Chapter Five
"We have to go. I have to show Crissie her cabin." Hannah put her hand on Crystal's shoulder.
Crystal immediately glared and pushed the hand off her shoulder and hissed lowly, "Never call me Crissie."
Hannah backed off. "I'm sorry. Um... maybe we should go..."
Crystal nodded and smiled. "Yeah. I want to know where I'm staying!"
-----
There were 12 cabins in the woods by the lake. It was shaped as a U, two as the base and five in a row on each side. Each cabin was completely different except they each had a large brass number above the door. Number nine looked like a tiny factory, four had tomato vines on the walls and a roof made of actual grass, and seven seemed to be made from solid gold and sparkled so much in the sunlight it was nearly impossible to look at. They all faced a common area about the size of a soccer field, with Greek statues, fountains, flower beds, a couple basketball courts scattered around.
In the center of it all was a huge stone-lined firepit. Hannah said it was always lit. A small girl- no more than nine- was tending to the flames.
The two base cabins were numbers one and two. Cabin one was the biggest and bulkiest of the twelve. It had polished bronze doors that shimmered like a hologram so that from different angles, it looked like lightning bolts streaked across them. Cabin two seemed more calm and graceful with slim white columns decorated with pomegranates and flowers. The walls had been carved with images of peacocks.
Cabin three was long, low and solid. The outer walls were made of rough gray stone and were studded with pieces of shell and coral. Crystal caught a whiff of a salty scent as her and Hannah walked past it.
"That's where Percy stays?" She asked Hannah.
Hannah looked to where she was pointing. "Yep. He's the only one there."
Crystal wanted to question it, but decided to drop it.
Most other cabins were crowed with campers. Number five was bright red that seemed to be painted with fists. The roof was lined with barbed wire. A stuffed boar head hung above the door and had eyes that seemed to follow Crystal.
They had stopped in front of cabin eleven. It looked like a regular summer camp cabin but really old. The brown paint was peeling. Above the door was caduceus. It was packed with people. There were more kids than bunk beds. Sleeping bags were spread out all over the floor.
"That's where you're staying. I hope you don't have anything valuable, Hermes kids are known to steal." Hannah said. "Luke! C'mere!"
A nineteen-year-old boy came to the door. He was tall and muscular, with short-cropped sandy hair and a friendly smile. He wore an orange tank top, cutoffs, sandals, and a necklace with five different colored clay beads. He also had a thick white scar that went from beneath his right eye to his jaw.
"Hey!" He said.
"Luke, this is Crystal. She's new and undetermined." The campers behind Luke groaned.
"Hush guys. Well, Crystal, welcome to the Hermes cabin. You can have that space right there." Luke pointed to a small empty space in the corner.
Crystal set her bag in the corner, along with Aunt Marie's spear that was still strapped to her back. Almost immediately as she let go of the bag, someone snatched it up.
"Take anything from me, and there will be one less person in this cabin!" She hissed to the camper, a fire in her eyes.
He gulped and put the bag back down.
Luke laughed. "You certainly are a tough cookie."
"Thanks." Crystal smiled.
Suddenly, a horn blew. A conch shell.
"Cabin eleven, line up!" Luke yelled.
"Gotta go! Good luck, Crystal!" Hannah hugged her friend before running to cabin six.
The Hermes cabin- about twenty people- filed in seniority. So, of course, Crystal was last. The sun was starting to set as they all made their way to the dining pavilion. They all sat down on a bench which was way too small fit everyone. Crystal nearly fell off when she sat down.
