Chapter 2
~Previously~
"Well, I don't mind you asking, but I would have thought that you would have guessed with me and the music room and I doubt the girls have showed you the library, but I'm not a 'normal' Demi-god, I'm a daughter of both Athena and Apollo." Mum said to them, wait doesn't that make her a goddess, I'm guessing that the others had the same idea because we all asked simultaneously.
"Okay.... Wait, what?!?!"
~Now~
After mum told us that little yet shocking piece of information, we all had different reactions. Thalia, Percy, Jason, Piper, Leo, Hazel and Frank were all looking towards mum with expressions that read (from what I can tell) 'why-Athena-and-Apollo', Anna (I'm just gonna shorten her name) had a smug expression lace with slight shock, so it kind of read something along the lines of 'okay-she-is-my-half-sister' and, well... Alice, Lily and myself all had our jaws dropped and our eyes practically popping out of their sockets.
"And judging by your expressions...." Mum trailed off, pointing at Thalia and Percy, "....that you have had a few run-ins with either mum or dad." She finished, as she said that they both visibly cringed, so I'm personally taking that as a 'yes'.
"Trust us, we have had one too many run-ins with Apollo and that darn lyre." Percy groaned getting a nod of agreement from Anna.
"Not to mention that car..." Thalia trailed off and Percy and her own eyes visibly widened and they both also visibly shuddered.
"Wait, wait, wait.... car?!?!" I exclaimed out of shock, because according to legend he drives a chariot not a car.
"What happened?" Mum said as the same time as I exclaimed my sentence, but she was speaking as if this was a daily occurrence to her, which it probably is.
"Well... Thalia got to drive it, but... she... um... crashed it into the lake at camp, so we had angry Naiads on our backs and dad wasn't to happy with Apollo for allowing a teenager to drive his sun car." Percy explained to mum and now I can understand why they cringed at the mention of the 'sun car'.
"Wait, I thought it was a chariot that Apollo drives, not a car?" I said but it came out as more of a question, well what do you expect, I am a Greek citizen and am a Greek myth and legend geek. Mum looked at me and shrugged her shoulders in a gesture that sort of said that she doesn't know why.
"Okay then, anyway, you mentioned a camp, what type of camp is it?" Alice, i think? Asked out of pure curiosity looking mainly at Percy but still having the other Demi-gods and mum in her and Lily's line of sight, while I myself started to feel a little lightheaded, well do you blame me, literally 4 hours ago I thought that I was a normal teenage orphan that believed in the Greek myths more than the importance of all life itself.
"Okay, um, basically it's a camp where we go to train and learn to use our abilities and also learn to live in the mortal world, and.... um.... you three sort of have to go to it, like right now before the Minotaur's friends start appearing." Thalia explained to us but once she finished she got a worried look from mum.
"What Minotaur?!" Mum yelled at her, causing all of us to look back and forth between mum and each other with expressions that read something around 'do-not-tell-her'.
"Uh... nothing, but, yeah they are right, we really need to go, like, right now!" Anna stuttered nervously while looking at the rest of us and then setting her eyes on mum but when she was looking at mum her eyes quickly flashed to me, well... more like my necklace, mum looked and then recognition of some sort flashed across her eyes.
"Well, I guess the quickest way to get to Long Island is through a certain god or a certain goddess..." Mum trailed of looking at the Demi-gods and then at me to see if it would click of who she is on about, the first reaction she had was from Thalia and myself.
"GODDESS!!" We yelled in unison then it sort of clicked in the others of who she was on about and they all nodded their heads in agreement, and if you are wondering who she is on about, well, she is on about my favorite goddess and her twin, the two and only, Artemis and Apollo, I was literally jumping on the balls of my feet and grinning like the Cheshire cat.
"Who wants to call her?" Hazel questioned us but they all looked towards me in unison, well not me exactly, more like my necklace once again, I wonder why they they keep looking at it, I mean I know it's the symbol of Artemis but it's getting weird.
"What?" I asked looking between them all, while they all looked at me with an eyebrow raised and looking from the necklace to my eyes.
"I can't believe I haven't noticed this, but have you realized that she has the same eyes as her." Thalia said to the others but mainly Percy and mum, who nodded in return.
