Chapter Four: Mind Your Business
1x05:Broken Mirror
*Trigger warning*
College Party
"Bye!" The blonde woman yelled drunkenly stepping down the stairs of the chaotic college party. Rap music blaring. Through the small house. Red fairy lights wrapped around the front of the house. Jocks, and drunk party goers, swaying to the music outside and inside of the house as well. Not a care in the world.
" You know, I really--"
"No, no, no. Do not start with the "I love you's." She sasses elbowing her boyfriend in the ribs playfully.
"I do."
"You only say it when you're drunk."
"That's not true."
"Oh, ok. I'm driving." She demands hand outstretched for the keys.
"I'm not drunk. I'm just buzzed a little bit."
"Buzzed a little bit is something that drunk people say to convince themselves that they're not drunk." She retorts as he scoffs and laughs.
"Yeah. No, no, no, no, no. Touch your fingers to your nose."
"What?"
" Do it."
"All right, come here." He exclaims grabbing her wrist softly and touching her fingers to his nose.
"Your fingers. Walk a straight line." She demands with a slight smirk. He laughs
"Ohh! All right." He does as he's told and kisses the blonde making her smile and shove him away playfully of course.
"Ok, you can drive."
"All right. Thank you very much." He cheers walking to the car.
"Slowly though, no speeding." She says as they both walk to his car and climb in driving off.
//
" Hey."
"Eyes on the road, Casanova."
"Just tell me you love me."
" I do love you."
"Good" Jordan replies pleased with the blonde's answer.
"Now get your eyes on the road--Jordan!" She shrieks as Jordan's mustang is about to collide with the truck on the road. His tires screech and he comes to a halt. Both of the young adults panting.
"Are you ok?"
" Yeah."
"What the hell is he doing just sitting in the middle of the road?" Jordan snaps angry at the car now. He turns off his vehicle and the two proceed to get out.
" Maybe he had a breakdown and he couldn't move it." Trish says as they both approach the vehicle. Jordan looks inside the windows while Trish stands a few feet away.
"Jordan? Jordan We should go. We could just turn around and go back the way we came."
"Why didn't they just pull it off the side of the road" Jordan mutters lost in his train of thought.
"Jordan? Jordan, can we please just go? Come on." She shutters nervously. The two climb back into Jordan's vehicle.
"Do you have the keys?"
"No, didn't you leave them in the car?"
" Yeah, I think. I don't know."
"They have to be here somewhere." Trish sighs as her boyfriend's incompetence before searching for the keys frantically. The silence being filled by a gun cocking in the backseat
"Trish?" The muzzle flash of a gun and a shrill scream leave the air
//
Reid and Derek were walking down the hall towards the bullpen.
"So what happened with you and Eden at the Redskins game?"
" Top secret." Reid smiles trying to juggle all the folders in his arms.
" Derek, hey. I put the transcript from the last prison interview on your desk." Angie, another Agent walks by.
" Ok. It wasn't classified rush. You could have sent it to the interoffice."
" I could have." She smirks winking before walking off.
They watch a few agents walking by waves at Morgan giggling like school girls.
" Must be tough, man."
" Not really." He replies with a sly smirk.
" What do you mean?" Reid asks as they enter the Bullpen. " You don't do anything and these women are throwing themselves at you."
" Strictly off-limits, Reid."
" There's no code of conduct that says agents can't socialize." Reid shrugs.
" Well, see, my code of survival says never mess with a woman who carries a gun. Derek replies patting him on the shoulder he goes to his desk as Eden smiles at Reid,
"Morning Spence." She ruffles his hair as he smiles. Her and Elle walked past him and up to Hotch's office tapping a light knock on the open door. He gave them a one minute signal and turned his attention back to his phone call.
Eden didn't want to be here on this day, In fact she would rather be anywhere on this day, but work was something she did to take her mind off of everything she had been through. Besides she wouldn't be able to stay home by herself, she would need company, her house would be too quiet.
"So it sounds like the best rest isn't turning out to be very restful.....Well you just try to relax and get a little rest okay. Bye." He says hanging up the phone.
"Everything okay?" Elle asks.
"Yeah the doctors are worried about Hailey's blood sugar level, they are worried about preeclampsia and I'm worried she's not gonna last six weeks in bed."
"She wants out of the hospital?" Eden questions.
"Yeah. Is it here?"
"Yeah" Elle mumbled, nodding as three of them exited his office. Hotch in front.
"Reid. Morgan. Documents up on the screen regarding Trish Davenport."
"Have you read them yet?" Reid asked, as he and Morgan walked up the stairs.
