Chapter forty
♤
After a while, the Governor, Merle and another of their henchmen came in, grabbing me and tearing me away from the room I was situated in.
The Governor had a tight grip on me as we entered the room Glenn was being held in. "We're through with games, tell us where the camp is"
Glenn looked conflicted as blood dripped down my leg, my wound needing seeing to. "If you do this Merle, Daryl will never forgive you!" I yelled, squirming until a gun was put against my head.
You could see the pain in Glenn's eyes until the Governor turned the gun against him, causing me to make the decision on Glenn's life. "The prison!" I cried, finally giving up, "We took it.."
"How many of you?" Merle asked.
"10"
The Governor let out a laugh, leaving us alone. Merle looked at me, the last person to leave.
I let out a small cry as I fell to the floor. Glenn ripped a part of his top, putting pressure against the wound causing me to writhe in pain. "I'm sorry.." I whispered, holding the cloth against my cut.
"Hey," Glenn sighed, "It's alright, it's alright. You did what any one of us would've done"
I snorted slightly, "Did I? I just told them where we are.."
He nodded, "He held a gun against out heads,--"
"More people are going to die, Glenn, because of me.." I cried, he wrapped a gently, friendly arm around me to calm me.
He let me cry into his shoulder for a while, blood still dripping from his face and mine. After long, Glenn stood up, moaning in pain as he ripped the walkers arm from its body, ripping out two bones, one for him and one for me.
I grabbed it, nodding slightly, the blood of the walker soaking my hand, mixing with my dried blood. We stood in front of the door, waiting for it to open, and when it finally did, we jumped.
It was Merle and Ben. Glenn grabbed Merle and I grabbed Ben. I slowly plunged the bone into his neck, tearing it the blood spilling onto my hand as he dropped to the floor. As he fell, his gun exploded, making me jump.
I then picked up the gun, it was heavy in my hand as I pointed it at Merle. "Let him go" I yelled, gesturing to Glenn.
Merle sighed, "This is not the way I imagined we'd meet again, sweetheart" He glanced behind me and as I turned, I saw all the people emerging from the corner with guns.
Merle knocked the gun out of my hand, pushing me backwards slightly as he pointed the gun at Glenn. They pushed us back into the room, throwing us onto our knees.
Glenn and I looked at each other for the last time before bags were put over our heads and we were escorted out. We reluctantly walked with them until a loud bang went off, disorientating us.
I tried my best to get away from Merle's tight grip on me, once I did, the bag was pulled off my head and I was met with Daryl who's eyes held pain as he saw my battered and bruised face.
The guided us out and into the streets before we moved back into another building. As soon as the door shut, I leaned against the table, Glenn falling on the floor, blood was once again spilling from my leg. "You alright?" Daryl asked, wrapping my leg quickly.
"Daryl.." Glenn groaned.
I shook my head, "Glenn..not now"
"It was Merle, he did this to us, he's here" Glenn told Daryl, despite my concerns.
Daryl's face dropped as he looked at me, "He did this to you?" He asked, looking at my face,
I shook my head again, "No, someone else"
"Daryl, he knows you're with us, he's with this Governor" I explained. "I told him where the prison was...I couldn't-"
"Hey! It's alright" Rick said, hoisting Glenn up to his feet, "I understand"
Daryl paced, "If Merle's around, I need to go get him"
Rick stopped Daryl, "No, look what he did, to Glenn, he was going to execute Kelly..We have to go"
"I can talk to him, he's my brother, I ain't gonna leave him"
"No, not today, they are hurt, I can barely walk, I need you!" Rick pleaded with Daryl.
Daryl nodded, "Alright.."
He rushed to my side, offering support, though I turned it away as we prepared to move.
Daryl threw a canister of tear gas out of the door, wrapping his bandanna around my face to stop it getting in my system as everyone covered their noses and headed out. Rick and Daryl fired shots as we all crept along behind them. I stayed close to Daryl who handed me a handgun as took cover.
"We got to gun it to the wall!" Rick yelled.
Daryl handed out weapons, "You guys go, I'll lay down some cover fire, it's too hairy out there"
I looked him dead in the eye and nodded, "I'm staying with you." He shook his head but I grabbed his hand, "I'm not leaving you again"
Daryl signaled to Rick as the group separated. Daryl and I shot into the smoke, aiming at the little flashes of light emitted by the raging guns.
"Daryl!" Rick yelled as they climbed over the walls, Daryl looked back and nodded but we carried on firing.
The gun shots rattled around, attracting walkers for miles. Smoke rose into the air as more and more gas canisters were thrown, compromising everyone's vision. "C'mon" Daryl yelled, pulling me away. As we began moving from cover, Daryl was tackled from behind, a bag covering his head.
I squirmed as another large pair of arms grabbed me, dragging me along the floor, "Daryl!" I called out,
"Kelly" He shouted back, letting me know he was still there.
My legs trailed along the floor as I was dragged by my arms. I could hear murmurs as we continued, "These, two of the terrorists!" A voice shouted, grabbing onto my arm as the bag was removed from my head and I found myself stood in front of a crowd of people, Merle in front of me and Daryl to the side.
Daryl glanced over at me, slight fear as he looked between Daryl and I. "Merle's own brother!" The Governor announced, before smirking slightly and nodding over at someone, "And this woman, a woman who couldn't even look after her son, she couldn't even stop her son from turning into one of those things!" He yelled as a man brought forward a walker, a small boy.
My heart sank as I saw the patchy ginger hair, the blue trainers, the dulled blue eyes and the sunken cheeks. I let out a cry as they brought him forward, the Governor handing Daryl over to someone else as the boy was brought face to face with me.
"Charlie..." I cried, the boy snarling at me, "Charlie..." I cried harder.
"And tonight, she pays the ultimate price--" The Governor yelled to the crowd before a bullet was wedged between my sons head, his blood splattering all over me, melting into my tears.
I froze as his body fell to the floor and the world fell in on me, yet again.
It was like watching him die twice, except, I missed it the first time. The pain of losing him came rushing back, the Governor pulled me back up, throwing me into Daryl who had his hands behind his back as Merle looked at us in shock, glancing back at the body of the boy on the floor.
A new wave of emotion fell over me, fear. The crowds of angry people chanted for us to die, as if doing some ritual. My eyes flickered quickly between Daryl and Merle, who both looked as shocked and distressed as I was.
Suddenly, it was us 3 against each other, survival of the fittest.
