Chapter 16: what's wrong with me

Kennedy's POV

"Ken!" Peter shouts as soon as I step out of the elevator. He jumps up off the hall floor and runs to greet me. "What took you so long? Is everything okay? What did the doctor say?"

"Calm down, I'm fine, sort of. I'll tell you everything that happened but can we go sit down first?"

"Oh, yeah, of course." We walk together into Peter's room and sit down on his couch.

"Okay, first things first things first, we took so long because we stopped to see my friend Victoria. And as far as the doctor visit goes, Tony was right, I had an anxiety attack."

"Anxiety attack? So is it dangerous? Are you gonna be okay?" His face is full of concern.

"Um, apparently it's not dangerous, but it sure didn't feel that way last night. It was the worst experience i've ever had, I'm terrified that it's gonna happen again."

"Well, I'm here to help, so if you ever do have another one, what should I do?"

"Um, mostly you can just stay near me, try not to hug me or anything, it didn't turn out well when Pepper tried that." I tell him, happy that he wants to help.

"Got it, now lets hope I never have to put those things to use. But if you ever need anything, even just someone to talk to, you know where to find me. And if I'm not here don't be afraid to call okay?" I nod and meet his gaze,

"Okay, thanks Peter." I watch his sympathetic eyes, which show me just how sincere he's being. He smiles at me, and after a moment he breaks eye contact, looking away and clearing his throat. I look down at my hands, biting my lip as an awkward silence settles between us. I finally break it by saying,

"Um, I. . . I'd better go, I want to talk to Tony before dinner." I stand up and start to leave the room.

"Um, okay, see ya." I hear Peter say as I walk away.

"F.R.I.D.A.Y. where's Tony? I ask when I step in the elevator.

"Mr, Stark is currently in the training room." Comes the reply, I thank F.R.I.D.A.Y. and press the button for floor 90. When I reach the floor I step out and immediately see Tony, as well as Natasha, Steve, Bucky, Wanda, and Vision, paired up and sparring on mats. I stand to the side and watch for a few minutes until Tony notices me, resulting in Wands landing a blow to his gut. Tony clutches his stomach from surprise and pain. He raises a hand in the air.

"Uncle, you win." He straightens and steps off his mat, leaving Wanda with a satisfied smirk on her face. "Is everything okay Firecracker?" He asks, walking toward me.

"Yeah, I'm fine, I was just looking for you." I explain.

"Well as you can see, I was busy getting myself beat up." He says, making me laugh.

"What are you guys doing anyway?" I ask, watching the pairs of sparring people.

"Training, hand to hand combat."

"But you have the iron man suit, don't you just, you know, fly around blasting people?"

"Well yeah, when I know I'm going into battle, but what happens when I get caught off guard without my suit? Plus, punching your friends in the face as an outstanding stress reliever." I laugh at that last comment, " I'm serious, you wanna try?" I look up at him in surprise.

"Me? But I don't know how." I protest, but Tony tosses me a pair of gloves off a shelf.

"Oh come on, theres a first time for everything." By this time the other fights have finished and everyone was pairing themselves up for another round. "Hey Capsicle, wanna fight the Firecracker?" Tony shouts across the room.

"Sure, come over Kennedy." I nervously comply and walk over to Steve's mat.

"Uh, just go easy on me okay?"

"Of course, just remember the punches I showed you on the punching bag, it's basicly the same except a punching bag doesn't fight back." Everyone else pairs up and we start, the round is over quickly, I don't land a single blow, and it ends with me hitting the ground. Steve helps me up and the sparring lasts a few more rounds, I get paired with Wanda, and then with Tony, and each round I end up on the ground. It gets frustrating, but Nat tells me I should get used to being knocked down while I'm learning. Soon F.R.I.D.A.Y. announces that dinner is ready, and we all start to clean up and head down. In the common room Bruce has prepared soft tacos for everyone. The tacos are gladly received and eaten, and after dinner everyone decides to hang out in the common room. Conversations are had and a movie is watched, and as it gets late I sit silently in the corner of the couch, hoping that Pepper and Tony won't notice that I'm still up. Soon Peter heads to bed, as well as Bruce and Bucky, and unfortunately my tactic to delay going to bed doesn't work.

"Kennedy, isn't it about time you we're in bed? It's been a long day, you must be tired." Pepper says during a lull in the conversation.

"I'm not really that tired." I lie.

"Well either way, it's getting late, you should probably turn in." She insists.

"Uuu. . . " I try to think of another excuse to stay up, but not having found any, my only choice is to comply, "Uuu, okay." I slowly get up from the couch and say goodnight to everyone. My feet feel like they are made of bricks as I walk toward the elevator.

