Chapter thirty-one

We were all gathered around the metal fence as Rick cut us a way in. Every able-body was defending the group, knocking walkers out of the way as they approached.

Rick hushed everyone in as Daryl held part of the cut fence open. It rattled as Glenn plummeted his shovel into a walkers head. "Kelly, T" Rick whispered as I climbed through, Daryl helping me slightly before Rick climbed in.

As soon as he had, Glenn was wrapping and mending the fence with some wire.

We had already caught the attention of most of the walkers as they all rushed to the fence to get a taste of us. Most of the walkers inside the prison walls were wearing their jumpsuits but on the other side of the fence, walkers in regular clothes banged at us and snarled.

Doing our best to ignore it and stay quiet, we ran around, heading for the entrance where we could get in. More and more walkers gathered as we all ran. "It's perfect, if we can shut that gate, prevent more from filling the yard, we can take down these walkers, we can have the field by the night" Rick explained with hope spilling from his voice.

"I'll close the gate, you cover me" Glenn volunteered but his new lover disagreed,

Shaking her head, Maggie spoke, "No, it's  suicide run"

"No, you, Maggie and Beth draw as many as you can over there, pop em through the fence" Rick began, laying out his plan, "Daryl, Kelly, go back to the other tower. Hershel, you, Carl and Carol take this tower, take your time, we don't have a lot of ammo to waste"

"I'll run for the gate.." He muttered to himself as we all fled to our assigned posts.

As Daryl and I raced back to the tower, he looked over at me and nodded before busting open the door.

The stairs to the top spiraled as we ran as fast as we could up them, pulling our weapons as we got to the top.

The sound of gunfire rang round the prison as fired at the walkers, allowing Rick enough time to close the gate, stopping more from littering the field. As soon as he had, he headed into a small tower beside the gate. "He did it" I noted,

Daryl nodded, "Light it up!" He yelled, signalling that Rick was no longer in harms way.

We all smiled as the last shot rung out and the walker dropped to the floor. As we joined the others, I noted the sign which said, 'West Georgia Correctional facility'.

"Home sweet home"

Carol spun around on the grass as we all entered, peering into our new home.

There were smiles on people's face for the first time in months, a small smile even played on my lips as we began he process of moving the bodies to make way for camp.

The weather was getting better and so most of us had ditched the jackets, wearing our summer suitable attire.

As the sun set and the group lit a fire, Rick walked the perimeter, Daryl stood on top of an over turned prison bus with his crossbow in hand as I wandered over. "I'll take over, get some food"

He looked at me and shook his head, "Nah, I'm fine, we haven't really spoke about Charlie since--"

"I don't want to, I've made my peace with it" I spoke quickly. "I want to move on"

He nodded, "I understand, just so you know though, I miss him too.."

We stood in silence for a few minutes until we heard a faint voice begin to sing, we slowly climbed down and headed towards the group.

We stayed stood, listening as Maggie joined in softly singing to the group. I looked at Daryl and smiled, he smiled back as Rick spoke, "We should all turn in," He began, "I'll take watch over there, got a big day tomorrow."

"What do you mean?" Glenn asked quietly.

"Look, I know we're all exhausted, this was a great win. But, we've got to push just a little more. Most of the walkers are dressed as guards and prisoners, looks like this place fell pretty early. There could still be supplies intact. They'd have an infirmary, com missionary,--"

Daryl nodded, "Armory?"

"Canteen" I smiled.

Hershel sighed, "We're dangerously low on ammo, we'd run out before we make a dent"

"That's why we have to go in there, hand to hand. After all we've been through, we can handle it, I know it. Those assholes don't stand a chance" Rick smiled at the group before he headed off to take watch.

We all began shuffling and laying down, Daryl laid down close by like usual.

I starred up at the sky as we awaited the next day, the Hell and the chaos.

It would be dangerous but seeing the stars calmed me.

They continued to light up the night sky as we all drifted to sleep..

The sun had risen and we were ready. Having barely slept the night before, I was relying purely on my own adrenaline.

We were formed in a circle, keeping our backs close together, ensuring we could do it safely.

As the walkers approached, we took one step out to kill them before returning. I plummeted my small knife into a walkers head as we continued to move towards the building in front of us.

One by one, our walker tally rose as we carried on. The rest of the group were catching their attention by rattling the fence and killing them through the fence.

We tried our best to keep the circle, but it broke as multiple walkers came at us from the same direction, causing Daryl and I to get left behind slightly.

As quick as we could, we backed up, rejoining the others.

T broke rank to pick up a riot shield but we quickly reformed it and continued on. "Almost there!" Rick informed us. As he opened a door slowly.

He peered around the corner seeing a large group full of walkers, with no gate to stop them from filtering into this courtyard.

As we all took a breather, more walkers, dressed in riot gear approached. Daryl fired an arrow at them but it slid down off it's face, the headgear protecting them. "Walkers in riot gear, great" I muttered sarcastically to myself.

All of us struggled against the walkers in riot gear, our knives not able to reach their skulls because of the barrier.

"Daryl!!" Rick yelled as he ran to close the gate. Daryl quickly followed up behind, watching his back as the pair closed the gate.

Glenn, T, Maggie and I were stuck struggling to kill the walkers until Maggie pulled ones head up slightly, giving her just enough room to get her knife in. "See that!" She grinned as we all copied.

We finally managed to kill most of them, Maggie rushing of to kill one she spotted still moving as we caught our breath for a second.

Finally, the courtyard was clear. "It looks secure..." Glenn said quietly.

"Not that courtyard over there, and that's a civilian" Daryl pointed out, gesturing towards the woman that was laid on the ground.

T sighed, "So the interior could be over run"

"What are we gonna do if there's walls down?" Glenn said exasperated, "We can't rebuild this whole place"

Rick nodded, "We can't risk a blind spot, we have to push in" He announced.

We all nodded, following behind until we came to a door..
