WinWin made the last turn into his room. I scanned the dark gray walls that were mostly bare except for a couple of awards and a large bookshelf taking up most of the wall.
"What's the bookshelf and books for?" I asked WinWin. "Are they braille?"
He nodded, removing himself from my support. "At least most of them are. The others are books from my childhood before I was blind. I couldn't stand to get ride of them. Sometimes I open the ones I remember the story of and flip through the pages, imagining the story as I recall it when I read it a long time ago. Not that I remember what I imagined in a visual sense, but what the words would've said and other fictional senses."
My eyes lingered on WinWin's hand as it lightly traced the wall to a closet door. Inside, all his shirts and sweatshirts were organized in color order with markers between each set of color. He found a navy blue short sleeved shirt and tossed it over his shoulder.
"I'm really impressed by how well you get around despite the challenge." I took a couple steps further into his room.
"I've gotten used to it after a while." He closed the door and reached out to the dresser nearby. WinWin pulled out the first drawer and grabbed a pair of black shorts. "At first I was a mess and got so frustrated. I went through a really dark time then."
"What helped you get through it?"
The shirt and shorts were set down on the corner of his bed. "My sister was the biggest help. She was always incredibly supportive and wanted the best for me. We have a dog named Figure, but she isn't trained well enough to be a guide dog, so my parents invested in a seeing eye dog named Penny." WinWin pulled his arms into his shirt, but paused. "Yuta, would you mind turning around?"
"What?"
"Like... don't watch me?"
I chuckled. "Is WinWin shy?"
"Sicheng is blind and clumsy, so it's embarrassing."
"Okay," I slowly turned to face the wall. "I'm not looking."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Instead, I read through the awards hanging on his walls. A couple were academic awards and even an art award. There seemed to be one or two each year until around 2010. I guessed that he must've lost his sight around that time.
I was tempted to turn around when I heard WinWin stumbling around. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, my knee just hurts. I think there's also a scratch on my arm."
"Do you need help?"
"No, I'm done."
I turned around as WinWin tossed his previous outfit into a basket. A smile surfaced on my face as I started to approach him.
"Did you happen to realize that your shirt is on backward?" I gave a short laugh, looking at the word 'Limitless' on his back that should be on the front.
WinWin was blank for a second, then quickly scrunched his nose. "There isn't a tag on this shirt, so it's hard to tell."
His arms disappeared inside of the shirt as he tried to twist it around. I watched his struggling expression with amusement before I reached out to help turn his shirt around and pull his arms through.
"I'm good at caring for you, aren't I?" I asked with a grin.
"You can stop mothering me, Yuta." WinWin brushed at the hair over his forehead and directed his face away from Yuta.
"Let's go find your sister so she can take care of your wounds."
WinWin nodded, letting me put my arm around him as support. Yieun was waiting in the living room with some cotton balls and an antibiotic ointment. She took his other side and set him down on the couch as she kneeled on the floor. I took a knee next to her.
"This might sting a bit," Yieun told WinWin. "Just don't move a bunch."
Her hands slowly wiped his bloody knee with tenderness. She took care in not hurting him and making sure that the wounds will heal nicely. WinWin flinched a the first touch, but stayed still the rest of the time.
"Can you hand me the band aids?" Yieun asked me, pointing to a box sitting on the coffee table.
I nodded as I retrieved them for her. "Remember to be more cautious next time, WinWin," I told him. The only answer I received from him was a sharp exhale.
"Yuta's right. You need to start taking Penny out with you more often. I know you think you're fine without a guide dog when you're with others, but this goes to show you that Penny would be really helpful."
"Whatever."
Yieun stood up, letting out a slow sigh. "Dinner is ready. I'll see you two in the dining room." Yieun turned around and left the room.
WinWin rose to his feet as well and started shuffling his way out as well, leaving me to follow.