"Yeah I got a copy of this from the Document examiner."
"What's it say?" Morgan lilts walking behind the group.
"That we've got until eight o'clock tonight." They enter the round table room.
"You will follow the instructions carefully. You will do this to ensure the safety of your daughter. You will wait for the call. You will answer the call at 8:00 P.M.You will write down the instructions and follow them to the letter." Spencer reads the document on the screen.
" That gives us less than nine hours to get to Connecticut, work up victimology on Trish Davenport and prepare her father for the ransom drop."
"How do we know the letter's real?" Gideon asks.
" The handwriting is a match for Trish's. He dictated it to her, and they found saline on the paper."
"Her tears." Gideon says with a sigh.
"He never says I. He doesn't say I will call. He says, you will answer the call. He's distancing himself from the kidnapping. If he said I he'd be taking responsibility for it."
"There's also another missing element." Hotch leers.
"No mention of the police. Ransom notes almost always forbid police involvement." Eden mutters, arms folded over her chest as they look at the note on the screen in front of them
"So is he expecting law enforcement to get involved?"
" Well, if he's expecting us, let's not disappoint him." Gideon says as everyone nods.
Euripides said "when a good man is hurt all who would be called good must suffer with him.
" Everyone familiar with the father?" Hotch asks.
"Evan Davenport, U.S.Attorney, executive assistant southern district, New York. Widower assigned U.S.Marshals three times in the past ten years due to death threats."
"Is the protective detail still current?" Derek asks.
"Around the clock, but Trish declined protection when she turned 18."
"Too bad for the boyfriend." Derek mumbles flipping through the file
"But why kill him?" Pretty boy questions.
"Well, if I'm gonna kidnap someone I know I have to take out whoever's with them."
"It says here she's got a sister." Elle speaks up
"Cheryl."
"Any problems? Were they close?"
" Yeah. They're identical twins." Reid says holding up a photo of the two sisters.
"Okay, Reid Gideon and I will head to the Davenport's Greenway, Morgan, and Hunters head to the crime Scene. Take a look around to see if locals missed anything. "
Eden was annoyed she had to be paired with Derek again, she was starting to think that Hotch was doing it on purpose. They pull up to the crime scene and get out. Seeing a few Marshalls outside of their car watching over Cheryl.
"What's she doing?" Derek asks.
"Lying on the road."
"Yeah, I see that. But why?"
"She's trying to get a feel for what happened to her sister." The female Marshall snips perking up when she sees Morgan.
Eden rolls her eyes already annoyed with the woman.
"By lying on the ground?" Morgan questions as Elle looks around the crime scene with a file in her hands and Eden approaches Cheryl
"The girl spent her teenage years perfecting ways to ditch her bodyguards. We're just happy she's in our line of sight."
"Cheryl Davenport?" Elle says as Derek looks to the group he points to Cheryl as Elle just shakes her head.
"Shh! Just a minute. No, I'm not crazy. I'm lying here for a reason." She explains Eden pulls off her jacket and lays it down deciding to lay down next to Cheryl.
Cheryl looks at Eden. "I feel connected to her better, you know like I can feel her."
Eden nods. "My sister and I were like that"
"Really?" Cheryl says as Eden nods.
"It was like, I could tell when she was sad, I'd call her or go see her and it was just this feeling I got, that she needed me and somehow I was just there." Cheryl looks up at the sky now as does Eden trying to get a feel or what Cheryl was feeling.
"What are you doing Red?" Derek stands over Eden's view blocking the sunlight from her eyes.
She simply silences him and waves her hand in the air. Cheryl closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before sitting up. Eden follows suit, stands up and helps her dust herself off.
She picks up her jacket and shakes it out before putting it back on.
"He dragged her from the car. This is where she fell." Cheryl points to the ground. "Trish is a fighter. She wouldn't have gone quietly, not even with a gun pointed at her." She explains.
"She's right. There are nail marks on the car seat." Elle closes the file in her hands.
"So you believe your sister's still alive?"
"I know she's still alive." Cheryl nods.
"You know the way twins know." Elle nods her head trying to figure out Cheryl
"Not that I can feel my twin's pain crap. If you stick her with a needle, I don't cry out.But if something is bothering her, if something is wrong I can feel it. Even from 1,000 miles away at college."
"You study physics, right?" Elle nods to Cheryl.
" If you're asking why a science major would believe in something non-scientific, I don't. I just know what I feel." Cheryl turns to Eden. "You said, you felt this with your sister too right?"
