Chapter 72 - A stick and a line... or two
Though it had been hard not to give in to their urges again, Dean and Allegra agreed merely to sleep with each other in the non-biblical sense for at least a week. They had a brief lapse after getting a message from Turiel that Sam had been dealt with, but halted before getting to third base, albeit with great difficulty. The pause in their otherwise passionate activities gave them both some time to think things through. Especially Allegra.
Her love and lust for Dean had moved her to bring some of her walls down. She used to hate it when people displayed affection for each other so openly, but now understood why they did it. Without realizing it, she had become one of those people, holding hands and kissing Dean in public when they were out on a date without caring what other people might think. She loved him, and he her, and anyone who had a problem with that could stick it where the sun didn't shine. And though Allegra was still self-conscious about the scars on her back and refused to wear anything that showed too much of them when they went out, she allowed Dean to see them in private. He had made her lie face-down one evening so he could massage her mangled skin and kiss each scar with his soft lips. It was such bliss to have someone accept every part of her just as she was.
But being so besotted with her boyfriend had made her careless as well. Not using protection during sex was starting to feel more and more like a bad move. Not because she was afraid of some STD; their relationship was strong enough to trust each other with that. But it could have other repercussions. And the more Allegra thought about that possibility, the more she dreaded it.
I could just take the pill, she pondered while doing the groceries in the local Target-store. I can easily get a prescription from the doctor or online. Dean wouldn't even have to know that I'm taking it. I can keep it in my purse, and... God, what am I thinking? Of course I have to tell him! We're in this together. I jump, he jumps. I'll talk to him about it tonight over dinner. Yeah, that's what I'll...
Allegra's train of thought stopped when she noticed the aisle she was standing in. Dozens of packs of sanitary pads and tampons were staring her right in the face. She cocked her head, brows furrowed in concentration as she did the math. Her eyes widened.
Oh, God... Oh crap!
It couldn't be. Not yet. But as she counted again from the last time she had her period, she realized with a shock that she was already four days late. Her grip on the grocery basket tightened, making it shake beside her.
Okay, don't freak out yet. It's not the first time you're a few days off. It is the first time after sex, though. But honestly, what are the chances that I'm... that I'm already... Oh, son of a bitch!
"Allegra, that you, honey?"
Her head snapped up to see Lorelai coming straight toward her from the other side of the aisle. The skip in her step made her black curls bounce around her head.
"Fancy meeting you here," said her friend.
"Hi, Lor." Allegra offered her a weak smile, unable to say or do much else.
"I'm doing trivia again tonight. You and your hubby coming? I'll save you your usual table."
"No, I don't think so. I'm sorry, Lor, I have to go. I'll see you around."
Allegra tried to walk past her, but the other woman halted her by gripping her wrist.
"Hey, wait a minute, are you okay?" she asked, concerned. "You look very pale. Something happen? You and Dean doing good?"
"Yeah, we're good," answered Allegra. "It's nothing with him. Or maybe it is, I... I don't know."
Lorelai narrowed her sable eyes at her for a moment before looking at the products in the aisle. Allegra held her breath. Nothing went past her friend. She would figure out what was going on in a heartbeat. And by the understanding expression she suddenly held, it looked like she already had.
"I see," she said. "How long?"
"A few days." Allegra pressed her lips together to keep down a sob. "It's probably nothing, but..."
"No, no, don't dismiss it," interrupted Lorelai. "I've had a few scares as well before I got my tubes tied, so I know what you're feeling right now. Come on, we'll get what you need and go to the bar right now. Better not delay this."
"Okay. Thank you."
"Sure, honey. Let's go."

When the Wonderland Bar wasn't bustling with people, laughter and music, it was downright scary. The colorful scenes on the walls held a certain ominous vibe. The lights over the bar were the only ones that Lorelai put on, and the shadows that were cast around them made Allegra shiver. She felt like she wound up in a horror movie, on the run from an invisible predator who tried to drag her into the mysterious netherworld where the Wonderland characters were just waiting to devour her. Considering why they came to the bar, she would've rather preferred that scenario over the one she was currently facing.
"Okidoki, here we go." Lorelai placed a shot glass with a clear liquid in front of Allegra. "This is low-alcohol. Only giving you the one until the timer on my phone dings so you can calm your nerves. I'll give you the powerful stuff if both tests are negative."
She downed the shot in one go. Even though there was barely any alcohol in the drink, it still burned her throat, making her cough. As she put the glass back down, she glanced at the pregnancy tests.
"I take it wasn't exactly planned, huh?"
"Not really, no." Allegra met Lorelai's sympathetic smile with a sigh.
"Faulty protection?"
"Actually... no protection."
"What?! Oh, come on, girl."
"I know, I know. It just... happened."
Her friend tsk-ed in a chiding manner. Allegra bit her lip and leaned forward, putting her elbow on the bar and keeping her head up with one hand to her temple. She didn't need Lorelai to tell her it had been a terrible move to just go at it and hope for the best. With her luck, of course she would get pregnant on the first time.
