We switch to the camera in the room, and lucky for us the security at the tower includes audio, so we hear Tony say,
"Mrs Grayson, please come in, we've been waiting to hear from you." I smile, i've heard that voice enough to know that that's his fake polite voice, reserved for people he really doesn't want to talk to.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Stark, I just came by to see if you got the custody papers ready, and if you've talked to my daughter about it." The two of them visibly cringe at her use of the words 'My daughter.' Then Pepper stands up beside Tony.
"Actually we did talk to Kennedy, and I'm sorry to tell you, she informed us that she really doesn't want to live with you." She informs in a voice that is clearly not sorry.
"Oh she's just shy because we don't know eachother that well, Trust me, she'll warm up once she's back home with me. Now can we please talk about the legal part, what do we need to do to transfer custody." My mother insists and I purse my lips in anger.
"We don't feel that we should go against Kennedy's wishes on this subject, but we would be happy to allow you to visit her whenever you like." Pepper tries to appease the woman.
"I have rights, I am her mother and I am not just going to let her be cared for by someone else." She says sternly.
"She didn't seem to bothered that I took care of myself for five years." I mumble under my breath before returning my attention to the screen.
"Mrs. Greyson," Tony says, stepping forward ready to put an end to the conversation, "As Kennedy's current legal guardians, we can't in good conscience just hand her over to you against her will. Weather you like it or not we are Her guardians, and we have the right to make that decision." My mother opens her mouth to speak then closes it indignantly.
"We'll see about that." She says defiantly and turns, stalking out of the room. I sit there for a moment not knowing what to say, he seems to have told her off, I look over at Peter, silently asking permission to ditch him. He waves a hand toward the door understandingly. I thank him and instantly rush out of the room, headed toward the meeting room where Pepper and Tony are. When I reach the door I knock then push the door open, the two of them look up at me from their seats as I enter.
"Perfect timing firecracker, I was just about to come find you."
"I know." I say a little embarrassed as I walk over and take a seat near them.
"How?" Tony asks suspiciously.
"It's, entirely possible that I hacked the security feed to tell me if my mom came into the tower." I confess, tracing circles on the table as I talk. Tony lets out I sigh and pinches the bridge of his nose, but I can tell he's hiding a smile, I know pepper can see it too because she gives us both a disapproving look.
"Haven't you learned your lesson about hacking yet?" Tony finally says after getting his smile under control. I just shrug and try to look innocent. "Nevermind, we'll talk about that later, but yes you're right, you're mom was here, and I assume you heard the whole conversation right?" I nod,
"What did she mean when she said 'we'll see about that'?"
"I'm afraid she might have meant that she is going to go to the court and try to get you taken from us by force. We can keep hoping that she'll just drop it, but in the mean time, I need to call our lawyer and see what we can do if she does go to court." Pepper informs me, causing my good mood to take a drastic dip.
"Do you think she'll win?" I ask in a tone of fear.
"I don't know, that's why we have to do our homework and know our rights, I mean you're 15, you have to have some sort of say in this, it's not like you're a 5 year old who doesn't really know what's best. That in itself is an advantage." She continues explaining, and reaches across the table to grasp my nervous fidgeting hand. "We're gonna do everything in our power to win this."
Kennedy's journal
Turns out my mom wasn't messing around yesterday. We got a letter this morning, it was from some lawyer, and basically said that they are taking Tony to court about my custody. I can't believe it, I really thought she would be gone. Pepper was right, she's taking them to court. But there's no way she could Win right? I mean, she abandoned me for 7 years, the court cannot possibly send me away with her, right? Tony and pepper have been on the phone all day with lawyers, trying to figure out what to do, and trying to get the case pushed back. apparently the court date is set for next week, I was supposed to be adopted by then, but apparently this case puts the adoption on hold. I don't understand everything that's happening, and i'm trying to stay out of the way as much as possible, so rather than asking questions, I look them up online. The internet does not help me feel better, according to google, biological parents usually win cases like this one. In summary, life sucks, plus it's not helping me deal with the anxiety thing.
