Chapter fifty-nine

The sound of our shovels digging into the ground sped through the air as I shoveled, caught up in my own thoughts as Rick approached.

"Glad you were in there" Daryl said to Rick as he pulled his bandanna down.

Rick looked at him with a sad face, "Wasn't much help without my gun"

Daryl stopped shoveling as I climbed out of the hole, catching my breath. "No, you were," Daryl started, "All this time you've been taking off, you earned it. We wouldn't be here without you"

Rick took the shovel from me, allowing me a small break as the two men continued to dig. "Ah, it was all of us"

"Nah, it was you first. So, you gonna help us figure this out?" Daryl asked.

Rick shook his head, looking at Daryl, "I screwed up too many times, those calls you got to make, if I start down that road..I almost lost my boy, who he was, whatever else this place want's I'm here for"

Daryl carried on, "Like I said, you earned it. But for what it's worth, you see mistakes, I see when shit his, you're standing there with a shovel" He spoke, climbing out of the grave.

"Rick! Daryl! Kelly!" Maggie's worried voice yelled over to us as we looked at the herd of walkers leaning on the fence.

"Oh shit!" Rick yelled as he quickly took off, heading straight for the fence, Daryl and I running along close by.

A large group of us grabbed our hand held weapons and began popping them through the fence, trying our best to relieve the tension on the fence.

As I stabbed them, I heard the sound of the metal bending under the weight.

"Are you seeing this?" Sasha called out to us from the side. "Is someone feeding these things?"  She asked as I stood beside her, seeing the half eaten rats.

"Yo, heads up!" Daryl shouted to us as the fence bent some more.

It was practically on top of us, one walker higher than the rest as we pushed against it, Glenn screaming at us.

The more they pushed, the less we could do. We couldn't physically hold it up ourselves. "If it bends anymore we're screwed" I sighed.

Rick wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked at Daryl, "Get the truck, I know what to do"

Daryl nodded and immediately took off.

Soon, Rick and Daryl were driving the pigs out of the prison and towards the walkers. They were planning on using the pigs to lure the walkers away, giving us enough time to put the supports up against the fence.

Glenn, Sasha and I placed logs of wood against the fences as support as Rick and Daryl left the last pig, heading back to the prison where Tyreese and Maggie opened the gates.

Daryl parked the van up and Rick immediately headed over to the pig pen and began ripping it apart.

I headed back up to the courtyard, watching Rick until Daryl stood by my side. "You alright?" He asked quietly to which I shrugged.

He said nothing more, he only pulled me into his side and planted a kiss on my head while I wrapped my arms around him.

We stayed like that a while, watching as the world carried on around us.

"We should go back down and help again" I sighed, not wanting to move from there.

"Daryl, Kelly, come with me" Carol called to us.

We both followed her down the hallways, following a blood trail on the floor.

As we entered the open air once more, the smell of burnt flesh hit me. Tyreese and Rick were already stood over the bodies as Tyreese shouted. "Somebody dragged them out here and set them on fire!" He yelled.

Suddenly, he turned to Rick, alarming Daryl. "You're a cop."He started, "You find out who did this and you bring them to me, understand? You bring them to me!"

"Hey man, we'll find out who did this-" Daryl started, trying to comfort the man, but he only shrugged Daryl off, staring at Rick.

"I need to say it again?" Tyreese asked aggressively.

Rick shook his head quickly, "No, I know what you're feeling. I've been there, you saw me, it's dangerous"

Tyreese seemed to ignore Rick's warning and continued, "Karen didn't deserve this. David didn't deserve this. Nobody does!" He yelled.

Daryl stepped forward again, placing a hand on his shoulder, "Alright man, let's bring this-"

Tyreese turned around and snapped.

He grabbed Daryl, throwing him into the wall behind them. Carol, Rick and I immediately lunged forward, my face flooding with worry until Daryl put his hand out, warning us away. "We're on the same side, man" Daryl muttered to Tyreese as he breathed heavily, shaking as he held Daryl.

"Hey, look" Rick began, his voice low, "I know what you're going through, we've all lost someone, but you got to calm down"

This made Tyreese angry and he quickly lunged for Rick, pushing him away. "Hey, come on" I said, stepping in front of Rick and looking at Tyreese. "Karen wouldn't want this"

Tyreese's eyes snapped towards me, stepping over to me. Daryl shot Rick a worried look and so Rick stepped next to me, "She's right, we all need to calm down" Tyreese immediately threw his fit.

"Stop!" Carol yelled as Rick fell to the floor.

Tyreese threw another punch as Daryl jumped on his back, holding him back.

Rick stood up, Daryl still holding onto Tyreese and returned the favour, knocking the large man onto the floor and out of Daryl's hands.

He then proceeded to stand over the man, punching him repeatedly. "Rick" I called out, stepping towards him slightly. I grazed Rick arm, trying to get through to him but he only saw this as an attack on him and pushed me, hard, away causing me to stumble back, Carol catching me.

Daryl approached Rick quickly, dragging him off as Rick screamed before he realised what he'd done, having pushed both Daryl and I away.

Daryl glanced over at me, checking me up and down as Rick stood with a blood covered hand, becoming the thing he was scared of once more.

We watched Rick leave, Daryl pulling me away not long after.