Elle looks at Eden now who sees Derek perk up. She just sighs. "Yeah. Your brain sends different signals to your body when you feel things. Like sadness of emotion or happiness. With a twin it's different. You're connected by DNA so no you can't feel when they hurt. But since your DNA is the same you. Sometimes you can feel their emotions. Pick up on their energies. It's the same with siblings sometimes too," Eden just looks at the face Elle makes before clearing her throat. "It's hard to explain but just know I don't think you're crazy."
"My feeling is that my sister is still alive."
"Then she is." Eden replies simply, Cheryl nods to the strawberry blonde.
Eden was paired with Derek, Elle wanted to talk with Cheryl alone. Derek and Eden were roleplaying. He took a deep breath as they looked through the brush of leaves and dirt. Closing his eyes.
"Ok. She was rarely without the boyfriend." He says as Eden nods. "Well, I know in order to get to her, I have to take him out. He was collateral damage. Or was he? Shot was to the face. That's personal."
"Kill the boyfriend, get him out of the way so I can get her alone." Eden says as Derek nods he looks at Eden, then back at Elle and Cheryl before deciding to head back to the Davenport residence.
//
At the house Morgan Elle and Eden stood in the kitchen.
"You think Cheryl's a whack job because she claims she can feel her sister's anxiety?"
" I never said whack job."
"You didn't have to, it was written all over your face." Eden sasses, Derek rolls his eyes at her as she is leaning up against the counter Reid walks in with his hands in his pocket.
"Actually there may be a physiological basis for it." Reid says
"Don't ask."
"Reversed asymmetry monozygotic eggs split late between nine to twelve days. The DNA matches right down to the very last stranded code and there's sporadic documentation of shared physiological pain."
"And you believe it?" Derek mocks Reid.
" No, I'm just saying it's possible. I don't know everything. I mean, despite the fact that you think that I do." Reid babbles as Eden choke on her water and laughs.
"I never said that. When have I ever said that?"
" Every day since I met you." Reid says.
"Um This morning during Breakfast"
"Yesterday when he beat you at cards.Um we've got one minute." Hotch says as we all follow him.
"Anybody ever heard of sarcasm?" Derek quips as Eden rolls her eyes.
"You are just as hot as you think."
"Is that so?" Derek wiggles his brows
"No, that's sarcasm." Eden says, patting him on the shoulder as Elle and Reid laugh.
They walked into the dining room and Eden stood next to Cheryl. Leaning against the banister.
"Remember to keep your voice even and calm and agree with everything he says."
"He's late." Mr. Davenport panics
"He'll call. Just try to relax. This is his strategy. He wants you on edge."
The phone begins to ring
"Remember to repeat any important information he gives you to make sure you understand. You try to keep him talking to reveal something about Trish or about himself." Gideon explains
Mr. Davenport presses the talk button. "This is Evan Davenport."
"Hello, Mr. Davenport."
"Are you the man who has my daughter Patricia?"
" I have your daughter."
"Can I ask you--"
"- You may ask me nothing. This is not an interrogatory. You will only listen to my instructions."
"Ok."
"But I will not give them to you."
"- I don't understand."
" I do not want to talk to you, Mr. Davenport."
"Excuse me."
"I want to talk to her. I want to talk to Cheryl."
"What's he doing?" Mr.Davenport asks he mutes the call.
" What most of the offenders we catch try to establish dominance."
"How long can we keep him on hold?" Elle questions.
" We can't put her on."
"Why not? I want to help. I'll talk to him."
"Cheryl doesn't have the authority that Davenport holds. He shouldn't want to talk to her." Derek says firmly.
"I think that she should speak to him." Eden replies.
"Do I need to repeat myself? I want to talk to Cheryl. Put her on the phone.Now."
"No." Gideon says.
"I think she should speak to him. He wants to talk to her. The more he speaks, the more he reveals." Eden explains leaning against the wall. Elle nods her head In agreement.
"She is right, Gideon."
"He has my sister." Cheryl says.
"No." He says sternly.
"I'm waiting."
"Elle." He suggests as she nods, walking over to the phone he presses the talk button.
"This is Cheryl. Hello. This is Cheryl."
"I have Patricia by my side. I know her voice therefore I know her sister's. Get off the phone. I want Cheryl. I'll give you 60 seconds. If you don't put her on the phone I will hang up and you will never hear from me or Patricia again."
"Prep her. Come on over here, please." Gideon says muting the phone.
"This guy's arrogant." Elle says as Eden takes a seat next to the phone this time. Cheryl coming over and taking a seat.
"Let him know that he's in control. Let him guide the conversation. Use your sister's name. Say my sister Trish or her name's Patricia." Elle explains as Eden nods.
