Chapter 2
"Did you get a good look at her?"
"Yes."
"Yes what?"
"Yes, sir.' The boy bowed his head in reverence, his gaze shifting to the ground. He was caught off guard when he saw the water rippling beneath his feet. The moon was reflected on the smooth glass surface, and under that he could see the sea churning- and yet the house stayed afloat as if it was held there by an invisible force- which he supposed it was.
"She should be about eighteen right now." He looked up at this and nodded without a word. The man before him looked back at him thoughtfully and he could feel those steel-grey eyes boring into him. Peering into his very soul, which again he supposed they could. Moonlight shone down upon his snow-white hair, turning it silver, and his long black robes swirled around him in the light breeze
"Do you think she saw you?" the King asked. His voice low yet filled with so much venom and a promise that he would skin him alive if he lied.
He knew that being skinned alive was just one of the many possible outcomes if he did lie straight to his face. He had heard rumors of people's souls being ripped from them. He had heard of their hearts being frozen solid and then being crushed.
"No."
As soon as the word left his mouth, he could feel his blood going cold inside his veins. He could feel the weight of that one word. That one lie crushing down upon him and it nearly broke him.
"So she can't see through the Haze." A pause. "Interesting."
He remained standing there for walking away without being dismissed would be yet another grave mistake that the King would not tolerate under any circumstances. He winced, remembering the last time someone had lied. He had been there to see the consequences of that lie. The culprit had been one of the King's soldiers and he had lied about some weapons that had gone missing. Of course the King had figured out it was a lie and had summoned the soldier to his courtroom. He shook his head, trying to get the gruesome image of the blood of that soldier splattered all over the walls.
"She still goes by her own name," the King said more to himself than anyone else. He did his best to hide the smile that threatened to form on his lips as he heard that. He was glad she still went by her own name. At least that part of her had not been taken from her- was still hers. Others like her had not been so lucky. "Keep an eye on her," He looked up to see the King gazing at him with an unreadable expression on his face. He nodded. "I want daily reports," he said sharply and he nodded. "We still have two months before she is to be dead. I want to know every little thing about her before then; who she loves, what powers of hers have manifested, if she truly can wield the Key."
"Yes, sir,' he bowed his head yet again and waited for his dismissal.
"Do not disappoint me, Logan," the King sneered and tilted his head to the side, a silent order to leave and a promise of the wrath he would face if he ever did disappoint him.
He walked back to his quarters, his mind filled with possible outcomes of the war that would soon be upon them. He pictured Eve with her long dark brown hair and piercing grey eyes. Of course, too many here she would be completely ordinary- nothing special. But he could not help a smile from stretching over his face. Eve was far from ordinary, and she would know soon. He would make sure of that.