"You don't think that she is... you know...." Percy trailed of looking warily at mum, Anna and Thalia, who each in turn took a closer look at me as if comparing me to someone through their memory- which they probably are.
"Um... okay, following on from earlier, as you all have seemed to have decided that it will be me, how do I summon a goddess, especially Artemis?" I asked the Demi-gods and mum, still being slightly uncomfortable from their stares.
"Well, first we have to wait til sundown, then we have to be outside and throw a drachma towards the ground and call out her name." Mum answered looking towards the others for confirmation, well she was actually looking more towards Thalia.
"Or we could call her through Serena's necklace as it is a symbol of Artemis and whisper the goddess' name." Thalia said with a shrug of her shoulders, once again looking at my necklace. "Quick question though, when you got that necklace, do you remember who gave it to you?" She added on with a genuine look of curiosity on her face.
"Well, seeing as I have had it since I was a baby at the orphanage in Athens, I honestly have barely any memory of who gave it to me, all I remember of the person that gave it to me is that they have grayish-silver eyes, like mine." I explained with a slight shrug of my own shoulders. We all walked outside as it was a couple of minutes till sundown, and as Thalia explained to earlier instead of throwing a drachma I clutched my necklace in my right hand and whispered Artemis' name along with a polite 'please' at the end, because I do NOT want to be impolite to a goddess. After a few minutes the moon began to raise and if you took a closer look to just in front of the moon, you could just about see a silver chariot of sorts, which looked as if it was pulling the moon across the dark sky littered with stars, as the moon drew higher in the sky and the chariot come closer to us, I noticed that there was actually a figure in the chariot, a female figure.
"Is that....?" Lily trailed off her jaw dropping in awe, looking at the female inside the chariot that basically looked like an older version of me, from what I could tell, from her waist length ginger hair, splatter of freckles over her nose, grayish-silver eyes and the only differences between us really that you could see, is that she had silver streaks in her hair and was wearing a silver circlet on her head, before anyone else could answer I replied to Lily's question.
"Yep, that's Artemis, goddess of the hunt, archery, the moon, natural environment, chastity, virginity and head of the hunters of the gods." I answered for Lily, while everyone was looking at me in... awe?, well apart from mum, probably because she knows that I can name every Greek god or goddess and what they are the god or goddess of, even Artemis looked surprised at how I was able to remember that.
"Oh my, not anyone I have encountered throughout all my years has yet to remember all that or even majority of those you said, young one." Artemis said to me once she landed her chariot in the backyard, a few feet in front of us, and if you haven't guessed yet the backyard is the same as the house, huge. "Tell me, young one to test your knowledge, who are my parents and full siblings?" She added on, probably not expecting me to know the answers.
"That's easy, your father is Zeus, king of the gods and god of the skies, thunder, lightning, hospitality, honor, kingship, and order also no offence but he has massive anger issues, your mother is Leto the Greek titaness of motherhood,, mythology, pictures and protectress of the young and finally you only full sibling is your younger twin brother, Apollo, who is the god of music, poetry, truth, prophecy, healing, plague, light and the sun." I answered, once again receiving looks of awe from mum, the twins, the Demi-gods and Artemis.
"Once again, hardly anyone has ever known that about me. You have been teaching her Isobel." Artemis said looking towards mum, who shook her head in reply.
"Actually, Serena has been teaching me on both Greek and Roman myths and legends since I adopted her a few years ago." Mum explained while giggling slightly when the goddess developed a shocked expression on her face.
"Well, what do you expect when I had spent ten or eleven years of my life in an orphanage in Athens, where they would tell you every single one of the myths and legends as a bedtime story or when you ask them to, especially when you were found with a necklace that is also a symbol of a god or goddess." I told them with a slight hint of sass at the beginning which sort of got rid of the Demi-god's surprised expressions, but then once I finished for some reason Artemis had a sorrowful? expression on her face, as if she did something she wishes she didn't.
"Anyway, back to the reason on why I was summoned, what do you need?" Artemis questioned us with a kind glint in her eyes, more so to us girls than the boys, Leo in particular.