"Talk about her.Let him get to know her through you. Don't veer off topic. Got it. Agree with him. Tell him that you understand him and as hard as this sounds, empathize. Let him know that he didn't mean to hurt Trish or go this far and that he can fix it. He has a chance to show that he's a kind and forgiving person by letting your sister go. And if you don't know what to say, I'll tell you." Eden coaches and nods to her and she nods back. She hits the talk button on the phone again.
"This is Cheryl."
"Hello, Cheryl. How are you?"
"I'd be a lot better if I knew that my sister Patricia's ok."
"I can tell you have a lot of empathy, Cheryl. You care about others." He says as Eden could feel a shiver go down her spine."Yes, I do."
"And it sounds like you understand." She says as I nodded reassuringly
"You mean that I empathize?"
" Yes."
"I do. Very much.I empathize. I empathize with you, Cheryl. I know you want to be with your sister." Creepy voice says
Eden jotted down words on the notepad to Cheryl. She turns to her and points to it, the notepad reads. "You want Your sister back."
"Yes, I want Trish back."
"Good. Tell me what you want, Cheryl. I'm very interested. Tell me all about yourself. What's your favorite color?"
Elle presses the mute button. " Don't answer that. Stay with Trish."
"If I tell you, will you let me talk to my sister?"
" Maybe. Maybe not."
"I like blue."
"How ordinary. Do you like chocolate, Cheryl? Do You Like Chocolate?"
" Yes."
"I do as well."
"Please, let me talk to my sister. All I want to do is hear her voice. Please."
"Hello?"
" Trish!"
" Cher, is that you?"
"Trish, it's me. I'm here. Are you ok?"
"Cher, I can't--"
" Where are you? What do you see?"
" I-I see the moon."
"Trish!"
" Have 500,000 ready."
"Let me talk to her!" Cheryl yells.
"$500,000 is what I'm owed. The Davenports will wait by the phone. You will receive a call with precise instructions in exactly 15 minutes." Creepy voice says before hanging up leaving a distraught Cheryl in silence. She humphs then runs off.
"Were you able to trace it?"
" No. He's probably using a disposable cell phone. They're impossible to trace." Reid replies, taking off his headphones.
"She said she could see the moon. She sounded delirious." Gideon says as Eden nods.
"She was sedated. Could have been a light."
"That's not light sedation. With the right dosage you could remember where you are and who you are. He used a lot more than a little. " Eden says as everyone looks at her with furrowed brows. She clears her throat and straightens up her chair.
"If he's keeping her drugged, it might mean he's not very strong. He might have to keep her weak just so he can dominate her."
"Or he's keeping her quiet." Elle suggests.
"Has Davenport told us everything about his staff?"
"Oh, yeah, we have detailed reports but we should probably revisit background on household staff aides and current docket." Hotch explains as Gideon nods.
"Guys, she wasn't blindfolded."
"No." Gideon replies.
"If she sees his face, as soon as he gets that money..."
" he'll kill her." Eden sighs, running a hand over her face.
//
"He said owed."
"$500,000. His demand sounded scripted, like he was reading it to us. $500,000 is what I'm owed." Reid explains as Derek nods.
"But the rest of the conversation wasn't. He was most relaxed just talking to Cheryl."
" What does that mean?" Gideon asked.
"It means he likes her. Trust her. He's completely himself around her." Edens says with a sigh as Reid looks at her and rubs her shoulder.
" Maybe he already knew her." Elle suggest
" How much time do we have?"
"Six minutes." Reid replies in a monotone voice.
" How quickly can you get the money?" Gideon asked Mr. Davenport. Who licks his lips. Eden walks into the kitchen to find Cheryl pouring a big glass of wine and she takes it from her hands. Places it on the opposite side of the kitchen as she sighs.
" Look, I know I shouldn't drink, but under the circumstances you'd think you could let this one slide."
"He's gonna call back. We need you at your best."
"Have you had many cases like this?"
" I've seen my share of abductions." Eden leans back against the counter.
"I don't know how you do it, this job. How do you stomach it?"
"You wanna know a secret?" Eden asks as she nods.
"I used to be a surgeon, I was the best surgeon, I mean besides my sister of course."
"So what happened?"
"That's another story for a different day. But the way I stomach it isn't the way you should...My advice to you? Trust your instincts. Don't let your guard down and fight like hell for anything and everything you want. Even family. Trish is alive. You've trusted your feelings this far. Hold onto that." Eden replies as she gives her a small smile, they head back into the dining room and wait for the call. The shrill ringing of the phone makes Cheryl jump.
