:Darker Than Black: [Chapter: Twenty-Seven] //An Original Story//

"Emmery! Emmery, what's wrong? Calm down!"

I felt something shaking me and after I second I realized I was out of my vision, and still screaming. I immediately stopped, covering my mouth with my hand.

Matt stared at me, his face pale. "What's wrong?"

"Hudson," I choked, my voice constricted with panic.

"What about him?"

"I saw him in my vision! I think he fell off a building," I explained, forcing myself to remember what the place looked like. "The building was really familiar... I've definitely been there before."

"What did it look like?" Matt asked.

I twisted my mouth. "I couldn't tell a lot because it was dark, but it was about three stories. And old. It kind of looked like it had been abandoned."

"Anything else?"

"Part of the roof and wall were collapsed... and it was in the middle of nowhere. It looked like it had been... on..." I trailed off, my eyes growing wide.

"Looked like it had been what?" Matt pressed.

"On fire," I whispered to him.

Matt looked at me in confusion for a few seconds. Then his eyes widened and his mouth opened in shock.

"The place where I tried to kill you?" he finally said.

I nodded quickly. "It's definitely that place! I remember now! Part of the wall and roof had collapsed before I escaped! Exactly where it had collapsed in the vision!"

"But that's all the way across town! We won't have time-"

"We need to get out of here," I told him, cutting him off. "Help me."

"Help you what?"

I walked over to the door and started kicking it with my foot. I gestured with my head for Matt to do the same. He watched me apprehensively.

"This is public property. That's illegal..."

I gave him a flat look. "Will you stop with the illegal stuff? You tried to kill me once! I'm sure busting down a door to save a friend is justified! Now help!"

Matt smirked and rolled his eyes before joining me at the door.

"Back up," he ordered.

"Why?"

"I can handle this myself."

"You sure?" I asked.

"Go," he said, pushing me back.

I went behind him and he backed up a few feet away from the door. In one fast movement, his leg hit the center of the door, making it crack slightly. He repeated the movement, and a hole appeared.

I watched in slight astonishment. "Did you take karate?"

"Since I was five," he replied with a wink.

He stuck his hand through the hole he made and reached around for the door handle. After a moment, I heard a jiggle and Matt pulled the door open.

Matt turned and grinned at me. "Who's the man?"

"Let's go!" I cried, pushing past him and out of the room.

I paid no attention to the items on the floor as I bolted for the exit of the store. I stumbled once, but managed to catch myself. Matt stayed right behind me.

"My car's this way," he told me when we made it outside.

"Ok."

We ran down the street to where Matt's car was parked and I quickly got in the passenger's side. Matt hopped into the driver's side and started the engine immediately, peeling out in the street.

"Do you remember how to get to the building?" I asked.

Matt nodded. "Yeah. It should take about half an hour."

I nodded. We had plenty of time to make it there. But just in case, I knew we should get there as soon as possible.

As soon as we were on the highway, Matt pressed the gas pedal to the floor. I swallowed nervously as we hit 100mph.

"Aren't we going to fast?" I asked, watching as the setting outside hurtled by.

"It's a limit free highway and there isn't really anyone out, so we're fine," Matt told me, his eyes focused on the road.

I nodded and looked down into my lap.

Was Hudson still okay? Could we trust that The Butterfly was giving us correct information? It was hard to know for sure.

The sound of a horn blaring filled my ears suddenly I was thrown against the window. I smashed my head into the glass so hard my vision blanked for a second.

"Shit," Matt swore, and I heard the squealing of tires.

When I could see again, I quickly looked around in panic. "What happened?"

"Some asshole cut me off!" he told me, turning around in his seat to check behind us.

"We're good though. No harm done, right?"

"Except my head," I muttered, touching it gingerly. "Whatever. Just go."

We took off again, this time wary of other cars. It was still dark out. I checked the clock. It had only been two hours since we left. To me, it felt like it had been forever and a day.

We drove in silence the rest of the way. My anxiousness kept me restless. I drummed my fingers continuously. Every now and then my hands would start shaking and I'd have to make them into a fist to get them to stop. Eventually I just forced my head down and shut my eyes and waited.

After awhile we took a sharp right and I heard the crunch of gravel underneath the tires.

"This is the place, right?"

I sat up, looking at our surroundings. A large, dark, building was standing before us. I recognized it immediately.

"This is the one!"

I opened the door to the car and stepped out, not bothering to shut it. I looked at the top of the building, where the giant hole was. A dark figure caught my attention and I looked over at Matt to point it out. He was already looking at it.

I opened my mouth to shout up at it, but Matt quickly shook his head and pressed a finger against his lips.

"It will work better if we sneak up on them. Just in case he decided to try something before we make it up there," he told me in a whisper. "I'll find a way to go up from behind, you go from the front."

I nodded. "Meet you at the top then."

Matt took off towards the back of the building while I started for the front. I climbed the steps slowly, trying not to make any noise. Surprisingly they were in good shape.

When I opened the door, it creaked slightly. I held my breath and paused, listening for any movements. When I didn't hear anything, I moved further into the room.

It was almost pitch black in the room. The only light came from the moon that shined through the window. I moved slowly and cautiously across the floor. The groans and squeaks I was producing didn't make me believe the floor was that safe to walk on.

I was kind of glad Matt had tried to kill me now. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to recognize this building. Or have an idea of its layout.

When I made it to the stairs, I held the banister tightly. Using extreme caution, I tested the first stair to see if it could withstand my weight. It groaned a little bit, but didn't give way so I continued until I made it to the top.

The second set of stairs was just around the corner, so they were easily found. Using caution again, I slowly made my way to the third floor.

My heart was racing now. It was pounding so hard I was sure Hudson and The Butterfly were both able to hear it. Holding my breath, I slowly crept towards the door that led to the room where the pair was.

I pressed my ear to the door before I went in. There was only silence. After a minute, a voice spoke up.

"Seems like we have a guest."

My breath caught and I froze, my eyes widening. How did he know I was here?

"Guess it's time for you to die, Hudson Matthews."

"Wait!" I cried, winging open the door, and barging in the room.

Someone in a dark sweatshirt with the hood on was facing me. I couldn't make out anything besides his body and mouth. His mouth twisted into a smirk.

I looked away from him for a moment and almost immediately my eyes locked with Hudson's. His eyes widened in shock. At the same time, the man I presumed to be The Butterfly raised his arm. Something that shined in the moonlight was in his hand.

I realized what it was at the last second. Hudson opened his mouth to say something as I opened my mouth to warn him.

"Watch ou-" I started at the same time he said, "Willo-"

Before either of us could finish, an ear-splitting gunshot filled the room.

I'm seriously just waiting for the day one of you comes to my house and murders me for my use of cliffhangers, hahahahahaha. I can't help it though D: They are so fun to do! And it keeps you coming back, no? ;D It's like Degrassi. Even if you want to stop watching it, you can't because there's always a cliffhanger!

Anyway. I'm proud of the votes you guys :3 Can we keep this up? Pretty pretty please?! I want this story to be really high on the What's Hot list because I think that the list needs more originality on the top 10 or something. And there are a lot of good stories that aren't, and should be, high on the What's Hot! It's really disheartening how so many werewolf stories, or stories whose plots are giving away in the title, are so far up ):

Well I'm done ranting.

VOTE!
