#1. The New Beginning
Life is a roller-coaster of emotions. You can feel a gust of emotions - joy, sorrow, pain, trust, and love, all in one go. It tests you in ways you can't imagine. However, life is a maze and happens in the most unexpected ways. Anamika Bisht believes so.
Anamika is a well-known advocate, working in the Mumbai High Court. She's the owner of a law firm with a good reputation. She's married to Vineet Kumar, who's in the tech business; and they are blessed with a son, Ansh Kumar, who's the apple of their eye.
It's a fine day in the Kumar household. Anamika is in the kitchen, prepping breakfast, of course, with the help of the househelp. Her husband and son are getting ready for the day. She is humming a song and there's a smile on her face. However, there's something going on in her mind, but she didn't let it reflect on her face.
Meanwhile, her son enters the kitchen and hugs her, pecking a kiss on her cheek. He's Ansh, Anamika and Vineet's son, and he's fifteen years old. Anamika smiles; it's Ansh's habit since childhood. Every time he wakes up, leaves for college, or returns home, he gives a tight hug to his mother. His gesture is a testament to his respect for her unconditional love. She pats her son's cheek affectionately.
"What's cooking, Ma?" he asks, placing his chin on his mom's shoulder.
"Poha, along with butter toast," Anamika says, a gentle smile etched across her face.
"Oh, wow! You made it, or Savita kaki did?" he asks, looking at their househelp.
"Aaj tumhari Ma ne hi banaya hai, Ansh beta, mujhe toh kuch karne hi nahi diya," Savita smiles at the boy and pats his cheek.
"Kaki, aapse kaha na aaram kijiye aaj. Main sambhal lungi," Anamika insists, as the old lady had a fever the previous night, and she doesn't want to burden her with work.
Both Anamika and Vineet take Savita as their guardian, for she's elder to them and they consider her family. Upon knowing that the lady is unwell, Anamika took charge of the kitchen. Savita is touched, and at the same time, Ansh keeps his hand on her forehead, his face etched with seriousness.
"Kaaki, ab toh aap ekdum thik ho jayengi, hamara doctor jo aa gaya hai," Anamika jokes, her tone soft.
"Uh, Ma, let me concentrate, aur aap haso mat, main sach mein doctor banunga," Ansh says, his tone irked.
"Ansh baba, doctor toh aap banenge hi, chalo, jao, Ma ko satao mat, aur nashta karo, papa kahan hai tumhare?" Savita asks, gently stroking Ansh's hair.
"Vo ready ho rahe hai, Kaaki, aapko toh pata hai ki unko bahut time lagta hai ready hone mein," Ansh says dramatically, his tone irked.
"Hmm, ye toh samasya hai, lekin tum ye batao, tumne apne papa ko birthday wish kiya ya nahi?" Savita asks, knowing it's Vineet's birthday.
"Kiya tha, kaaki, lekin Dad toh sunte hi nahi, aur subah subah kaam karte hai," Ansh complains to the elderly lady, hoping she'd scold his father.
Meanwhile, Vineet comes out of his room, his phone attached to his ear, and he smiles at the elderly lady. He bends to take her blessings, still busy on call. Savita pats his head and as she turns toward the kitchen, Ansh makes a face.
"Dekha Kaki, papa ne aapse bhi thik se baat nahi ki, I hate it," Ansh complains.
"Ansh, aaj papa ka birthday hai na, come on, take this, unse gussa nahi hote hai," Anamika says, and gives him a tray, covered with another tray.
Ansh carries it to the dining table where Vineet has already taken his seat, and has ended his call too. As soon as his eyes fall on the tray, he gazes at Ansh asking about the content.
"Ma ne nahi bataya, aap wait karo," Ansh says and runs back to his mom.
He helps Anamika in laying the table and then he leads Savita to the dining table. The lady wishes him for his birthday, and Vineet is touched.
"Aapko yaad tha?" he asks, his tone gentle.
"Haan beta, mujhe yaad tha, ab itne saalon se tumhare sath rehti hun, toh mujhe toh pata hi hoga na," she pats his cheek lovingly.
"Haan, aur vo tumhare liye cake bhi banane wali thi, Vineet. Maine mana kiya unhe, kaaki ko fever hai," Anamika tells him, while Savita kaki glares at her.
"Kaaki, aap iss ghar ki member hai, aap hi kehti hain ki Vineet ko itne saalon se aapne sambhala aur phir Ansh ko bhi aapne apni zimmedari samajh kar sambhala, toh ab aapka dhyan rakhna bhi toh hamara farz hai, chaliye, pehle kuch khaiye, fir main aapko dawai deti hun," Anamika commands, and the lady couldn't say a word.
As the lady watches, Anamika uncovers the tray and it turns out to be a sweet vanilla cake, topped with cream and gems. Vineet smiles; it's a perfect start to his day. He cuts the cake and feeds the first piece to his son, Savita kaki, and then Anamika. The old lady is overwhelmed; she's gotten so much love in this family.
"This is a surprise, main toh bhool hi gaya tha ki aaj mera janamdin hai," Vineet chuckles.
"Ansh ko yaad tha, par Ma ne bola tha ki hum aapko surprise denge," Ansh directs his gaze at Anamika.
Vineet reaches out to hold Anamika's hands, "Thanks, Ana, this is the best surprise ever," he says, his tone gentle.
"Aw, this is the least I could do, Vineet," she says, her tone clipped.
"I know, and this is the best. Aaj shaam ko hum bahar jaayenge dinner ke liye," he says and Ansh chuckles at the offer, while Anamika nods.
Soon, after completing the breakfast, Savita kaki insists on cleaning the kitchen, and Anamika grants her wish. Ansh has left for school, and Vineet is getting ready for his office. While tying a knot in his tie, he gazes at Anamika from the mirror.
"Aaj tumhe office nahi jana? Chalo, main chhod deta hoon," he says.
"Nahi, Vineet, mujhe aaj ek case ke liye client se milne jaana hai, toh main chali jaungi. Tum aaramse office jao," she smiles at him and he nods.
Anamika watches him as he finishes tying the knot, and he begins to comb his hair. There's a whirlwind of emotions in her mind, and she needs to talk to him. As she opens her mouth to talk to him, he turns toward her, flashing his gentle smile.
"Vineet, mujhe tumse kuch baat karni hai," she says.
"Anamika, I'm in a rush right now, shaam ko baat karein? We will have ample time," he asks, gesturing toward their dinner treat that night.
"Okay, I can wait," Anamika smiles and he kisses the top of her head and leaves the house.
Anamika watches him leave and once he vanishes from her sight, she walks back into the house. She begins to get ready for the day. As she stands in front of the mirror, she looks at her reflection. She's beautiful in her own way, and she has grown wise as well. However, she feels a void in her life, especially in her married life. She doesn't see the reflection of her former self who was quite excited about her wedding to Vineet. Now, the cards have changed. As she looks into the mirror, she finds her subconscious questioning her.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Is it the right thing? For Vineet? For Ansh?"
"You're taking your decisions in haste, Anamika, please don't do it."
"Take your time, give a second chance and then make the decision."
The subconscious vanishes, leaving Anamika in deep thought. In that moment, she realizes she not only needs to make a decision for herself but she has to seek his decision too. However, she is unaware of how Vineet would react to her points. Well, it's something only the future can tell. And all she needs to do is wait.
