Chapter 59 - Message from the grave

Allegra lingered back as Dean opened the barn door. She'd never been inside, not even during the months she spent alone here. Gabriel had always told her to stay away because of the dangerous tools inside. She doubted that had actually been the case, but she'd still been reluctant to go in. You never knew with that Archangel, after all.
Dean turned back to her. Allegra gazed into his green eyes. Finally, after all this time, he said it. He told her he loved her. She still couldn't believe it. Part of her expected to wake up in bed at any moment. But this wasn't a dream. Dean was with her, and he loved her. He was in love with her like she was with him. She had never been so happy in her entire life. Which was why she felt slightly anxious upon seeing his serious expression.

"There's something you gotta see," said Dean. "I found something when we were here with Kevin. It's why I asked you to meet me back here after we were done with Roman. I'm sorry I didn't show you this before; I know I should've. I guess I was scared that you would disappear on me again or something."

"I'm not going anywhere," said Allegra. "I promise."

Dean took a deep breath, then grabbed her hand and led her inside. He went straight for the boxes in the back and put the top ones on the ground. Allegra stayed on the sidelines first, but then her eye fell on the words scribbled on one of the boxes - 'Allegra -1979'. She knelt down to open it. Her breath caught. Inside was a baby blanket - her baby blanket. And her Pooh bear, too. She immediately recognized it from the pictures in her old room.
Allegra's eyes flashed to the other boxes on the ground. They all had her name and a year written on them. She opened each one faster and faster. Every single one of them held something precious from her childhood; a doll, a drawing, clothes, books, her first violin... all carefully packed and looking brand new.

"Alley?"

Allegra looked up at Dean with teary eyes. He knelt down and pulled her into an embrace.

"Hey, it's okay." He stroked her hair comfortingly.

"I didn't know." Allegra sobbed. "H-He never told me he... I... I always thought he donated this stuff to charity."

Dean drew back a little and kissed Allegra gently on her brow.

"I know it's hard for you right now, but this isn't what I wanted to show you. This is."

He reached back for a small box, no bigger than a book parcel. Allegra noticed the tape was ripped off. Dean had probably done that the last time he was here. She knew she should probably reprimand him for snooping through personal stuff, but she honestly couldn't have cared less at this point.
Dean pulled out a DVD. It looked homemade. Allegra really hoped this wasn't another Casa Erotica version with Gabriel as the star player. The Winchesters showed her the one they got from him after he died, and she still wished she hadn't watched the damn thing. Calling it disturbing was still putting it mildly.
Then, Allegra saw the envelope at the bottom of the box. It was directed to Dean.

"Dean, what...?" She raised her eyes to him.

"Like I said, I found this when we were here last time. I wanted to tell you then, but I didn't think it was a good idea considering you were with Sam and..."

"I wasn't with..."

Dean threw her a meaningful look.

"Fine, I was with Sam." Allegra rolled her eyes. "Moving on now, please. Did you read the letter?"

"I did. Gabriel writes that he left an important message on the DVD, something that'll change everything for us, apparently. But he asks that we only watch it after..."

"After?"

"After we admit we love each other," finished Dean.

Allegra gasped silently. The last time she spoke to Gabriel, he basically told her that he knew of her feelings for Dean, so that part didn't come as a surprise. But for him to assume Dean would love her back? Gabriel had really been grasping at straws on that one, considering how he used to be back then.

"Alley, you listening?"

Allegra jumped a little at the sudden sound of Dean's voice. She hadn't even noticed him talking this entire time.

"Sorry, what?"

"I said we should watch it."

She stared at him, confused.

"Why?"

"What do you mean, why? Alley, this is what you've been waiting for. Gabriel may have been an asshole, but he clearly cared enough to keep all of this for you and to give you a fighting chance."

Allegra scoffed.

"Gabriel didn't care for anyone but himself," she said darkly. "I learned that the hard way. As for my chances, I'd say they're pretty good right now since Michael and Lucifer are stuck in the Cage."