"Everything will be done by Cheryl. Cheryl will gather the money packets. Only she will touch the money.Cheryl will make the drop. If she is wired, if you use a look-a-like, Patricia dies. Cheryl will get in her car. No one is to be in the car with her, no one is to follow her, no air surveillance, no car surveillance of any kind will be tolerated. I will give directions over a cell phone as Cheryl drives. She must make the drop at exactly 3:00 A.M.She will follow each instruction to the letter."
"We can't let her go alone " Hotch mutters.
"He said if he sees anyone--"
"I know. One car, unmarked. Tinted windows.
"If he sees one of you, and Trish dies-- if my daughter dies" Mr. Davenport threatens as Hotch gives Morgan and Eden a look. Before long Eden was gearing up when Hotch walked in. Helping her fasten her bullet proof vest.
"I'm not a child, you don't have to babysit me."
"I know that, I just want to make sure that you can do this, that you can handle this case and with Morgan without bickering." Eden looks at Hotch. "I need your head clear."
She nods. "Okay I will play nice to Morgan for the sake of the case."
"Thankyou, and Eden,"
"Yes."
"I am sure Mark would be very proud of you regardless of whatever profession you'd be doing right now."
"You didn't even know him."
"Yes, but he loved you and from what you've told me I am sure he would've wanted you to spend his birthday Helping people." Hotch turns to leave and Eden sighs.
"Hotch?" He turns and stares at her with that dark gaze and stoic demeanor.
"Thanks for not telling anyone."
He nods before leaving the room and Eden sighs, maybe Hotch was right in a sense, regardless of if she was still being a surgeon after Mark was gone and the job she actually chose to do. Mark is smiling down on her, happy that she isn't beating herself up, that she isn't blaming herself. She grabs her jacket and getting into the car with Morgan, and Hotch, Reid was on speaker.
" Cheryl's car has GPS. We'll be able to track her."
"Doc, the first thing he's gonna do is have her switch cars. Where are we headed?"
"Let's see. An address which appears to be a rental car lot." Reid says in a down tone. Eden smirks.
The trio drive to the car rental lot and wait.
"You know my guess? One of these cars has a set of keys in the ignition with a disposable cell phone sitting right in it."
"So she switches cars and phones?" Eden quipps from the backseat.
"Mhm."Derek hums
"He's probably gonna have her drive around for over an hour just to make sure no one's following her."
"And then the ransom drop." Hotch says as Eden nods and humph. They watch Cheryl get out of the car and stand there waiting in the dark.
"What is it? What's the matter?" The Stoic leader questions turning in his seat to look back at Eden, she was biting her thumb nail while she was thinking.
" Something's not right about this. What if he was watching us or listening to us?"
"I agree" Morgan says.
"The local office did a bug sweep."
"Come on, you heard that ransom call. It was way too simple." Eden replies as Hotch sighs, shaking his head. "You said you needed my head clear, It's clear I am focused and from my opinion there is something in my gut that says this isn't right."
"All right You're the unsub. What would you have done differently?"
" I would have said don't involve the police or the media. $500,000. No consecutive serial numbers on the bills. No marked bills. No new bills--"
"No tracking devices in the money bag. No explosive dyes in the money bag. No tracking devices in the car." Morgan interrupts and Eden refrains from smacking him in the back of the head.
"Why didn't he say any of this?" Hotch questions as the strawberry blonde sighs watching Cheryl stand outside. She begins to think for a moment, a light bulb going off in her head.
" Son of a bitch Hotch, this was never about the money." Eden doesn't wait; she gets out of the car ignoring Hotch and Morgan calling her name.
"It's not a ransom drop."
"It's a second kidnapping." Hotch and Morgan piece together what Eden was saying but by then she was already of the car running towards Cheryl and tackle her down
"Cheryl, get down, get down!" Hotch yells
"Don't move!" Morgan yells shooting at a black car who's tires were screeching. Cheryl and Eden look up at the car then at each other before she helps her up. Morgan comes running up to the two blondes nostrils flared.
"Everyone, okay?" Hotch asks as Cheryl was panting.
"Yeah everyone's good."
They all head back to the Davenport residence as Hotch calls Gideon beforehand to explain what happened.
"Cheryl's all right." Derek says as Eden helps Cheryl into her house. Her dad snatched her from Eden's grasp.
"Hey. Hi, Hotch." Elle says as they all stay silent the phone begins ringing again and Derek presses answer.
