:Darker Than Black: [Chapter: 39] //An Original Story//

Hudson watched with apprehensive eyes as I helped Matt into my apartment. He closed the door behind us, a frown on his face. I struggled towards the couch, Matt doing his best to help me get him there. When we finally made it there, I helped him sit down gently. He hissed in pain halfway down.

"I'm sorry!" I apologized, immediately letting him go.

He fell the rest of the way onto the couch, groaning in pain. My eyes widened and I gasped. Hudson snickered from behind me.

"I'm so sorry!"

"Don't... help me again," Matt breathed, trying to shift into a more comfortable position. "Damn it. I should have just stayed in the hospital longer."

"Or you could go to your house," Hudson suggested, scowling at Matt.

Matt returned his look with a sardonic one. "I've explained this. And Emmery already said I could stay."

Hudson turned to me, a pout on his face. "But-"

"No buts," I said firmly. "I let you stay when you didn't have furniture at your house, and I'm letting Matt stay until he heals so his parents don't get suspicious."

"Because some of us actually have to live with their parents like normal children," Matt ended, crossing his arms.

"Won't your mom be suspicious that you haven't been home in over a week?"

Matt smirked. "I told her I was house sitting with a friend."

"For last week, and now another week?"

"She's gulliable," Matt responded with a shrug.

"Don't you feel bad for lying to her?" Hudson demanded, crossing his arms and glaring down at Matt.

Matt rolled his eyes. "It's better than having her have a heart attack after finding out what I've been through and finding out how injured I am. And anyway, you only have a problem because I'm staying with your girlfriend."

"Any man would!"

"Hey!" I cut in, elbowing Hudson in the side. "You two, don't fight. How old are you, five?"

Hudson sulked as I scolded him. He began to scuff the top of his shoe on my carpet while Matt just heaved a sigh.

"Fine," Hudson said, looking up. "Matt can stay."

Matt and I exchanged confused glances before looking at Hudson. A small smirk was forming on his mouth.

"But I'm staying as well."

I opened my mouth to protest but Matt beat me to it.

"You stayed here last week!"

"Why does it matter if I'm here or not?"

"Oh, uh, I don't know," Matt started sarcastically, "maybe because I don't want you and lover girl annoying me with your lovey dovey crap!"

I felt my face heat up and I glared at Matt. "We don't do lovey do- whatever stuff! And Hudson, your right next door! What is the difference between you staying at your house and mine?"

"There's just a difference," Hudson stated stubbornly, crossing his arms. "I'm staying to keep an eye on you two."

"Do you know trust me?" I asked, my voice lowering considerably.

Was that why he wanted to stay? Was I not trustworthy? Did he think I would cheat on him with Matt? I sent a hurt look at Hudson.

"That's not what I mean," he said quickly, stepping closer to me, and grabbing my hand. "Of course I trust you. It's him I don't trust."

Matt snorted. "Because I can do so much while injured like this."

"He's right," I pointed out. "He can't even walk on his own!"

"I'm staying," Hudson stated with an air of finality.

I sighed in defeat, dropping my head. Matt groaned in annoyance. I looked back up to see Hudson smirking.

"You're a pain in the ass, you know that?"

Hudson laughed, pulling me into a hug. "But I'm your pain in the ass."

Matt snorted, making me jump. I gave him a questioning look.

"Come on, you didn't think that sounded wrong in the least bit?" he asked, a wide smirk on his face.

I thought about it for a moment, and then I realized what he meant, and blushed, glaring at him. Hudson started laughing.

"You're right," he chuckled, letting me go as I tried to squirm away from him.

"Men," I muttered, going into the kitchen.

"What are you doing?" Hudson called after me.

"Making tea."

I opened the cupboard and grabbed the first box of tea I could find, not paying attention to the flavor, and not caring. If it was in the cupboard, chances were I liked it, since it was my house. I grabbed a teakettle and filled it up with water, putting it on the stove, and lighting the stovetop.

