Kennedy's Journal

The last week has been. . . odd. On the up side, I'm still at Avengers Tower so I have that going for me. But I have been having attacks almost every night. Pepper thought it would be a good idea for me to sleep on their couch to be closer to them when I have attacks, and I think it helps, I mean, it tends to happen when I'm alone, so being near them calms me a bit. The attacks suck, but during the day I'm usually fine, Peter and I hang out, and everyone treats me normal for the most part, aside from Thor, who keeps calling me a 'delicate flower that must be protected.' and urging Tony to find a 'cure' I think it's sweet. This morning a social worker came to the tower to do a home study for the adoption, I think it went went well, but it's hard to tell with those kinds of people. Pepper says that next week they have to go to a seminar about child care and adoption and stuff, and after that the adoption will almost be final. Honestly I don't know it was possible for life to be so good and yet so terrible at the same time, but I guess I'll just be happy that there is some good stuff going on. #optimist. Wow, did I just write a hashtag in my journal? I'm such a dork.

Kennedy's POV

I look up from my page, laughing at myself, and look absently around my room. Peter lays on the floor, face buried in my plush rug, with papers, books, and binders, spread out around him.

"Jfhjrfnhkc jhveh eshkbfsyugrwe." he grumbles into the rug.

"What was that? I couldn't hear you."

"I said, whoever it was who decided we need to study History should be fired." He repeats, lifting his head up slightly

"I don't know what you're talking about, I've never had any trouble while studying History." He glares at me accusingly and I laugh at him. He places his face back on the carpet despairingly, I slide off my bed and sit down beside him, "What are you working on now?"

"Studying for my history test next week, but after that I have to start my book report or I won't turn it in on time." He explains, rolling over on his side.

"If it's next week then why do you have to finish today?"

"Because tomorrow is thanksgiving and school doesn't start again till monday and I want to have a peaceful four day weekend."

"Alright, so I'll help you study, we'll knock it out quickly, and then you can start on your book report." Peter shuts his eyes, making a disgusted face. "Oh come on, it's not that bad/" I grab his hand, pulling him into a sitting position.

"You know, one day Pepper's gonna send you to school, and then you'll see how bad it is."

"Oh," My shoulders drop, "Come on did you have to say that? I was in such a good mood today."

"Sorry, just a reality check. Shall we?" He gestures to his books, and this time we both look on in disgust. And so we study, and study some more, and it's three in the afternoon before Peter feels ready for his test. Having fulfilled my best friend duties, I leave Peter to his report and head up to the training room, where I expect to find Steve, just like every day. I'm not wrong, as soon as the elevator opens I hear the sound of a punching bag being beat up. When I reach the punching bags Steve greets me with a smile while stopping the bag from swinging.

"I was starting to think you weren't gonna show up." He says, tossing me the boxing gloves that Natasha had given me.

"Of course I showed up, I wouldn't miss a lesson with my favorite superhero!" I start to warm up a bit by stretching my arms and punching the air.

"What held you up?" He asks, getting ready to stabilize the bag against my blows. "Right for forward, bend your knees."

"I was helping Peter with homework," I correct my stance and start throwing punches at the bag.

"You we're helping Peter? Hasn't it been like five years since you've been to school? Keep your fists up."

"Yeah, but I was mostly just reading stuff out of his textbook so he could memorize for a test." I bring my fists closer to my chin before punching the bag again then quickly recoiling in pain.

"Are you okay?" Steve asks in alarm.

"Yeah, I think I pulled something, ow." I stretch my arm out, moving it around to see where the pain is.

"I'll get you an ice pack." I sit down on a bench near the wall, while Steve goes into the first aid room to retrieve an ice pack. He returns within seconds and hands me the ice, which I promptly place on my shoulder to ease the pain. Steve sits down beside me, watching with care and concern. So different from the first day I met him, he wanted nothing to do with me that day, and even for weeks after he hardly talked to me, and would avoid me as much as possible. It wasn't till after I remembered Coulson's advice and started asking him questions about the old days that he really opened up to me. I let out a sigh in the midst of my thoughts.