"That was fun, wasn't it? A little running around, getting our pulses racing. Are you there, Cheryl? Are you there?! Tell me you didn't feel a slight tingle, a thrill run up your spine. Huh? But those clever and cunning FBI agents deduced my little plan just in time. They figured it out. If they hadn't, I would have had you both. The whole set. The matching pair." He says Derek puts a finger to keep Cheryl from talking.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because you asked me to, Cheryl. You asked me with your glances. The way you talk. Those little gestures." He says as Derek mutes the call.
"What are you doing?"
"Do not answer this man."
"You asked for this! You asked for it, Cheryl! Cheryl!"
Cheryl starts panting angrily and presses the button even after Derek tells her not too.
"What do you want?"
"- What do I want?! You! It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow but I promise you, we will be together." He snaps hanging up the phone as Cheryl shakes her head and sits down.
Reid and Gideon were talking to Cheryl and her dad while Eden was in the kitchen. Pacing back and forth trying to piece everything together. Derek walks in.
"You know I overheard your little secret conversation with Cheryl. Care to share Red?"
"I don't share personal information with colleagues Morgan."
"Oh that's what we are colleagues? You don't consider me as a friend?"
"I don't have friends it's a lot easier for me to not get emotionally attached Okay ? Great chat." Eden says, rolling her eyes. Derek was tossing an apple up and down in the air. She takes it while it is mid air and takes a bite. He opened his mouth and then closed it just as Hotch and the others walked in.
"Crime of obsession. Your specialty, your lead, Morgan and Eden. " Hotch says as Morgan sighs
"I think we should recheck everyone on Davenport's staff against the profile of a stalker."
"Aren't stalking behaviors pretty diverse?" Elle asked
" There's overlap. Narcissistic, inflated sense of self-worth, history of bad relationships." Eden explains
"What do we know so far?"
"He's probably white, obviously male sophisticated speech patterns."
"Sophisticated, yet bizarre. He rarely uses contractions. It's not "you're," it's "you are." Gideon corrects as Eden smirks and continues biting into Morgan's apple. He walks over eating an Orange and hands a piece to Eden who takes it as he simply just smiles and hands a piece to Hotch and Elle.
"This guy's pretentious. He wants to sound smarter than he actually is.Whatever position of authority or level of success this guy has he had to struggle for it. Eden continues.
"We also have to face the possibility at this point--"
"That Trish may already be dead." Elle finished for Hotch.
"You know, so far he's called every play. I say we apply some pressure, make him sweat." Derek says as Eden nods.
"Well, there's only one way to do that." Gideon says walking off. Eden smirks and hands Derek back his apple, wiping her mouth and patting his cheek. Before walking off as well.
The shrill familiar sound of the phone ringing brings everyone to their feet. Well everyone except for the team after a few moments of it ringing. Mr. Davenport goes to reach for it.
"Hold on, hold on, hold on." Gideon says as he lets the phone ring for a little longer. All of them are standing around this time. He answers then quickly hangs up.
"What are you doing?" Mr. Davenport asks as the phone rings again moments later.
"Agent Gideon?"
"Hello?"
" Tell me there was a technical issue with the line because if you actually just hung up on m--" Gideon hangs up the phone again and it rings again
"What the hell are you doing?"
"Are you gonna answer it?"
" Why is he doing this? What is he--what-- you're gonna drive this guy crazy."
"Cheryl!" Elle yells trying to hold her back
"Somebody has to answer the phone!"
" Just answer the phone, for god's sake! - Pick up the phone--" Mr. Davenport yells, reaching for the phone. Morgan holds him back.
"Don't touch it! He knows what he's doing."
"Davenport residence." Gideon answers
"Are you out of your mind? You do realize, you do understand, that I'll kill her?! Do you--" he hangs up again
"You're killing my daughter! Pick up that phone!"
" Get him quiet. Get him quiet."
"I-- Mr. Davenport, get a hold of yourself."
"Answer the phone!"
" Quiet him!" Gideon says as the phone rings again. Cheryl and Mr. Davenport both sobbing.
"She is dead! You hang up on me again, and I rip her open!"
" I'm sorry. You must have the wrong number."
"Come on, Gideon." Derek replies as Everyone is eeractic.
"You killed her."
"No, sir." Gideon replies.
"Oh, yeah. Then what--what the hell do you think you're doing?"
" I'm saving your daughter, Mr. Davenport. Have a little faith." he says as the phone rings again he waits til the fifth ring to answer.
"Put Cheryl on the phone."
"No. You're finished talking to Cheryl. Listen to that tone of authority. Just like your published work, agent Gideon. Fascinating to hear the same arrogant quality in your own voice. You are a bit of a pedant, Jason, a bit didactic?" He snaps at Gideon As Reid puts on headphones to listen closer.