I heard Matt gasp and I quickly rushed back out into the living room, where he was staring wide-eyed at Hudson. When he noticed me, his eyes narrowed. I lifted an eyebrow in confusion.

"You lost your visions?"

I shot Hudson a glance. He shrugged back at me.

"It's over now, right? I was just letting Matt know."

I sighed, slowly nodding my head. "Ever since I woke up in the hospital, no visions have appeared. Every time I look in my mirror it's my reflection."

"So that means the Butterfly's dead," Hudson stated, nodding his head. "Well, they found the body, but still..."

"Speaking of which," Matt suddenly said, sounding excited, "at the hospital I heard to policemen talking about quote-unquote the Butterfly. His real name was Jeffrey Moore."

"He had a name?" I responded in surprise. "He told me he didn't have a name!"

"Everyone has a name, Willow," Hudson commented, a smirk on his face.

I frowned at him. Matt cleared his throat, gaining our attention again.

"I did some research on this guy, Jeffrey. He's had ten different name changes throughout his life."

"Ten?" Hudson commented in surprise.

Matt nodded. "It gets better. Looking at the time span between the changes, if he died this year, he should be around two-hundred years old..."

Hudson and I exchanged startled glances.

"How is that possible?" Hudson asked, his eyes wide.

I shook my head. "He wasn't human..."

Matt nodded his head in agreement. "He definitely wasn't human, that's for sure."

"Why would he let himself die then?" Hudson mused, a frown on his face.

"He wanted to die," I told Hudson in a quiet voice. "I never told you guys what happened in there..."

"I thought you didn't remember," Matt interjected.

I shook my head. "No, I remember what happened in there... I just don't remember what happened after the house caught on fire," I explained. "But while I was distracting him, he told me how he had set everything up. Your powers, Hudson's powers, Hudson's death day- everything was planned by him."

"What?" both men gasped, staring at me with wide eyes.

"In fact, Hudson, you weren't even supposed to die. That was a fake. He was just trying to get me the whole time," I said, trying to remember as much of the conversation as I could. "And the bird too..."

"But why would he want you?" Hudson asked.

"Because I'm just like him..."

"You're human though!" Hudson cried, looking surprised. "I know you are! You've almost died twice, and the doctors haven't said anything! And-"

"Chill, dude," Matt said, interrupting Hudson's babbling. "Obviously Emmery is human."

I nodded. "Besides, my vision went away after he died... so either he was lying about that, or I just had some weird power."

"He was probably lying," Hudson muttered, running a hand through his hair.

The teakettle suddenly started to whistle, and I jumped slightly. Hudson smirked in amusement as I quickly turned and walked back to the kitchen, my face red. I shut the heat off and pulled the teapot from the stovetop.

The Butterfly couldn't have been lying. He had been so sure at the time, so convinced. I furrowed my eyebrows, frowning. Or was he? Maybe he was just psycho and had delusions.

Maybe he didn't want to die alone.

I scolded myself. This man had tried to kill Hudson, Matt, and myself multiple times. Why was I feeling sorry for him? I shook my head violently. I wasn't feeling sorry for him... it was pity.

Pity for the killer who had lived his life as a monster.

I poured the hot water into three separate cups and placed a tea bag in each. Setting the cups on a platter, I returned to the living room where Hudson was now seated on the couch with Matt.

"So you don't remember anything after you passed out during the fire?" Hudson pressed, taking a cup of tea from the platter.

I shook my head, handing a cup to Matt. "No... but apparently I managed to get myself to the hospital."

"So that either means someone helped you there, or... something."

"If someone helped her there, why would they leave her on the sidewalk instead of bringing her in? Or they could have at least notified someone she was there," Matt pointed out, taking a sip of his tea. He made a face. "This is gross, what is it?"

I shrugged. "I don't know."

"Well it's gross."

I scowled. "Too bad."