"Oh, hold on a second." Tony says. I turn around as he walks toward me, "I have the medicine from the doctor, he said one pill every night before you go to bed." I nod and take the bottle of pills from him. "Hey, you're gonna be fine, just try to stay relaxed." He says, patting me on the shoulder. I try to smile before turning back to the elevator. My hands are trembling by the time I reach my floor. I go into my room, put on my pajamas, and brush my teeth after taking a pill. My hands don't stop shaking the entire time I'm getting ready for bed, I can't stop thinking about what the attack felt like. I stand by the light switch taking deep breaths, trying to calm myself, not wanting to turn off the lights, as if the darkness might trigger another attack. I finally switch off the light and slowly climb into my bed. What happens if I have another attack? I'm all alone, there's no one here to help me, I'll be panicking with no one to help me stop. And what if the doctor was wrong, what if they are dangerous? What if I really do have a heart attack, or I really can't breathe, and no one will know because I'm alone in here? All these thoughts start to cloud my head, making it hard to think logically about the situation. My skin starts to tingle like I'm laying on a bed of pins. My heart speeds up, pounding harder and harder. I realize that I actually am starting to panic, and that just makes me even more panicked. I jump out of bed, shaky on my feet, and rush to turn on the light, thinking that might stop it. But all that happens is my throat getting dry and making it hard to breathe. I'm gonna die alone in this room, I'm having a heart attack. My legs nearly give out under me as I grope for the wall, I have to go, I have to get out of here before I die. I reach for the doorknob and stumble into the dark hallway.

Peter's POV

I lay wrapped in my blankets, just in that place between asleep and awake, I hear soft sounds in my room and begin to dream, drifting over the edge into sleep.

"Peter!" Someone yells. I scream and sit bolt upright in my bed.

"Who's there?" I ask, hopping out of bed and taking a fighting stance.

"Peter?" I let out a sigh of relief when I recognize the voice as Kennedy's. I quickly turn the lights on and see her standing by my couch and gripping onto it for dear life with tears streaming down her face.

"Ken, Ken, I'm right here. Are you alright?" She doesn't respond but just continues gripping the couch. I notice her breathing is really intense. "Are you having an anxiety attack?" I ask, my own heart rate starting to raise. She nods and turns toward me, shaking.

"Peter," She pleads, "What's wrong with me?" I can hear the fear in her voice.

"There's nothing wrong with you, nothing at all, you've just been through a lot lately." I try to comfort her. She rubs her hands together nervously and starts to walk away. I watch as she walks shakily around my room, and I desperately try to think of what to do. After a minute she stops.

"Peter are you here?" She asks looking around franticly, I run over to her.

"Yeah, yeah I'm right here, don't worry. What can I do, what do you need?"

"P-pepper. . . and Tony." She says between shallow breaths.

"Of course," I do a facepalm, "Why didn't I call them in the first place? F.R.I.D.A.Y. wake up Tony and Pepper, tell them Kennedy is having an anxiety attack."

"Of course Mr. Parker." She responds, now I just have to keep Kennedy calm till they get here.

"Kennedy, Tony and Pepper are on their way, what else do you need?"

"I- I don't know. . . I can't breathe."

"Yes you can, come on, take a deep breath with me." I breathe in and she takes a shaky breath with me, I breathe out, and she follows.

"It's not working." She starts to breathe even faster.

"It's okay Ken, you can do this, take a deep breathe." I take a breathe again and urge her to follow, we repeat this over and over again, taking deep slow breaths until I hear pepper call,

"Kennedy, where are you?" I assume she's across the hall in Kennedy's room.

"She's in here!" I call, Kennedy covers her ears, "Sorry." The two of them come in.

"Kennedy are you okay?" Tony asks, standing next to me, Kennedy keeps her ears covered and shakes her head.

"I think loud noises are bothering her. But I got her to take a few deep breaths and she seems a little calmer now." I explain.

"Thanks Peter." Pepper says.

"Kennedy? What can we do?" Tony asks in a significantly quieter voice. Kennedy takes her hands off her ears but continues shaking her head.

"I'm scared."

"We know you're scared, but you'll be okay," Pepper comforts, "We're all still here, you're not alone." This seems to have some effect because Kennedy stops shaking so much. We help her take some more deep breaths and soon her breathing is back to a normal pace. She uses the back of her hand to wipe her eyes.

"I think I'm okay now." She says, sounding relieved, the rest of us are just as relieved to hear her say that. She hugs Pepper tightly.

"Are you sure you're okay? Is there anything you need?" Kennedy lets go of Pepper and nods.

"Yeah, it's over, I'm just tired now," She turns my way and hugs me as well, "Sorry Peter, and thanks." My cheeks heat up slightly and I clear my throat.

"Uu, no problem, told you I'm here to help."