"Lady Artemis, we need your help to get us to camp as soon as possible because us being together, along with three unclaimed Demigods and a goddess, is not probably the best mixture there is where monsters have already attacked this morning, the Minotaur to be exact." Thalia explained to the maiden goddess in front of us, who then developed an expression that was a mixture of worry and understanding on her face.
"Okay, then I'm guessing you thought it better me than Apollo as it would be quicker. So, this chariot will not fit all thirteen of us, so please step back for a moment please." She politely shuffled us back a few paces and as we were doing so a luminous white glow came from the chariot and I instinctively stepped in front of the twins and turned them away from the chariot as well as myself, once the glow diminished I turned us back so we were once again facing where the chariot was, but now in it's place was a grayish-silver mini van. "Okay, Thalia get in the back please." Artemis ordered and straight away the said Grace child made a beeline for the seat in the middle of the very back row with her brother and Percy on either side of her with Lily on the other side of Jason, Jason clutching the life out of his sister and Percy being clutched to death by Thalia, as well as Jason getting a death grip hug from Lily, the same situation happening with mum, Hazel, Frank and Alice in the next row, Piper, Leo and Anna all just sat normally in the row behind the front with the two girls giggling at Percy and Jason's reaction to being in the minivan, well Percy I understand because his domain is the sea, but Thalia and Jason, their domain is the sky and their terrified, so with all the other seats taken up, it only left the driver's seat in which Artemis was going to sit and the front passenger seat, just bloody great. So, with that I sat in the seat next to Artemis and quickly buckled myself in, knowing that this was probably going to go over my comfort speed that I was used to from planes I've been on before.
"Okay, so there is two children of Zeus here and both of them are sitting as far from the front and from a window as possible, so what happened to make you so scared of your father's own domain?" I stated the first part to everyone in the minivan, but then directed the question to the two Grace children that are clutching the life out of Percy and Thalia in Jason's case, who were now shaking out of their wits in the two middle seats of the very back row of the mini van.
"DO. NOT. ASK." They both replied in unison, breaking up the sentence so it sounded as if they were talking to toddlers, I giggled a little at their reaction which caused them both to send a death glare so hard that if looks could kill, I would probably be in Tartarus by now, so I immediately stop giggling.
"Okay." I said quietly in almost a whisper, my head hanging low because I didn't want to look into their glare that they were still sending me.
"Alright then, off we go and stop sending Serena those glares otherwise you will be sitting up here in the front or fly on your own." Artemis called out, loud enough so that the two Grace's in the back could hear and the immediately widened their eyes at her statement and then averted their gazes as Artemis sent her own glare back at them, so with that the van veered back a little bit the lifted twenty or thirty feet of the ground and sped off at an unimaginable speed, causing the two children of Zeus, the twins, Hazel and mum to cling on tighter to the person to the point where they were basically suffocating them and scream at the top of their lungs, which for your information is really loud, and causing Artemis, Leo and myself to laugh at the adrenaline that is now pumping through our veins due to the altitude and speed we are now traveling at.
"Are those two always like this when they are in the air?" Alice wheezed out, towards Anna and Piper, as she was currently being crushed by mum in the row behind them and they are the only calm ones in the minivan at the moment.
"Yeah, you should really see what it's like when they have to fly on their own, it's hilarious." Piper said as she and Anna started laughing at the memory and earning glares from the two Demigods screaming the loudest in the very back of the van, as a thunder and lightning storm was brewing outside, I knew it wasn't naturally caused, so I stopped laughing and turned the best I could to face the two Grace children and produce my own glare.
"Stop causing this storm because if you don't it will only make the journey longer and even bumpier than it is right now and if monsters attacked, we will not be able to defend ourselves, so cut it out the pair of you." I told them while looking between them straight in the eye and deepening my voice to show that I was not joking, to which the stopped glaring at Piper and Anna and look into my eyes and widen their eyes at the piece of information I just told them, probably because they don't want to be in the air longer than they have to at the moment and the storm then disappeared as if it was never there in the first place. We then spent a few hours in complete silence with a couple of screams and giggles in some parts of the journey where Artemis would speed up or go higher into the sky.
"Two little questions that I haven't asked, what did you use to summon me earlier and who summoned me?" Artemis asked looking through the rear view mirror and then at me, everyone in the back quietened down and looked towards me again, well the necklace I always wear.