"There was also no one else besides us at the mansion," Hudson commented, resting his chin on his hand. "And I don't think Willow sleep-walked there."

"No, I should be dead," I responded, knitting my eyebrows together. "I swear the ceiling caved in on me. And the fire too..."

The room stayed silent as we pondered our own thoughts. I took a seat on the chair, after removing Oliver. He meowed in protest, but ended up walking over to Hudson, jumping in his lap, and curling up. Hudson smiled at the cat and began to pet him.

"Hey, Willow..."

"Mm?"

"Where's that glass bird?"

I hesitated for a moment. The glass bird... there was something creepy about that thing. The Butterfly had said it was something to keep an eye on me... but it had helped much more than harmed.

"I don't know," I said slowly. "But while I had it the Butterfly's attacks were, like, cut down. Or rather, not as strong as they should have been. It was like it was protecting me."

Hudson smirked. "See? I told you it was a good luck charm."

"It's creepy though," I responded, sighing. "How it could teleport through my vision, and appear out of nowhere. It was like it had powers of it's own and it liked to help me..."

"Willow?"

I stared at the floor, my eyes wide. It wasn't possible. There was no way it was possible. The bird... It couldn't have teleported me to the hospital, right?

As soon as the thought ran through my mind, I laughed out loud at it. That was crazy. Why had I even thought that? Even if it did have powers, it was still a small glass bird. It was impossible to transport me to the hospital. Or teleport, or whatever.

"Are you okay?" Matt asked, watching me curiously.

I smirked and shook head. "Yeah, I was just thinking..."

Matt stretched and yawned. "Well don't think too much. Sometimes things aren't meant to be explained."

"You've got that right," I heard Hudson mutter.

"As they say, ignorance is bliss," I quoted, taking a sip of tea. I made a face, spitting it out into the cup. "This is gross!"

"Too bad," Matt mimicked, his voice a few octaves higher than usual.

I rolled my eyes at him. "Oh, shut up."

"Make me something else to drink," Matt demanded, putting the tea on the table, and pushing it away from him.

"I'm not a maid!"

"But I'm injured," he said with a puppy dog look.

I scowled at him for a minute, before standing up and grabbing his cup of tea. "Fine."

Matt grinned, watching as I strode off back to the kitchen. Moments after I entered, Hudson appeared, smirking.

"It's going to be so much fun having him here, right?"

I sighed, dumping the tea down the sink. "I could really use some alone time. It's been a hectic month."

"You don't want me here?" Hudson said with pout.

I laughed quietly. "No, I do. It's just... you know."

"No, I don't know," he responded with a grin.

"Hmph."

I turned my back on him, looking into my fridge for something to drink. I heard Hudson laugh to himself behind me. My eyes landed on a can of Coke, so I grabbed that. Matt would have to deal with it, or wait until I went out to buy more.

I turned around and walked straight into Hudson. My eyes widened at his sudden close proximity. He put a finger to my lips, pushing me against the fridge. He pulled his finger away, but his lips soon replaced it.

My eyes widened in shock at Hudson's sudden, but gentle, kiss. He pulled away after a split-second, grinning.

"With Matt here, we won't have time for this, so while we're in here now, I'm going to get in as many kisses as I can," he told me in quiet voice.

I blushed, adverting my eyes. "Uh, but-"

"Shh," Hudson hushed me, and I once again felt him press his lips against mine.

This time, he made it deeper, bringing his arm around me and pushing me closer to him. I responded to the kiss, still blushing like crazy. After a few moments, he pulled away again.

"I love you, Willow," he whispered in my ear.

"When are you going to start calling me Emmery?"

Hudson pulled away from me with a frown. "You know, the correct response is 'I love you too, Hudson'."

I rolled my eyes at his joke. "If were, uh, a couple... why don't you call me from my first name now?"

Hudson laughed. "Not in your dreams. You are, and will always be, my Willow."

I scowled at him. "Why?"

"Because, I don't want to be like everyone else and call you Emmery," he explained. "I want to be the one different one who calls you Willow."

