Chapter sixty

"It's spread. Everyone who survived the attack in cell block D, Sasha, Caleb and others" Hershel informed us all.

"Jesus" Daryl mumbled at the side of me.

Glenn sighed, "So what do we do now?"

"First thing's first is isolation, we keep the sick people in cell block A, we keep the sick people there like we tried with Karen and David" Hershel began to explain.

"The Hell we gonna do about that?" Daryl muttered.

"I'll ask Rick to look into it, make a timeline, who was where when" Carol nodded at us all. "But, what are we gonna do to stop this?"

Hershel shook his head, "There is no stopping this, you get it, you just have to go through it"

"Everyone that got it so far has died, we can't just go through it" I muttered to the group.

"It's not the illness that kills you, its the symptoms, we need some antibiotics" Hershel explained to us.

Daryl sighed, "We've been through every pharmacy nearby and then some"

"That veterinary college at West Peachtree Tech, that's one place people may not have thought to raid for medication, the drugs for animals there are the same we need" Hershel informed us.

Daryl nodded, "That's 50 miles out, too big a risk before, ain't now, I'll take a group out"

"I'm coming" I nodded at him.

Michonne stepped forward into the light, "I'm in"

Hershel turned to face her, "You haven't been exposed, Daryl has, you get in a car with him-"

"He's already given me the fleas" Michonne joked causing everyone to chuckle slightly and stand.

"I can lead the way," Expressed Hershel, "I know where everything is"

Daryl was slightly hesitant to take Hershel, "Out there, it's always the same, sooner or later you run"

Hershel nodded at this, "I can draw you a map?" He compromised.

Daryl agreed with this and began walking until Hershel spoke again, "I feel there are other precautions we should take, there's no telling how long it'll be before Daryl and the group return, wouldn't it make sense to separate the most vulnerable? We can use the administration building, separate office, separate room" He explained.

"Who is the most vulnerable?" Glenn asked.

"The young"

"What about the very old?" Glenn said with a shrug.

Hershel nodded and agreed and before we knew it we were packing ready to head off again.

Daryl and I packed the bags into the car, along with guns, ammo and knives. I wiped my brow, sweat pouring from my forehead and my throat suddenly dry. "Daryl, you got some water?" I asked, desperately trying to hydrate myself.

Daryl nodded, passing me a half filled bottle of water. I drunk it quickly, almost emptying the bottle in a matter of seconds. Daryl raised his brow at me, watching as the sweat soaked my hair.

My head began pounding, my vision going funny and my head beginning to spin as I fell to the floor, landing on all fours. I spotted Daryl coming over from the corner of my eye but I quickly held my hand up, "Don't!" I yelled, realising what was happening. "I think..I think I have it-"

Daryl stumbled back as my vision came back and I was able to stand again. His face held pain and fear. "Daryl" I cried out,

"Hey-It'll be okay, head to the cell block, it'll be okay, the Doc will sort you out" He said, trying to reassure me but he was barely sure himself and it showed.

A singular tear fell from my eye as I nodded and looked at him, quickly taking myself away, leaving Daryl watching me as I left.

As I entered the cell block my eyes went wide, people coughing and spluttering everywhere. I searched for somewhere to rest my eyes for a second, turning the corner and coming eye to eye with Glenn. I sighed, "You too?" He asked to which I nodded.

"How is it in here?" I whispered before coughing slightly.

"There's no space, more and more people coming in. Dr S is sick too," Glenn informed me. "How is Maggie?"

I smiled, sweat dripping from my nose, "She's fine, she's-" I cut off, my breaths getting shorter and shorter as I stumbled back slightly, Glenn grabbing me to help steady me.

Glancing over at the large, air tight door, I spotted Daryl's face, looking in at me. "Daryl" I whispered to myself, making my way back over to the door.

I fell forward, landing with my hands against the glass. "Daryl.." I whispered again,

His eyes looked at me with a sadden look on his face, "We're heading out" He muttered back to me, "Just hang on, I'm gonna come back with what you need, make you better"

I nodded, "I'm scared, Daryl, what if--"

He shook his head at me quickly, his eyes glassing over, "No what if's, alright? You're gonna be okay, I promise," Tears fell as I held myself up against the door.

Daryl glanced at his shoes for a second before looking back at me, he was desperately trying to blink back the tears, "I'm coming back, alright, and you're gonna be waiting when I get back"

I nodded, gulping. "I love you, beautiful" He muttered, his voice low as he established my nickname.

"I love you too" I said, my voice exasperated as he turned and left, leaving me alone in the tomb.

Shortly after Daryl left, Hershel entered. He explained to Glenn, Sasha and I that he had made some natural herbal remedies to fight the virus. The three of us were happy to help him with anything he needed, it was something to keep us busy and to keep our minds trained on something else.

It was difficult to walk at times, taking all my breath to get to a cell block and pass someone the tea but I did it. I had to, I wasn't waiting around to die, my last moments were going to count - I was making damn sure of that.

I took comfort in knowing that, when I died, I'd be joining Charlie and Dale. Part of me knew that it was stupid to believe that they were elsewhere, but it was something that helped me cope with the deaths better.