"Well, that's a very interesting conclusion. You sound intelligent, and you certainly sound educated, and we both know that's not true."
"Oh, I know all about all of you. The ambitious agent Hotchner? Do you want to be director of the FBI someday, agent Hotchner? Would you step on Jason Gideon to get there? I think you would.Posttraumatic stress is a very good excuse. Even your sick, pregnant wife can't get you to leave your post. Jason Gideon, an expert in the criminal psyche yet unable to diagnose the autistic leanings of the very insecure Dr.Reid. Well, maybe he can make money counting cards in Las Vegas. The lovely Elle was promoted too soon. She doesn't have what it takes to make it in the B.A.U.Boys club. You're no threat to me, you're no threat to anyone. Token Derek Morgan wants to be taken seriously but he is just a pumped-up side of beef. The indubious Hunters the skillful surgeon. Are you still afraid of planes? I mean if my Lover and my sister died from a plane crash that had me and all my colleagues stranded in the woods for six days I'd go a bit insane. How are your colleagues at Seattle grace oh I'm sorry my mistake Grey-Sloan memorial. I know who you are, I know how you think and I know what to do next! Do you?" The unsub snaps hanging up the phone.
Gideon sits back in his chair, everyone silent trying to process what just happened. Eden tried not to let it show. She missed him, every fiber in her being missed him. She missed his touch and his scent. No one here but Hotch knew about that damn plane crash about Mark and Eden was so careful not to let it slip up in conversation. Now how the hell was she supposed to explain this?
" What the hell was that?" Gideon asked.
"Why did he say that he knows what to do next? Is he gonna hurt my daughter?"
" He was grandstanding." Eden replies in a hushed tone.
"You don't know that. You--you can't possibly know that." He says standing up to come at Eden and Gideon, Eden was just standing next to Gideon, he was most likely coming at Gideon. Morgan jumps up quickly and holds him back.
"Mr.Davenport, I have learned more in the last 5 minutes than in the last 24 hours." Gideon responds.
"Oh, really? Well, I don't understand. Why is he focused on you right now?"
"Because we are interfering in his relationship with the girls." Derek explains.
"He said he knows all about you."
"Yes, apparently." Gideon says.
"He profiled us, Mr. Davenport."
"Why would he do that?" Cheryl asks.
"To show us how smart he is."
".Often times the best profilers are the unsubs themselves. They're the ones able to walk into an arcade full of children and pinpoint the boy or girl that can be led out quietly." Reid explains
"But he made a mistake, because he gave us something he didn't expect." Eden mutters with a sly smirk to Gideon.
"Which is?"
" He told us how to find him." Gideon explains
"You said you knew how to find him, that you were gonna save my daughter. Why don't you get out there and do something? What are you--everybody's standing around here, looking--"
" Mr.Davenport--" Gideon begins.
" - Don't condescend to me. Don't patronize me." He puts his finger in Gideon's face,
"Evan, evan. Evan.Everybody is doing the best that they can.Come on.Come on.Take a break, come on." His security guard says pulling him away from Gideon.
"For the suspect to know that much about us he has to be one of us." Derek speaks up.
"I'm gonna have Garcia do a search of the New Haven FBI field office. The guy we're looking for knows this house, he knows the family."
"There's 700 agents in New Haven and another 70 in satellite offices. Davenport knows quite a few of them." Reid explains.
"While we're narrowing the list, Cheryl can't stay here.If he's one of us, he has access, weapons and you bet he's got a strategy." Elle list off as Eden nods.
"So who can we trust?" Derek ask
"No one. We need to get Cheryl to a safe house."
And limit the amount of agents she comes in contact with." Gideon says as Hotch assigns Derek Elle and Eden to go with Cheryl to the safe house. Elle and Cheryl in one car. Derek, the security team and Eden are in the other. Even though the drive was silent Eden could tell Derek had so much to say.
Elle leads Cheryl to a comfortable spot while Eden stands watch with Morgan.
"We're in.We'll walk the perimeter." Berry from Davenport's security team says walking away.
Eden paced the place and sighed going into the kitchen while Morgan was splashing water on his face. Eden hopped on the counter.
"Plane crash?" He says wiping his face with a paper towel.
"I don't want to talk about Derek."
"You know Red? You keep bottling up all those emotions and one day you're going to snap. You're going to go crazy and let out every emotion you've ever felt all at once. " He says sitting next to her she sighs and shakes her head.
