Chapter sixty-eight

The ceiling above us rattled and crumbled as a loud bang swallowed the air. I sat on the bed alone, Daryl having left shortly before when the noise disturbed us all.

It was supposed to be a quiet day, no one leaving and no one coming - Daryl had made it quite clear that we would be staying put for a while before we volunteered for any more runs.

Everyone raced out into the halls, my gun in my holster as we all headed outside. The sun blinded me as I threw open the steel door and let everyone flood out.

Maggie, Carl and the others followed behind as we met up with Rick, Daryl and Tyreese. The guard tower closest to us was alight once more and we all approached the wired fences to take a closer look at what was going on.

Daryl pushed me towards the wall where everyone else was taking shelter. We all noticed the rows of cars and a tank that sat at the bottom of our gravel drive.

I took in a sharp intake of breath, "Rick, come down here, we need to talk" A familiar voice yelled up to us all.

Slowly, we all stepped out into the open to inspect the opposition. Our breaths sped up as we all stood tightly packed together, the panic spreading through us all as Daryl nudged me subtly into his side. "It's not up to me!" Rick called back. "There's a council now! They run this place"

The Governor stood tall and mighty at the bottom of the hill, "Is Hershel on the council?" he asked with a sinister tone as someone escorted Hershel out of a car and onto the ground.

Maggie and Beth gasped as the man before us all continued, "What about Michonne, is she on the council too?"

"I don't make decisions any more!" Rick screamed at him but he didn't falter.

"Well you're making the decisions today, Rick, come down here, let's have a little talk" The Governor spoke as his words engulfed Rick. His tone was smooth and I had no doubt that he had painted us all to be monsters.

But it was him, he was the monster and I was going to slay him. It was going to be me.

I took a step forward and turned to Rick, "Let me, I'll go, shoot him straight up, give you enough time to help everyone out" I stuttered, my mind barely able to function with the taste of revenge spilling from my mouth, it was tantalizing.

Daryl gripped my arm tight and pulled me back, "Are you insane? They'll kill you before you have a chance to pull your gun and even if you do manage it, they'll still kill you, it's a suicide mission"

I sighed, my eyes glassing slightly as I looked up at him, "I have to, it's all I have Daryl. I have to make him feel my pain" I  whispered.

"No, I'll talk to him," Rick decided after a few moments.

He nodded at us, speaking silent words before we all watched him slowly march down to the front gate where the Governor was waiting.

"We can't take them all on," Daryl sighed, "Go through the admin building take them through the woods like we planned. We ain't got the numbers no more"

I sighed, "And the fact he has a tank?"

Sasha nodded with a raised brow.

"Has anyone checked the rations on the bus lately?" Daryl asked with a low, quiet voice.

"Day before we hit the big spot, we were running low then, we're running lower now" She admitted with a heavy sigh.

"Let everyone know to head for the bus, when things go south, everyone is on that bus" I muttered.

Tyreese nodded, "What if not everyone is on when things go south? How long do we wait?"

Daryl shuffled past him, "As long as you can"

Daryl tugged me to the side, away from the group. "You get everyone on that bus and you go with them, understand? Don't wait for me"

I shook my head, "No, Daryl, I'm not hiding on some bus while you run off into battle. I'm going to be there, right by your side" I growled.

He placed his cold hands on the sides of my face, "This isn't some battle, this is serious, we have to get people out of here or we will all die"

"Beth can handle it." I snarled.

Seeing the Governor had brought back a whole host of emotions I thought I had buried deep. It had brought back a new fire that seemed to be burning everyone around me, Daryl worst of all. I could feel myself getting hellbent on destroying the Governor once more and despite my hardest efforts, I couldn't put out the fires.

I tried walking away from Daryl but he just spun me back around, "I know what he did to you," Daryl began, "What he did to us..-I know how much hurt he's caused you but don't get stupid, I'm here, don't act like I'm not" He muttered quietly, appealing to my softer side successfully.

I nodded and slowly threw my arms around him before we pulled apart and started handing out guns to any able body. Finally, Daryl passed me one, he had a look on his face I'd never seen before - Worry - Anger - Pain - And love, all jumbled up into one.

Everyone poked their guns through the fence as we watched and waited. "He's never gonna let us walk away alive" I muttered as we all watched intently.

"Maybe he will, maybe he's changed" Tyreese whispered from the side of me,

I scoffed and shook my head, "You're a fool to think anything else"

Tyreese sighed from the side of me.

Suddenly, the Governor shifted. He was angry.

He pulled Michonne's blade from someone and held it against Hershel's neck.

From behind me, I heard the whimpers of Maggie and Beth as I looked over at Daryl, "Daryl, what do we do?" I growled quietly.

He didn't answer as we all watched with our brows furrowed and our mouths open.

The Governor held the weapon in his hand and gently pulled it away from Hershel, for a split second, we thought it was over until he swung and the blade ripped through Hershel's neck.

I threw myself at the metal fences, causing them to rattle slightly as Rick screamed and fired a bullet at the Governor.

The fire in me grew higher and hotter as I fired the gun, my mind numb as I aimed and pulled the trigger, letting it fall gently when they fell to the ground.

It was Hell on earth..
