The Quest
Annabeth's POV
Did Artemis just hug Agnes, or am I dreaming? I pinched my arm hard. Ow. Real, then.
Agnes patted Artemis's back and whispered something. Artemis nodded and and smiled.
They went to Cabin Eight with amusement. I nearly fell off my chair. I was that shocked.
Agnes's POV
My gods. The Olympians loaded her with five huge stacks of work? No wonder she broke down. I mean, hello, can't you have free time to rest? I guess not. Quote 'If this is Olympian justice, I will have none of it.' unquote.
'It's gonna be okay,' I comforted her.
'It's not,' she muttered. 'You don't understand. I have to write two hundred words for each paper.'
I stopped in my tracks. 'WHAT?'
She grasped my hand firmly. 'I will finish it,' she said. 'Do not worry.'
I smiled, though it was hard to through the worry. 'That's our Artemis. If you need any help, I'm here for you.'
She shook her head. 'Remember what I told you. A quest. I quest is much more important than helping me. You will have to recover a particular magical item, lost millennia ago, never mentioned in history. It is called the Pythonecklace.'
When I went to the campfire, everyone started bombarding me with questions.
'Why did you hug a goddess?'
'Do you have a really close friendship with her or something?'
'Enough!' Chiron shouted.
'But -' Annabeth protested.
Chiron gave her a stern look. 'One question, Annabeth,' he said wearily. 'I hope you do not waste the chance.'
Annabeth nodded. 'Agnes, do you -'
Rachel suddenly spewed green fog.
My mouth tasted like blood. 'Oh... Sh -'
Artemis ran and covered my mouth. I silently cursed in my mind.
'Six shall go to the land without rain,
One shall experience the land without reign.
Hunter shall feel the pain of the unknown,
Two shall be be separated in the land of Rome,
Two will recover the jewel,
And travel safely to the enemy.'
Moment of silence. Then Mom released my mouth.
' - oot.'
Annabeth spoke up. 'Who should go?'
'Hunter.' Thalia Grace came over without anyone noticing.
Annabeth looked at Thalia with agreement. 'Maybe you, yes.'
'No, I mean Agnes,' she said. 'She is Lady Artemis's prized one, her favorite huntress.'
Annabeth stared at me. 'You - huntress - prized?'
Oh, let me translate: 'You are the prized huntress of Artemis?'
I nodded silently. Well, I guess demigods nod a lot. Demigods at Camp Jupiter nodded at lot, too.
'Then Agnes is the leader of the quest,' Chiron said. 'Agnes, you may choose four demigods to be on a quest with you.'
About half the boys raised their hands.
I snarled. 'No males. Only females.'
The Girls of Olympus, at least the ones that are here, shrunk back.
'Um, no,' Annabeth said. 'I like some peace.'
'Yup,' agreed Piper.
'I'll have to agree with Annabeth,' Hazel announced.
'I wasn't going to choose you,' I said. 'Aly, Rhinestone, Blossom, Rysa, you're going.'
Rysa pumped a fist. 'Woo-hoo!'
'Rysa, going on a quest is not something you do for fun,' Percy warned.
Rysa rolled her eyes, and sent me a look, like: Are you kidding me?
I know, I agreed. Percy is so oblivious sometimes. But males are created to be stupid. You must try to forgive them.
Rysa laughed, which got a few stares.
'Percy, I am not joking around,' Rysa told him. 'I'll be careful. I promise.'
'But if you die, I'm gonna find you in the Underworld and kick your butt for that.'
Rysa shrugged. 'Sure.'
'The Underworld is a mess,' Rhinestone whispered to me. 'Hades left with Persephone to do something three days ago. Now shades are running here and there, escaping from the Fields of Punishments to Elysium.'
'I know what we're supposed to do,' I whispered back. 'We must get this thing called the Pythonecklace.
Aly leaned forward to listen to our conversation.
'Later, Aly,' I snapped. 'I'll tell you the details later.'
'So when would they leave?' Nico asked. He would've jumped up, but Will Solace restrained him.
Nico grumbled about doctors and orders.
'Tomorrow,' Chiron said.
Aly grinned at Nico. 'Don't you worry,'
'We'll get back,' Blossom finished.
Nico's face was priceless.
Chiron wheeled his wheelchair. 'Bed, everyone. It has been a long night. Good night.'
Annabeth came over. 'Couldn't sleep?'
I smiled. 'Yeah.'
'First quests can be daunting, I know,' she told me.
'No, not that,' I said. 'I'm just wondering why can't Artemis have a child?'
Annabeth smiled too. She ruffled my hair. 'Agnes, Artemis is a maiden goddess. She doesn't have children.'
'Yeah... But what if Hera cursed her?'
'Well then, that's completely another story. But I did hear a rumor about a daughter of Artemis at Camp Jupiter.' Annabeth said.
'I think she ran away,' I told her. 'What does she look like, anyway, according to the rumor?'
'She has black raven hair, midnight black eyes, unlike you,' she touched a book.
I flinched, but luckily the movement won't be noticeable by Annabeth due to darkness. 'Did everyone hate her?'
She looked at me. 'Yes. They boycotted her.'
'Even Frank, Hazel, Reyna?' I asked, pretending to be surprised.
'No, not them,' she answered. 'They were nice to her, so even they were boycotted, even though Hazel is the centurion of the Fifth Cohort, and Frank and Reyna are praetors.'
'Did she have a friend except for them?'
She laughed softly. 'You ask a lot of questions, Agnes, even for a child of Athena.'
'Thanks,' I muttered.
She studied me. 'Actually, you look a lot like me.'
I feigned a look of surprise. 'Really?'
'Yeah. You have blond hair too, like me, and gray eyes.'
I tried to change the subject. 'Um, Annabeth, can you train with me?'
It worked. 'Me? I'm one of the best swordsmen in the Greek and Roman camps!'
'I haven't fought before in Camp Half-Blood yet,' I insisted.
She sighed. 'Fine.'
I tried charmspeaking. 'Train sword-fighting and archery with me.'
The charmspeak worked and she led to the arena.
'Don't go easy on me,' I said.
She shrugged. 'Just wear some armor.'
'Um, okay,' I murmured amd put on the armor.
Her eyes widened. 'You've got every single strap right!'
'Is it?' I looked down. It was.
'Now for your weapon,' she said.
I hurriedly took my weapon. 'Here.'
'Okay then. Let's start,' she decided.
(Before they start fighting, I want to say I'm really terrible at fighting scenes, so don't kill me if I describe those scenes really weirdly.)
I spun my sword as Annabeth charged in with her dagger she got from an Egyptian staff(correct me if I'm wrong).
She tried to slash but I stopped her. I did this really weird move that Reyna taught me. Her dagger fell across the arena.
'How?' she asked curiously.
I hesitated. 'Instincts?'
She didn't question me, but I figured she was bursting to ask.
'Hey!' shouted Rysa's voice. 'HEY! You two, get back here! Agnes, we're going!'
I stirred. 'Annabeth, I'll see you after my quest.'
She stuck out her hand. 'Good luck.'
I shook it, and I joined the four in the van.