"What would you like to know? Maybe how I had to listen to my sister's body getting eaten by wild animals. Or how my best friend Derek's hand was bleeding so bad that we were worried that he may never use it again. No wait I got it, the bugs" Eden nods. "The bugs I had to pick out my friend Arizona's leg which was decaying by day three. Maybe how I was contemplating eating all of my friends. People I called family right there at that moment without any hesitation. Huh? Is that what you wanted to hear?" Eden snaps jumping down from the counter and walking away. She went to check on Elle who was on the phone. She gave a look that indicated something was wrong and nodded upstairs Eden took off up the stairs like a bat out of hell to check on Cheryl. She burst into the room to find Agent Scyher holding a knife to Cheryl's throat.
"Put the knife down." Eden has her gun aimed at his back he turned around, knife still in his hands.
"You don't understand. You don't understand my relationship with these girls."
"- Put the knife down." She continues not wanting to deal with him.
"- You don't understand--"
"- I said put it down!" she yells Sternly as he hangs his head low before shoving her into the wall and slapping her gun out of her hands. She kicks him in the balls and swipes his feet from under him while taking his gun from his holster off his hip and aiming it at him.
" You ok?" she looks at Cheryl who nods.
"Where is Patricia?" she asks as he just pants hands up in defense. She holds the gun at his crotch as he breathing becomes heavy. "Don't make me ask again." she seethes, staring him directly in his eyes. He pants a few more times before mumbling her location and she tosses her phone to Cheryl telling her to press the number four for Gideon and to tell him where Patrica was before picking him off the ground and taking him downstairs seeing Elle comforting Morgan. She rolled my eyes and led him out the door.
They drive Cheryl to the location of where her sister was; she meets up with the rest of the team and before long Patrica is loaded up into an ambulance with her family and for a split second Eden feels like everything would be okay. That somehow Mark had a hand in this and she can't help but smile.

Eden walked into the bullpen to see a Semi-shirtless Derek who was wincing and addressing his wound. A first aid kit opened on his desk. She sighs, walking over to him and inspecting it, he is irritated that the unsub got the drop on him. She dabs a bit of alcohol on it and he winces again.
"You gonna be alright?" She stands up now as Morgan takes a seat in his chair.
"Yeah, I know I did. So what?"
" So no one expects you to finish the Davenport file tonight." Eden says, sitting on the edge of his desk.
"Yeah, well, I guess it's still a little fresh on my mind. Nothing like 50,000 volts in your back to keep your motor running, right?" Derek sasses trying to lighten the mood. He leans back in his chair. "You know, Red?, I remember you saying we are just colleagues so what does this have to do with you?"
She sighs and adjusts herself on his desk. "When I boarded that plane. I was a surgeon on the way to do a surgeon that I knew like the back of my hand. I was surrounded by people I love and my boyfriend at the time proposed to me. So life was good. But when I woke up in the woods, Without a clue as to how I got there. I was scared, hell I thought I was dead. But after a few seconds of coming to terms with it. I saved all my friends and my fiance. I kept thinking before we knew it we would be out of these woods and back into our regular life. Working on patients and doing the impossible. I was so wrong. My sister died right there and after being rescued my fiance soon died in the very hospital we worked at. At that moment. I didn't want to be a surgeon anymore. I didn't want to constantly see their faces everywhere I went or be reminded of them." She blinks back the tears. "Today was his. He would be 40."
"So what did you do?" He asks and Eden sighs, she didn't want to tell him frankly she would rather be home. But Hotch's voice kept echoing in her head, and Maybe it was the fact that it was Mark's birthday but she was feeling generous.
"The day of the funeral I left. I packed up everything I owned and left. I didn't tell anyone where I was going or if I'd be back. I just left. It was what my mother did when things got scary to handle. She would pick up and leave dragging my sister along the way with her. Eventually I told my friends where I was and how I was doing. I told them where I was working." she sighs looking up at him.
"Why didn't you say anything Red?"
"Because Derek the minute I get attached to people is the minute I lose them and I didn't want to lose this."
"You know, Shyer didn't see you as a peer or a threat. That was his mistake." He says as Eden laughs.
"Yes, it was. You're gonna be here all night. Give me half." She stands up hand stretched out for some of the files.
"Ok. Be careful what you wish for. Knock yourself out." He says handing her some of the files. She counts them and puts one back and he chuckles while she goes back to her desk.
It was in that moment that Derek saw Eden for who she was and he vowed to never stop pestering her. To continue getting her out of that stoic shell she held near and dear to her heart. Even if it may get him hurt in the end. Because even love is worth fighting for.
