Chapter thirty-six

We spent the day piling up the bodies, leaving the prisoners in the entrance as we began moving the cars and bikes.

It was exhausting work. I wiped the sweat from my brow as Daryl parked his bike beside me. He smirked, "Thirsty work?" He chuckled, throwing me  bottle of water before heading with Rick and Glenn to gather some wood.

Carol, T and I parked the cars, smiling as we spotted Hershel now out and about.

We all watched, smiling as life finally seemed to be coming together. Life, in that moment, seemed perfect.

As we stood watching,a large group of walkers started approaching from behind.

Quickly, Maggie and I raced over, our knives and gun in our hands as we headed over. My mind was consumed with getting everyone to safety as Carol and T jumped in. Gun shots ran out, yet again.

Walkers dropped, but not quickly enough.

I kept firing my gun rapidly, burning through the ammo. "Maggie! I'm out" I yelled,

"Kelly, here!" T yelled, throwing me a gun.

I caught it and immediately resumed. "That gate is open!" T noted as Maggie guided Lori and Carl to safety, leaving Carol, T and myself to find cover.

"Carol!" I screamed as a walker came up from behind her. T headed for the gate, locking it up as Carol and I searched for a way out.

We watched as a walker ripped into T's shoulder, "T!" We screamed as he let out a roar of pain.

"In here!" I shouted over to him while we raced inside.

As we rushed around inside, we heard an alarm going off.

The alarm echoed around the halls while we continued to run, "There's a set of double doors that will lead to a corridor, that will get you back to the cell block" T explained, cursing in pain.

"T, slow down!"I urged,

He shook his head, "What, and sit and wait to turn into one of those things? Nah, I'm getting you both back!"

I grabbed him, "You're not becoming one of those things"

He kept moving, shrugging me off, "I can't ask that"

"It's my job as a friend!"

"This is God's plan, he'll take care of me, always has, he's gonna lead me out of these tunnels!" He groaned, leaning against the wall for support as I kept Carol in front, always checking  behind us.

The further into the prison we got, the worse T got. He was struggling to walk, Carol and I assisting him as green lights flashed around us. We turned a corner, walker groans stopping us.

Two of them. Carol aimed her gun, but she was out of ammunition as was I out. "I'm out too" She cried. "Get back" She muttered to T.

T ignored her, pulling himself from the shackles of our grip and running into the walkers, wrestling with them.

He threw them into the wall, holding them back as he screamed at us to go. Carol stood, frozen as I grabbed her, "Carol, we have to go, come on" I cried.

I pushed her ahead as I turned back, seeing T getting ripped apart by the walkers, "I'm sorry.." I whispered over his scream before I followed behind Carol. We barged through the doors, tears in our eyes as we continued to run through the maze.

We came to a crossroads, walkers coming from three entrances, close to us. "Carol, go, get Daryl and Rick!" I yelled, recognizing how close we were to the cell block.

"What about you?" She cried,

I shook my head, "I'll be fine, go!"

She nodded, reluctantly running.

I kept the walkers distracted before slamming the door to a small cupboard closed. Leaving the walkers stuck outside, waiting for the storm to pass.

As I sat in the cupboard, warm tears dripped onto my cheeks, my knees pressed up to chest.

I had my head buried into my knees as I thought about everything we'd lost.

Amy,

Dale,

Jim,

Charlie..

I closed my eyes, maybe this was it, maybe it was time..

Daryl's POV

Rick lay on the ground as Carol threw herself out of the door, disorientated as we headed over to her. T and Kelly were missing, "Where is she?" I asked quietly as Carol shook her head.

"I don't know..She was with me and then she wasn't..She told me to get you!" Carol panted, exhausted and out of breath.

My eyes began flickering around the situation. The newborn baby's screams were ringing through the air while I knelt in front of Rick, waving my hands in front of him to wake him from his trance.

First, I had to deal with the situation at hand, the new arrival.

"Let me see the baby," Hershel demanded as I sighed,

"We got anything a baby can eat? What we gonna feed it?"

Hershel nodded, "The good news is, she looks healthy, but she needs formula and soon or she won't survive"

I shook my head, shifting my crossbow onto my back, "Nope, not--"

My sentence was cut short as the door threw itself open with a bang and a creak. Our eyes all fell on the door as a weak and limp Kelly clambered out, seemingly struggling for breath.

Immediately, I ran over, concern flooded my face. "Hey, Kel, hey" I whispered, kneeling beside her and helping her to her feet.

"I'm okay, I'm okay.." She muttered, looking around at the disheveled group. "What happened?" She asked before realising that there was a new addition to the group as well as one missing. "Oh God,"

Her face dropped and she shook her head. "The baby, is it okay?" She panicked,

I nodded, "Hershel say's she's fine, needs food though, quick"

"I want to come," She said.

I shook my head at her, "No, Maggie already offered, stay here"

She rolled her eyes, "No, Daryl, I want to come, Rick isn't losing that baby, I know what I'm looking for"

Sighing, I nodded, looking over at Maggie who also nodded, signalling me to take Kelly instead.

"Come on then, we gotta be quick"