"Allegra." Lorelai grabbed her arm. "Please don't take this the wrong way, but Dean didn't force you into any of this, did he?"
"No!" Allegra exclaimed, jolting up at the question. "No, no, it's not like that at all, I swear. He... I... We..."
She struggled to find the right words to explain what had led to this. Everything sounded so stupid in her head. And Lorelai's stern gaze wasn't making it any easier, either. In the end, Allegra gave up and decided to come clean about everything.
"You remember I told you that Dean and I got together about two years ago, but that we broke up for a bit too, right?"
"Yeah." Lorelai nodded. "You said you hit a rough patch because of stuff going on with his family and work, but that you kept in touch and it was clear you still had feelings for each other before he left on his assignment with the Bureau."
"Right. So, when he returned, we gave it another try, taking things slow to get back into it." Allegra paused a moment. "One of the reasons I was hesitant to try again was because I... We hadn't been... intimate yet."
Lorelai stared at her for a minute. Then her jaw clenched. Her eyes lit in a furious blaze as she seemed to grasp the meaning behind Allegra's words. She pinched her lips, clearly containing her anger.
"Allegra, did your 'rough patch' include him cheating on you because you weren't having sex?"
"Partly." Allegra saw no point in denying it. "We were already in a bad place, though. That was just the last straw to really end things between us."
"That lousy son of a bitch!" yelled Lorelai, pushing herself away from the bar. "Where is he?! I'm gonna tear him a new one, I swear!"
"Lor, calm down, please. Like I said, that was just the last straw, but it's in the past. Things are different now. Dean changed a lot since then. We talked things through when he came back from his assignment, and I've never been more assured that he's the right guy for me. He never pushes me into doing anything I don't want to do, and he finally tells me he loves me, which he never did before."
"Allegra..."
"No, wait, let me finish. When we went to Manhattan for Valentine's, I made it clear that I was ready to take the next step, but when we got to it... I shut down because I was nervous. Afraid, really. But Dean still found a way for us to be intimate without actually having sex. We tried again several times after that, but I kept freezing. He never once called me out on it and was real understanding and supportive. He gave me time to adjust to every new thing we tried. I couldn't have asked for a better person to... have my first time with."
Lorelai's eyes widened at the confession. She clicked her tongue with a huff, shook her head, and leaned back against the cash register.
"Fine, I'll only smack Dean next time I see him," she said. "Go on."
"A little over a week ago, we got a bit intoxicated, and we had this... really wild night. We realized in the morning that we forgot to use a condom. Dean assured me he would make sure to always wear one, for as long as I wanted him to, but... I stopped him from putting one on every time after that."
"Ending up where we currently are," concluded Lorelai.
"Yeah..."
"Okay, so... if you stopped him from using protection, does that mean you want to have a baby with him?"
"I... I'm not sure. But I guess I do... eventually."
"What about Dean? He went along with it, so I gather he wants a family, doesn't he?"
Allegra thought back to the conversation they had the morning after their first time. Dean had assured her he was all in with her. He even told her he would be happy if she turned out to be pregnant. But what if just said that to put her mind at ease? If both tests were positive, and they were expecting... Would he freak out at learning he would be a dad in nine months?
God, how do even you tell somebody they're going to be a father?
Suddenly, Lorelai's phone vibrated and chimed with a fairy-like bell. Both women stared at the pregnancy tests next to the device.
"Moment of truth," said Lorelai. "Do you wanna do the honors?"
Allegra gulped. She reached for the first test with a trembling hand. Every fiber in her being prayed for just one thing.
Please... Not yet.

Dean hummed Zeppelin's Black Dog as he closed the hood of Mrs. Robinson's car. Since the old bitty had been gracious enough to lend them her husband's car, the least he could do was make sure it was well-maintained. It was nice to work on a car again. He always had a knack for mechanics. Maybe that's what he would've done had he not been forced into a Hunter's life.
Satisfied with the work he did on the blue Chevy, Dean nodded approvingly and picked up his tools. He patted the side of his leg. Trixie, who had been lying peacefully next to the toolbox, jumped up to her feet and trudged along to the house with him. Never in a million years had Dean thought he would grow this accustomed to having a dog close to him, but the Australian shepherd was practically part of the family. He couldn't imagine her not being around.
"Let's see if Alley's back already, huh, girl?"
Trixie barked excitedly and sprinted up the porch. She pushed her paw impatiently against the front door and looked back to see what was taking Dean so long.
"I'm coming. Hold your horses." He smiled. "There you go."
The dog dashed inside the moment he opened the door. She went straight toward the kitchen. Dean put the toolbox in the coat closet and followed the door. His smile widened when he saw Allegra seated at the kitchen counter with her back to him.
"Hey, you." He greeted and walked past Allegra to get some coffee before facing her. "You got everything you needed from the store? Anything interesting happening around town? I was thinking we could go out tonight and..."
