The War God

Mars had known for many years now he needed to choose a Titan. A loyal follower who would be his champion of war and conquest. However, he was left with the problem of finding someone who was worthy of that title. His wife Venus, the goddess of love, had strongly let him know her opinion on the matter. She was determined for Mars to choose one or both of their twin sons, Romulus and Remus.

He had too many reservations for his sons to be his titan. As the gods of fear and terror, they were powerful. He did want his champion to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies but his champion had to be more. They would also need to be virtuous and wise, traits his son's did not possess. No, his sons could not be his champion. They bend to the will of their mother. Completely faithful to her and would do anything she asks.

"I have a message for you, it's from Queen Juno." Unannounced Mercury, the message god flew in through Mars's window. He handed Mars an ornate scroll with the Queen's seal on it. He looked to Mercury for an explanation but he was gone again before he could even get a word out.

He started at the scroll. 'This is quite the novelty' he thought. He rarely received messages from his mother and quickly pried the seal loose with his thumb. The golden parchment came loose and unrolled in his hand.

Mars,

Comes find me on the battlefield of Magnesia.

I'll be waiting for you,

Queen Juno

Mars knew better than to keep his mother waiting, she tended to lose her patients quickly. In a flash of light, he instantly appeared on the battlefield. He looked across the vast mass off decaying bodies until his eyes landed on her golden cloak, billowing in the gentle breeze. He stepped over several human bodies as he made his way over to her. Her attention was fixed downward. He couldn't make out what she was looking at until he was standing beside her.

Amongst the dead soldiers laid a woman. It was odd enough that a woman was on a battlefield but what was even more unusual was the sleeping baby in her arms. Mars coldly stared at the pair. Void of all emotion, he felt nothing towards the mortals who lay at his feet. The Queen turned to face her son, pain etched her gentle features.

"Why have you summoned me, Mother?" He got right to the point. He had been irritated about the summons but now he was a little intrigued.

"The mother prayed to me. She asked me to save her child but when I arrived to retrieve the newborn, I found the baby to have been born here on this battlefield." his mother explained the situation to him.

"I fail to see what this has to do with me?" Mars told her flatly.

"I summoned you because this child was born in your domain. I am unable to help this child because it already belongs to you. You are the God of War and the one who reigns over this realm. My hands are tied in this situation, only you can fulfill this mother's dying prayer." She explained.

He looked over the vast landscape, as far as he could see the land was littered with corpses. His eyes made their way back to the dead mother. The child slept peacefully in her arms, as if it were at home on the battlefield. He was impressed by this.

"What am I supposed to do with an infant? I am the God of War?" He asked, turning to look at her.

"You will not deny me this request Mars, you will raise this child as if it were your own. You are the God of this realm, it is your responsibility."

Time seemed to slow as she spoke. He felt his mother's pull on him and his eyes narrowed on hers. They shone vibrant orange, indicating her rage. The wind changed direction and shifted her hair off her shoulder, it whipped in the air violently as power radiated off her. His mother terrified him but the war god refused to adjust his posture and show any weakness.

"Make no mistake it is an honor to do your mother a favor, Mars."

After a moment's hesitation, he finally yielded to her request. "I will do you this favor. Perhaps you would do me one in return?"

His mother's aura became agitated. She did not like it when he tested her patience but before she could speak he continued.

"I need you to command the council of twelve to bestow a gift to the baby, each giving the newborn a way to make him a better warrior." He told her his request.

"I suppose I cannot deny the great war god a christening of it's new child. I will send invitations with Mercury, immediately." He watched as a knife appeared in her hand, she then bent over and cut the umbilical cord. She touched the mother's forehead."You did well my child." She took the infant from her arms.

He watched as she then pulled the child close, hugged her lovingly and the sissed her forehead. She pulled away and looked at the baby for a moment. His mother smiled.

"I grant you the gift of perfect bueaty," she touched the infant's forehead with her pinky finger.

She held the child out to him and he awkwardly took the infant from her. She smiled at them one last time before disapparated. He looked at the baby.

'I'm not sure how that's supposed to make him a better warrior but I guess it couldn't hurt to be good looking.' He tried to make sense of his mother's gift. His eyes settled back on the infant and for the first time, one thing was immediately clear to him. This child was not a male.

"Curse you, Mother."