"What about us?" asked Dean then. "What if whatever Gabriel says gives us a chance too?"

Allegra narrowed her eyes at him and licked her lips.

"You watch it if you want. But don't get your hopes up. 'Cause if I have to choose between trusting Gabriel's lying ass or staying the way I am to keep you alive, that's an easy decision to make."

Not wanting to give Dean the chance to convince her to watch the damn thing, Allegra quickly marched out of the barn, sticking to her resolve. She couldn't put her faith in the man who had lied to her her entire life. Not with something so important. Gabriel never liked Dean. Why would he do anything to help her be with him? Besides, she wouldn't put it past her fake dad to have a final trick up his sleeve. After all, what better way to stick it to Michael or Lucifer than to take away their vessel by having her believe it was finally safe to be with someone?

***

After that fiasco, Dean retrieved Allegra's notes with the scroll from the desk in the attic (she told him she kept them there when he asked her about it a few days ago). Whatever Gabriel had to say could have something to do with the prophecy, so he thought it best to look through everything before watching the DVD. He went down to the living room, hoping Allegra might still join him, but she was stubbornly staying in the kitchen. He briefly considered dragging her ass out, but going from admitting their love for each other to fighting over that bastard Gabriel on the same day wasn't something Dean was willing to do. The least he could do was respect Allegra's decision.
The first thing Dean noticed after unrolling the scroll was the neat handwriting at the bottom. He frowned at it. It wasn't Allegra's, but he'd definitely seen it before. It was a translation, probably of that last sentence, the one that wasn't in Aramaic. Someone figured out what it was after all.

"Destined vessels possesseth the power to do what no other may do, and from truest love cometh truest grace," read Dean aloud.

I guess this is kinda what Amore was talking about. The vessels hold the power, not the Archangels. Suck on that, douche-wats.

He started flipping through Allegra's notes. It amazed him to see what lengths she'd gone to to get to the bottom of that stupid prophecy. Theory after theory was scribbled down and crossed out. Then, he found what he was looking for - the full prophecy translated into English.

'The Lord maketh a mortal Angel who shall hold the torments of the land of the Nile.
Profoundest might unleashed with one loyal and righteous or one banished and fallen.
Brothers in divinity, brothers in mortality, forever in toil over earthly love.
Through blessed union, the seed bringeth forth a burning savior.
Destined vessels possesseth the power to do what no other may do, and from truest love cometh truest grace.'

The line about the brothers was circled twice, and the word 'jealousy?' was written next to it. One circle drew to Michael and Lucifer's names, the other to his own and his brother's. And the part about the blessed union and the burning savior was underlined. Dean scowled at it. This was what this whole thing was leading to; Allegra giving birth to the ultimate being. That was what she feared most.
He glanced over his shoulder, hearing Allegra doing the dishes in the kitchen. Once again, Dean was tempted to make her watch the DVD with him. But when he got up from the couch, he didn't move toward the kitchen. Instead, he walked to the TV and popped Gabriel's DVD in.

Please don't let it be another Casa Erotica hijack

He pressed play and sat back down. Trixie came tripling in and jumped up on the couch next to him. Dean scratched the dog behind her ear before directing his full attention to the screen.
The living room he was sitting in came on. And then, a few moments later, the man himself - Gabriel. He went to sit where Dean sat now. Dean shuffled a bit more to the side, earning him an almost confused look from Trixie when he nudged her.

"Believe me, if you knew him like I did, you wouldn't wanna sit where he sat either."

He looked back up to the screen when Gabriel started talking.

"Well... I suppose I should embrace the cliché and say that, if you're watching this, I'm dead. Or taken prisoner. Or enjoying a really long overdue vacation in Fiji. Either way, I'm not around anymore. So consider this little home video my last will and testament and my parting gift to you, Allegra."

Huh... this seems almost too solemn to be from Gabriel.

"At least I'm hoping I'm talking to my daughter and not only to you, Winchester, you little twerp."

That's better.

