Chapter twenty-eight
♤
Daryl and Glenn burst through the door causing us to all jump to our feet. "Rick and Shane ain't back?"
Lori shook her head, "We heard a shot?"
"Maybe they found Randall?" Lori suggested.
"We found him," Daryl said,
We looked at them, "Is he back in the shed?"
Daryl shook his head, "He was a walker"
"Did you find the walker that bit him?" Hershel asked as I held Charlie into my side.
Glenn looked at us all nervously, "Weird thing is, he wasn't bit.."
"His neck was broke--" Daryl began explaining,
I looked at the pair, "So he fought back?"
"Thing is, Shane and Randall's tracks were right on top of each other, and Shane ain't no tracker so he didn't come up behind him, they were together" Daryl continued to explain.
Lori rushed forward, everyone clearly confused and worried, "Can you please go back out there and find Rick and Shane and figure out what on earth is going on"
Daryl nodded, "You got it"
Everyone let out a small sigh. I followed Daryl out in hopes of speaking to him until we heard faint groans in the distance. We all squinted and watched as a horde of walkers approached. "Patricia, kill the lights" Hershel whispered.
"I'll go get the guns" Maggie muttered before running off into the house.
Glenn panted, "Maybe they'll pass like the herd on the highway, should we just go inside and wait it out?"
"Not unless there's a tunnel downstairs I don't know about" Daryl remarked, "A herd that size will rip the house apart"
We stood watching for a few more seconds, Daryl nudged me, handing me a small handgun as Lori ran out onto the porch, "Carl's gone, he was upstairs but he's not there, I can't find him!"
"Maybe he's hiding" Glenn suggested causing Lori to look at him with sharp eyes.
"He was supposed to be upstairs, I'm not leaving without my boy!"
Carol quickly comforted her, "We're not, we're not. We'll find him, we're gonna look again!"
Patricia quickly handed out the guns, Hershel, Maggie and Glenn taking them. "We ain't got the numbers, it's no use"
"You can go if you want" Hershel said as he loaded his gun.
Daryl raised his brow, "You gonna take em all on?"
"We have guns, we have cars. Kill as many as we can then use the cars to lead the rest off the farm" Hershel explained, his plan clearly thought out.
Daryl looked around at us all as we loaded our weapons, "You serious?"
"This is my farm, I'll die here"
We all looked around a few seconds before Daryl nodded, leaping over the fence, "All right, it's as good a night as any"
Looking at Hershel, I nodded, "I'm with you" He nodded. I ran into the house to Charlie.
"You stay behind me, okay? Get your rucksack and stay behind me! Quick!" I yelled as the roars of the cars began circling the farm, gunshots firing.
Everyone in the house were packing as much as they could as quickly as they could.
I stood beside Hershel as we watched, the barn now up in flames as Charlie joined me, staying close behind.
Gunshots continued to ring around the farm as we watched the cars continue to circle the farm.
The fire in the barn was attracting some but others were still heading to the house and I knew it was only a matter of time before the farm was completely over run, along with the house.
Suddenly, Hershel and I began firing, "Charlie, go with Carol and Lori!" I yelled as more and more walkers headed towards us and I realised that I wouldn't be able to protect him much longer.
"Carol! Take Charlie!" I yelled over to her. She nodded as Charlie rushed over, looking back at me with a tear-filled face, "I love you, sweetie, stay with them!" I shouted, smiling at him one more time before they took him with them.
Hershel and I kept firing as they called out to us, begging us to go, but they soon stopped as I waved them away, telling them to get out of here. Trusting Carol and Lori with the only thing that mattered to me.
My son.
I had no idea what was going on, where they were, where my son was. I had to trust that Carol and Lori would protect him.
Hershel and I began backing up, we were getting overwhelmed and I only had so many bullets. Looking around for Daryl's motorbike, I spotted it. "Hershel, get back to the cars, we have to go!" I yelled but he ignored me,
"You go, go to Daryl!"
I began having an internal battle. I didn't want to leave him, but the farm was lost, he knew that..
With a snarl, I began running, heading in the direction of Daryl's bike.
I was racing through the horde, dodging the walkers as I headed towards where I saw Daryl sat. "Daryl!" I yelled over the moans of the walkers. "Daryl!"
His head whipped around, seeing me running towards him, my legs struggling to carry me. He quickly started up his motorbike and pulled up next to me, "Where's Charlie?!"
"With Lori and Carol!" I shouted as he pulled me onto the back.
We shot off, leaving the remainder of the farm and heading back towards the highway.
As we left, I turned and saw the amber lit sky as the barn continued to go up in flames, our safe haven once more ripped apart in front of us, going up in flames again.
It became more and more apparent to me that nowhere was safe as I held on tight to Daryl.
The sky began to lighten as we continued down the road together.
There was a dark hole at the bottom of my stomach as we neared the highway, but the journey was long as the longer it took, the worse I felt.
A bad feeling brewing.
We pulled onto the highway, Carol, Rick, Hershel and Carl already there as more cars followed, pulling in behind us. I threw myself off the bike towards Carol and Lori as e4veryone reunited with their family, "Where is he?" I asked, not seeing my son.
"Where's Charlie?!" I yelled.
Carol's eye's filled with tears as she looked at me, "I got separated from them, Andrea..- He was with her..-I'm so sorry!"
My eyes widened as my world crashed even further around me.
He was gone.
My son.
"No, no, no, no, no!" I yelled, falling to the ground, Daryl catching me slightly as I cried. My pain rung out around the highway as Carol apologised.
"Where's Andrea then?" Daryl grunted as he held me.
They stayed silent for a second before Lori spoke, "We saw her get taken down.."
I cried harder, they were dead, both of them. My son was dead.
I stood up, "I'm going back, I'm getting my son back"
"No, you can't, I'm sorry, he's either dead or somewhere else with Andrea.." Rick said, looking me in the eyes.
"He's my son!"
Glenn stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder as Daryl shuffled through his bike. "So we're not even gonna look for them?"
"We've gotta keep moving, there will be walkers crawling all over this place" Rick explained.
T looked at us all, "I say head east"
"Stay off the main road, bigger the road, the more assholes like this one" Daryl explained, aiming at the walker.
The arrow landed in the walkers eye as it dropped to the floor. We all stood in silence as people began sorting themselves into cars.
I couldn't speak.
I couldn't move.
I was supposed to protect him and now...now he was gone..
"We get settled, we'll find him," Daryl promised as they started up the cars.
I shook my head, "He's gone..I lost him.."
"hey, we'll find him, we will"
