Chapter XCIII: Digression

It only took less than a minute for something extremely abrupt to happen. The place and the time didn't matter to me, there was the person I loved locked in the bathroom between the flames.

My heart was in my throat and I had to restrain the scrapes of my sanity in Mrs. Christina's arms outside of the cabin.

These vile flames threatened to take down the person I love the most and I wasn't going to watch anymore. With every ounce of my energy, I purposely shoved Mrs. Christina before running inside to help Mr. Clay.

I didn't hear anything, it was like I had blocked my own hearing when I saw two silhouettes at the end of the hall with flames on each side, the orange heat expanded further but it couldn't stop me from helping.

"Levy, I am here." I shouted, I tugged my shorts down as much as possible but it didn't budge. I remembered how we changed yesterday after the long ride and planned to go to their gang partners today. I couldn't see anything from the smoke so I opted for option two: running through the flames.

I did just that and it took Levy off-guard when I reached to both of them, grasping my hand with Levy's and trying to pull him through the flames. Mr. Clay rushed behind us as we all coughed and inhaled the nasty smoke.

My head felt light and I was about to faint but I willed myself to go through this for them. They were like my family, I couldn't abandon them for my needs. Not when they were risking their lives for me.

"What the fuck were you thinking?" Levy exploded on me and I whimpered as I witnessed the anger on his face. He had tiny bruises under his jaw from the fire but that was about it and I was internally relieved for him. His clothes were slightly ripped and I could tell by the mismatched jeans and shirt that he didn't expect this incident to happen so early in the morning.

"I just saved you." I tried to lighten his mood up but as always, he was quick to get cold on me.

"What you did was stupid." he snapped and my eyes widened at his outburst as he cursed under his breath and turned to walk away.

"He was right. I saved him in time and we weren't going to die." His dad uttered before following his son to God knows where.

Mrs. Christina looked stressed and I could tell that she was holding herself back from bursting into tears so I approached her and stood next to her, wrapping my arms around her.

"You know, we never wanted our lives to be that way. I got into a marriage with a gang leader and got our son involved too, we were supposed to find our salvation after we killed our enemies but as you see, the other gangs thinks that we are traitors, we are going to be hunted down forever until they end us." She whimpered after what she said and I could finally see Mrs. Christina's fear that she tried so bad to hide.

"We won't allow this to happen, we have something they want so we need to retaliate. I knew from the moment that they saw me, they were out for me and burning the cabin down was just another warning to let us know that they knew about our hiding place." I finished my speech and for once, Mrs. Christina smiled at me.

"I am so proud of you although I don't know why you stick with us for the sake of my son since you're not obligated to but thank you, honey, for being on our side," Mrs. Christina sniffled after she said that and I hugged her.

"Now, let's go find these assholes," she cursed and I laughed at her attitude as we let the house burn down and walked towards the boys.

After an exact hour of kicking the sand and wiping our sweat from the heat, we finally spot them sitting beside a beautiful, crystal lake. Mr. Clay didn't notice our presence, he was busy filling Levy's head with ideas.

Levy's eyes met mine for a short while before averting his eyes down to his fists. He was trying to avoid me but I wouldn't have his attitude so early, I straddled him right in front of his parents and wrapped my hands around his neck.

"I wanted to be the one to save you, I wanted to protect you. I know you had your dad with you but you have been lifting so much dead weight on your shoulders, I should have my turn in comforting you too." I confessed and his eyes softened at me before claiming my lips with his in a heated kiss.

We pulled away as Levy hugged me and his mother cooed at us like she was a fan of our relationship.

"Back to our subject," Mr. Clay interrupted our affection, "the good thing is that we still have the key so we can go now to their territory and the bad thing is that I think they are tracking us in their system."

"I can distract them and you'd be able to unlock their door by that key." I offered and Levy cut me off with a warning glare at me.

"She's right," Mrs. Christina defended me, "she can be their distraction while we finish them off with the other gang affiliations." I was proud for a moment that I helped them but it deflated as soon as Levy pushed me away gently and stood up.

"No mom, they could kill her," Levy sneered, "she will be safe in my aunt's house, we can't risk her life." He suggested and I felt anger seeping into my body.

"You can't decide what I will do, I will distract them whether you like it or not." I snapped in determination and if looks could kill, I would be six deeps under.

"I will make sure you don't. This isn't your mission, you don't fit with us." My lower lip trembled at his harsh words but I forced myself not to cry.