Dean stopped talking when he noticed her red eyes. She was staring at her Minnie Mouse tea mug as if something dreadful had happened to it.
"Alley?" He edged closer to her. "You okay?"
She didn't reply, but looked up at him. The agony in her expression alarmed Dean instantly.
"What happened?" he asked more urgently. "Something going on in town? Demons? Angels? Other monsters?"
"S-Sit down for a sec," she said with a brittle voice. "We have to talk."
Dean did as he was told, sitting across from her. He reached for her hand, but she pulled away when their fingers touched. Her reaction made him break out in a sweat. What the hell happened that she wouldn't let him touch her?
"Alley, what's going on?"
She took a deep breath.
"I was... at the store," she began. "In the aisle with the... feminine products. And I realized that... I'm late."
He tilted his head in confusion. Late, what was she...? But then it hit him.
"You're... Y-You're..." he stammered, eyes wide with shock.
"Lorelai saw me standing there and figured out what was going on," continued Allegra. "We bought a couple of pregnancy tests and went to the bar."
"And?" Dean's throat went dry. "What did the tests say?"
"Positive..."
His heart lurched.
"... and negative."
Time stopped completely.
"Wh-What?" Dean frowned, trying to make sense of what Allegra just said. "You got two different results? How is that possible?"
"I don't know." Allegra's lower lip trembled. "One of them is a false result, but I don't know which one. I... Dean, I'm..."
A strangled sob escaped her. Dean jumped off his stool and hurried around the counter to take her shaking body into an embrace.
"Hey, hey, calm down," he said as Allegra buried her face against his chest. "Calm down, it's gonna be okay. One step at a time. First things first, we need another test result to be sure. Do you want to take another home pregnancy test, or would you rather see a doctor?"
"Lorelai called her OB," said Allegra in a tiny voice muffled by his blue and grey flannel shirt. "She got me an appointment for tomorrow morning."
"Okay, I'll go with you."
"You will?" She drew back, gazing up with tear-stained eyes.
"Of course I will. There's no way I'm letting you go alone. I understand that you're scared about this; I am too. But, Alley, I promise that no matter what the doc says, I'll be right there with you. You jump, I jump."
Allegra broke down completely at his words. Dean pushed her head back to his chest, stroking her red hair. He hoped his heartbeat would help soothe her, but it was beating too fast for that to happen. It raced with cautious excitement.
He couldn't believe that it might actually have happened. That little boy he saw in the future. Their son... Allegra could be carrying him right now. He might be a father. Damn... Dean Winchester as a dad. Who'd have ever believed that?
***
Neither of them slept a wink. They just held each other close, silently thinking about what would happen if the test at the doctor's turned out to be positive. When the first sunbeams penetrated through the curtains, Allegra and Dean got ready for their appointment.
The doctor talked everything through with them, explaining it was more probable it was a false negative if the test was taken close after conception, but that a false positive could also happen on rare occasions. She drew Allegra's blood and told them they would have the results by the end of the day or the following morning at the very latest. They warned the doctor that there might not be a reading on blood type as Allegra was diagnosed with having RH-null a few years ago. Better to use that fairly good excuse right off the bat than get unwarranted questions and snoops threatening to find out the truth about the hybrid Archangel.
The couple didn't say a word the entire drive back from the OB's office. The tension in the car was palpable, and the only thing that grounded them was feeling the other's hand in their own. Once home, Allegra and Dean kept busy. She disappeared into the kitchen with some baking books while he searched the house for chores to do.
It was a little after five when Allegra's cellphone rang. Dean waited with bated breath as she answered and listened to the voice on the other side of the line.
"Thank you," she then said. "Have a nice evening."
She disconnected the call and clutched the phone tightly, pressing it to her breast.
"Well?" asked Dean, hoping for the one thing he only realized today he truly wanted. "What did they say? Are you... Are you pregnant?"
Her golden-brown eyes met his.
"No," she whispered. "It was negative."
The three words shattered Dean's heart. He knew it would've been too good to be true and had prepared himself for the negative, but it still felt as if he lost something dear to him. But he couldn't show his sadness and disappointment to Allegra.
"Well, there you go." Dean forced himself to smile at her. "Crisis averted. We can... relax. And we'll be careful from now on. I'll suit up so you don't have to take the pill if you don't wanna and..."
He was cut off when Allegra suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck and crashed her mouth to his. Her tongue pushed against his lips, begging entrance, which Dean granted, utterly overcome by her action. She broke the kiss off after what seemed like hours, leaving Dean panting, trying desperately to regain the air she stripped from him.
"Someday, Dean," she breathed against his lip. "Someday."
He gazed into Allegra's eyes. They shimmered like fire, burning with her promise. That was enough for him. The past hours had made it more than clear that he may have wanted it, but she hadn't. Though they were in this together, it was her body. She had the final say. And he sure as hell wouldn't disrespect that.
"Someday," he repeated. "I love you, Alley."
"I love you too, Dean."
"I know."