(Pic below is the charm on the necklace)
"I did, Lady Artemis, and I used my necklace that I have had since as far back as I can remember." I quietly said looking down at the charm and playing with it in my hands, like I sometimes do when I'm nervous, the said goddess quickly looked down at my hands because my hand were covering the top of the charm and she gently removed my hand that was covering the charm, so she could get a better look and once she glanced at the charm her eyes widened and started to water a little as she slowly looked back at the window in front of us, which I could now see the outline of a small field of strawberries, and a hill not to far from it with an archway on top with a huge pine tree to the side, but the most amazing thing was that after a few minutes after passing the archway, you could see the roofs of maybe fifteen buildings and the flames of a fireplace that reached ten feet in the air that was changing colors as the people around it looked to be having fun, before a few spotted the minivan. When the van finally landed on the ground not far from the cabins, the van was starting to be surrounded by campers and two adults, one being in a wheelchair and the other standing besides him a bit pudgy and wearing a horrible Hawaiian shirt, shorts and sandals. The Demi-gods in the minivan started to get out of the van with the twins and mum following right behind them, but I stayed in the van slightly scared of what they will think of me, as a few of them looked like the type to bully the new comers but a few of them looked kind enough but as I have learnt, looks can be deceiving, probably sensing my weariness, Artemis turned towards me and took my hands in her hand as she used the other to raise my head so I would be looking directly into her eyes.
"Serena, you don't need to be scared, everyone here may have differences between them, but when the time comes for it they will do whatever they can to protect their home and the people here, and anyway I was watching your battle with the Minotaur earlier and anyone with that great of a shot to take down that dreaded beast has enough will to get through this camp, I know this because Percy was able to kill the Minotaur as well when he didn't even know any battle tactics or anyone to guide him at that time, so if he was able to get through this camp and survive his destiny and the destiny of the seven, then I know you will be able to survive through bullies and anything coming your way, now how about you come out there with your head held up high, introduce yourself to a few of the campers, while I talk to Chiron and Dionysus about something, but know this, Serena, if you ever need to talk to someone you can always talk to Chiron, your sisters, Isobel, the seven, Thalia or myself." Artemis told me looking into my eyes and giving me an encouraging smile that by the end of her little speech I was probably mirroring and lightly nodded my head and took a deep breathe before getting out of the van and immediately felt a little different, I felt as if the moon and Artemis along with it was giving me courage and enhancing my senses, I could also feel that my clothes were changing I looked down and gasped along with everyone who was now watching me, my school uniform that I was wearing was gone and instead I was in a blueish-silver Greek toga dress, silver bracelets curling around my fore arms, I lifted the bottom of my dress and found silver Greek sandals, I then slowly reached for my hair that was now behind my shoulders and pulled a bit in front and saw, once again silver streaks going through it, my hand shakily traveled to the top of my head and felt that part of my hair had been put into a braid-headband style and just behind it was what felt like a leaf circlet.
(Her new outfit is below)
(Her circlet is below)
Everyone's eyes then trailed up to above my head and those who didn't have their jaw dropped before, definitely had them dropped now as they all kneel down, I just stood there awestruck, then I slowly looked up and saw something that should be impossible to happen, because right there floating above my head was the symbol of Artemis and to the side of it, smaller in size were the symbols of Apollo, Aphrodite, Hecate, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, Dionysus, Pan, Athena and Ares.
"What in the world..." I trailed off as it all suddenly came to me, on why I look so similar to Artemis, why I have had a symbol of her since I was a baby and why I have had a fascination with each of those gods and goddesses more than any of the others that symbols are now fading away from on top of my head, suddenly the man who was in the wheelchair stood up and revealed a lower body to that of a horse, he is a centaur, nope actually, he is THE Chiron, trainer of heroes.
"All hail, Serena May Bella, daughter of Artemis and blessed by Apollo, Aphrodite, Hecate, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, Dionysus, Pan, Athena and Ares." He states loudly so that the entire camp could hear and I even saw some people, no wait, their nymphs, come out of the forest literally and bow their respects, that is the last thing I remember before everything turned black and my body hit the ground.