"You'd better have told her, Dean. If you haven't, how dare you? You got any idea how much my girl cares for you? She's head over heels for you, so you better grab your cojones and confess everything to her, you hear me? Stop lying to yourself and Allegra, and get over your macho attitude. 'Cause I know you love her, I know it."

Dean fidgetted awkwardly at the little tirade.

"Okay, I don't have that much time, so I'm not gonna get into this any further and just assume you used your head and heart and that Allegra is with you," continued the recording. "Everything I say from now on is for the both of you, though mostly for her."

Gabriel sighed. It seemed like he wanted to say something but didn't know quite where to start. Then, he chuckled weakly at the camera

"Dammit, this is harder than I thought. Okay, here goes. Allegra... Sweetheart, I realize you've got absolutely no reason to trust anything I say here. I've lied to you, and I've abandoned you, and I've... I've caused you a lot of pain. And for that... I'm sorry. I can't undo the bad things that happened to you because of my actions. I can only hope that the memories you have of us will be enough to remember that I did care deeply for you. You may not have been my blood, but you were still my daughter, Allegra. I know it doesn't look like it, but I never stopped loving you, and I never forget about you. And I knew you'd make it, sweetheart, with or without me. You're a tough girl. I mean, just look at what you did to me in Alaska. I was paralyzed for 3 days, buried in I don't know how many inches of snow after you struck me with that lightning bolt."

Dean grinned approvingly at the mental image of Gabriel as a frozen popsicle. Allegra never told him what had happened between her and Gabriel, but he had always hoped she at least kicked his ass or something. He was glad to learn she had.
A noise behind him made Dean turn around. Allegra was leaning against the wall, eyes on the screen. He hadn't noticed her coming into the living room, so he wasn't sure how long she'd been standing there. But from the look of her, it had been long enough.
Allegra hurriedly wiped her tears away and joined Dean on the couch. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it comfortingly. Whatever came next, they would face it together.

"On that note, I wanna teach you one final lesson. You've no doubt mastered the plagues by now, yet your human side will always keep them from reaching their full potential. There is a tool that could enhance them, but I really hope you never come across it."

"Too late." Allegra scoffed under her breath, prompting Dean to move closer to her.

"The thing that'll do the trick, though, is your grace. You awaken that, and your human side will be pressed down. Don't worry; it won't go away. It'll just... give the reins to the Archangel inside you. But you're gonna need training to accomplish this. And for that, you need the angels. I know, I know; you're probably not feeling too keen to ask them for help. Trust me; I'd rather you didn't talk to any of them ever again. But they are your best bet. And I do trust a few of them. Some may reach out to you when I'm not around anymore, so be nice. They can help you out and teach you how to control your grace. When you can do that, you control all of your powers. However, the way to unlock your grace isn't with the help of another angel, Allegra. That has to come from inside you, from your heart. And this, Dean, is where you come in."

Allegra glanced over at Dean. He just returned her confused expression,  hiding the fact that he already knew what Gabriel was talking about.

"The purest emotion one can feel is love. It strengthens you. It changes the very essence of your soul. Having love, feeling love, and experiencing love will give your shield extra juice, and you'll probably even be able to heal people one day without even breaking a sweat. But losing love, that's the real danger here. Because then you'll start doing things out of anger, vengeance even. You could kill someone, Allegra. Human, demon, and angel, too... Just end them all with a snap of your fingers. So, if you two wanna go down this road and be with each other, you better be damn sure about it. 'Cause I don't want to see my daughter become a murderer. Not because of someone like you, Winchester."

Allegra lowered her head and pressed her lips together. Dean squeezed her hand again. He knew what she was thinking about. It was on his mind as well. But Amazons were monsters, not innocents. Ganking them didn't make Allegra a murderer; it made her a Hunter.
The recording went on.