"What are you thinking about." Comes Steve's curious voice, I look up, a little startled as I had forgotten he was there.

"Just all of this," I announce, vaguely gesturing around the room, "It all seems so unreal, I'm just some orphan kid, I'm nothing special. But look at me, Captain America just helped me get an ice pack, any other girl in this city would die for this interaction." I remove the pack from my skin, shifting to get a better grip.

"I'm not so special." Steve starts modestly, but I cut him off.

"No but you are, you're an Avenger! You're Captain America! I've fangirled over you since I was like six, and now I live in the same building as you, I live in Avengers Tower, Tony and Pepper Stark are adopting me!" I stop to run a hand through my hair, "I keep thinking I'm gonna wake up and it's all been just a dream, it has to be, it can't be real." I laugh a little. There is silence for a moment, and I think that maybe Steve just won't say anything.

"It's not a dream." He says, looking at me sincerely . "It's real, and you deserve all of this. You've been through enough in your life to have the privilege of people who care about you, we all care about you Kennedy. Tony and Pepper, they love you, don't think for a second that they don't, you should have seen them when you were away. Neither of them could concentrate on their work, Stark industries was a mess, they didn't know what they were doing that we're so preoccupied with thinking about you. So yeah, you're just some orphan kid, but so are most of us here, and it definitely doesn't mean you're not special, because I've never seen tony care about anyone the way he cares about you." I listen to his whole speech in silence, smiling more genuinely at every word.

"Thanks Steve, you sure can come up with a good speech on the spot."

"Anytime, Now, I assume you don't want to pick back up right now?" He asks, gesturing toward my injured shoulder.

"Nah, I think I'll go down to the common room and chill." I stand up and hand the pack back to him.

"You might wanna have F.R.I.D.A.Y. take a look at that shoulder, just to make sure everythings fine."

"I will." I assure him before heading on my way and leaving Steve to finish his workout.

A minute later I walk into the common room, and what I find is Pepper, Nat, and Tony, watching some show about fixing up houses. When I get closer I notice that Tony, rather than watching the show, is tinkering with his holo-phone. I plop down next to him and lean over his shoulder, watching him work. He glances at me before continuing with his tiny tool, which seems to be something like a soldering iron.

"Shouldn't you guys be working?" I ask Tony, while intently watching him tweek.

"Slow day, everyone else can handle it, I told them to call if there's anything big that needs handling." Tony replies nonchalantly without stopping his hands.

"Besides, he has a surprise for you, and he wanted to be here when it arrives." Pepper explains further, smiling. My curiosity is piqued at the word 'surprise'.

"Ooo, a surprise! Where is it?" I ask excitedly, bouncing a little on the couch.

"It's not here yet." Tony says, obviously trying not to be excited by my excitement.

"Well what is it, can't you just tell me?" I beg.

"Well then it wouldn't be a surprise." He laughs. I pout and look over at Pepper, she puts her hands up and says.

"I'm not gonna spoil the surprise." Next I look at Natasha, hopefully.

"Hey, don't look at me, I don't even know what it is." Just as I'm about to plead to tony once more, F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s voice cuts in saying,

"Mr. Stark, your visitor has arrived."

"Thanks F.R.I.D.A.Y., send em up." Ah so my surprise is a person, but who could it be? My first thought is Peter, but then I remember that he's already here. My next thought is Coulson, but though I like talking to him, his arrival is hardly surprise worthy. Maybe Victoria, that makes a little more sense, but still, why the fuss? Tony smiles mischievously as he watches me try to figure it out. He stands up, ready to meet the person at the elevator, and I follow him, watching with anticipation as the elevator moves toward us, and finally the door opens. My jaw drops in shock as soon as I see their face. This can't be possible, I really am dreaming.
