Chapter Six
The Hermes cabin- about twenty people- filed in seniority. So, of course, Crystal was last. The sun was starting to set as they all made their way to the dining pavilion. They all sat down on a bench which was way too small to fit everyone. Crystal nearly fell off when she sat down.
-----
Chiron (who had turned into a centaur, much to Crystal's surprise) pounded his hoof on the floor. Everyone fell silent.
He raised a glass. "To the gods!"
Everyone copied him. Nymphs came forward with platters of food: grapes, apples, strawberries, cheese, fresh bread, and barbecue.
Crystal looked into her glass. Empty. Luke saw Crystal and smiled. "Speak to it. Whatever you want- non alcoholic, of course."
Crystal said, "Um... Water?"
The glass filled with the clear liquid. She took a sip. Sweet.
Crystal was handed a plate full of strawberries. She filled her plate with fruit and cheese, since she wasn't very hungry. Before she took a bite, she noticed campers getting up with their plates.
"Come on," Luke nodded his head towards them.
They both got up. "You throw in an offering to the gods. They love the smell." Luke explained.
He threw in a cluster of fat red grapes and said, "Hermes."
It was Crystal's turn. She had no idea which god to say. So, she just made a silent plea. Please tell me if you're my mother. She threw in the freshest chunk of cheese and largest strawberry. Just before she sat back down, she saw Percy sitting alone at a table. She hesitated a moment, and headed towards him. She felt a lot of eyes looking at her, but she ignored them.
"Hey," She said and sat down.
Percy looked up in surprise. "Crystal? You're not allowed to sit here!"
"Why?"
"This is where children of Poseidon are supposed to sit!"
"Well, we can't have you sitting alone now, Mr. I Saved The World?" She smirked.
He rolled his eyes. The whole while, they chatted and laughed.
After everyone finished eating, Chiron pounded his hoof again.
Mr. D got up with a loud sigh. "The next capture the flag is Friday. Cabin five currently holds the laurels."
A loud cheer came from the Ares cabin.
"I literally could care less. Also, we have a new camper today. Cassie Waterfall." Chiron whispered something into Mr. D's ear.
"I mean, Crystal Clearwater," He corrected. "Now go on to your stupid campfire."
Everyone cheered and headed down toward the amphitheater where the Apollo cabin led a sing-along. Crystal, not really liking to sing, sat next to Luke quietly. Soon, it was lights out and everyone headed back to their own cabins. Crystal saw there was a sleeping bag by her backpack. Luckily, her bag hadn't been touched. Luke winked at her, silently telling her he had gotten it for her. She smiled and unrolled the bag. Crystal laid down and pulled out the picture of her and her aunt. She looked at it for a while, before closing her eyes and slipping into a deep sleep.