"Now, for the important part. Since I was forced to take care of you - and I don't regret a single moment of it, I swear - I made it my personal mission to learn all I could about you and your destiny. You'll find my research in my room upstairs, so if there's anything you want to check, you can find it there. You, Allegra, are the key figure to a prophecy. A real doozy one too. Hopefully, my associate managed to tell you a thing or two about it when he gave you the prophecy scroll. If not, or if you don't have it yet, the basic gist is this; God intended for a child, a savior, to be born from your union with either Michael or Lucifer. What he didn't mention, and what I couldn't find, was a definite answer on what or who your child will be a savior of.
"If it's Michael's kid, I'm fairly sure he'll just eradicate all demons so that angels can be the supreme beings. It wouldn't change much for mortals, I think, though Michael wouldn't mourn those lost in the crossfire. Lucifer is another story entirely. He hates both angels and demons, so there's no telling what he'll use the baby for. That's another reason why I'm hoping you're with Dean and not Sam. Gigantor may be easier to handle and definitely smarter and kinder than big bro, but considering he's Lucifer meat suit, he's not the right guy for you."

Dean heard Allegra's breathing change. He wished he could wrap her up in a warm protective shield like she had so often done with him. Anything to keep her from freaking out.

"Now, if you do have the scroll, you'll notice that the last sentence is written in another language. That's because it was added later by the original scribe. Don't bother looking it up; it's not a language known to man, demon, or angel. It can only be read by the author himself or by someone destined to interpret the word of God, a prophet. That last sentence is vital, Allegra. Please, find the prophet and ask him to translate it for you. The next in line is a boy named Kevin Tran. He should get into his powers soon, if I'm not mistaken."

That's why the handwriting looked so familiar. Dean groaned silently at the realization. Allegra asked Kevin for help. The symbols on the scroll were probably similar to the ones on the Leviathan tablet.

"Kevin will prove that what I'm about to say now is not a lie. I wouldn't do that to you. Not after what you've already been through. I'm done keeping the secrets." Gabriel took a deep breath and sat forward, leaning his elbows onto his knees. "When we last spoke, you asked me what the Winchesters' part in all of this was. I didn't want to answer you then. I thought I could still protect you, but I've realized that's not up to me anymore. So, cards out on the table; without the Winchesters, my brothers can't do squat with you. They need their destined vessels. If they take anyone else, they'll suffer the same fate Eric did. Only the Winchesters can do what no other man can do. I'm gonna say this very clearly so that you'll understand what I'm saying; you can be with Dean if you want to be with him. Dean won't be another Eric. He won't die if you two... go to fourth. Because, to put it frankly, you were made to be with him."

The sudden release of Allegra's hold on him made Dean turn his head to her. She was in utter shock. He opened his mouth to say something, but she held up her hand.

"Don't." Her lip quivered. "Please, Dean... Don't."

She sat tense, her entire body listening to every word Gabriel said.

"As I said, don't take my word for it. Find the prophet. Go through my research. And just... take a chance. I realize I'm asking a lot from you, sweetheart, but you have to follow your heart in this. Don't listen to what anyone else says. They'll try to convince you you have to wait for Michael to possess Dean because you'll kill him otherwise, but that is the real lie. That is how they keep control over you. Don't let them. Don't let fear stop you from being with the person you love. Hold on to your love - both of you. Stay together in sickness and health, the good times and the bad, and all that other stuff. You have my b... my bl... Ugh, I'm gonna hurl. You... You have my blessing! There, I said it! It's out!"

Gabriel shuddered as if he'd been forced to do the nastiest thing in the world (which Dean found slightly amusing since the Archangel had been in for pretty much all kinds of crazy) but quickly regained himself and stared straight into the camera again.

"That's it, I guess. I'm gonna go and... probably die now. No tears, please. Can't stand them, you know that." He sighed. "God, I wish I could've seen you one last time, Allegra. And Dean, take care of her for me. I'm trusting you with the only person I've ever loved in my entire existence. Don't screw this up; I'll make you suffer if you do. I don't know how but I promise you, I will."

Gabriel got up and walked to the camera. He got down just before the lens, smiling sadly.

"Love you, kiddo."

The screen went black.