"I'm sure other people will if-"

"I'll beat them up," Hudson interrupted nonchalantly.

I couldn't help the smile from slipping onto my face. I laughed, shaking my head. "You're unbelievable."

"But you love me."

"Yes, I love you," I responded, my smile growing.

This time I made the first move, and quickly gave him a peck on the lips. I blushed immediately when he smirked.

"I want a kiss, not a peck."

"Too embarrassing," I muttered, looking at the ground. "I can only do so much right now."

"I'll show you," Hudson said with a laugh, leaning forwards and kissing me again.

"Hey!" a voice suddenly shouted from the living room.

I pulled away from Hudson immediately, looking towards the kitchen door.

"It's too quiet in there!" Matt called. "What are you two doing?"

"N-nothing!" I shouted back, blushing once more.

"You better not be making out back there!"

Hudson had started laughing by now. My face was growing hotter and hotter as I attempted to deny Matt's accusation.

"We're not-"

"Where's my drink?" Matt complained, ignoring me. "I'm hungry too!"

I sighed, looking at the can of soda in my hand. Hudson was still chuckling to himself when I looked at him. He caught me staring and smirked.

"And you have to deal with this for a whole week."

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Hudson grinned, grabbing my hand in his.

"I don't know if I can survive," I said dramatically, walking back towards the living room.

Hudson laughed. "Willow, we've survived so much. Car crashes, fires, explosions. I highly doubt acting like a maid will kill you."

"I'm hungry!" Matt complained, louder this time.

I scowled. "You're right... Matt just might end up dying first."

We returned to the living room, Hudson chuckling to himself once more. Matt was staring at us with pursed lips. I handed him his Coke. He took it and looked it for a moment.

"I don't like coke."

A look of disbelief crossed my face and Hudson started laughing hard. It took all I had to not scream at him, or stab him for that matter. Matt caught sight of my expression and opened the Coke.

"Just kidding," he said sheepishly, taking a sip. "Mm, it's good. See? I like it."

I couldn't help but to smile at that. Matt returned my smile with his own crooked one. Hudson cleared his throat and I turned to him.

"Stop making eyes at each other."

Matt smirked, turning to Hudson now. "Why, jealous?"

"What? No!"

"Hmm, I'd be," Matt said, tapping his chin with a finger.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Hudson demanded, frowning.

"Nothing," Matt responded nonchalantly, waving his hand. "Forget I said anything."

"No, tell me what you meant!"

"No."

"Yes!"

"Nope, don't think so."

"You little," Hudson growled, narrowing his eyes at Matt.

I sighed, watching the boys with a weary expression. If this was how it was going to be every day, it was going to be a long week.

"Maybe Emmery is secretly in love with me?"

"Impossible," Hudson snorted.

"Well let's ask her-"

"I'm not," I responded simply, not bothering to wait for him to ask me directly. "Hudson, stop over-reacting."

"I'm not-" he started to protest, but I'm sure my look silenced him.

The two men stayed quiet for a moment and I relaxed. It wasn't actually bad if the two didn't bicker. I could easily survive the week.

"Feelings can change," Matt commented quietly.

"What?" Hudson responded, glaring at Matt.

I groaned. No, it was definitely going to be a long week.

Well, that's it! I know I suck at end stories, but don't hate D; I swear I tried my best! It's just soooo hard to end a story, you know? Nothing ever sounds good enough.

A lot of people have been asking about a sequel, and to quell your hopes before they raise to high, it's not going to happen. This story is the type of story that a sequel would ruin. I'm sorry! A sequel would be fun, but I have other stories I want to write, and I've spent enough time on this one. Yeah. And also, the scene in the beginning of the story was just a hook to drag you in, aha. (:

Thank you ALL so much for reading until the end! I love you guys! This story is my favorite, so you guys are definitely my favorite readers (:

Join my facebook group and keep an eye out for new stories! Or if you're fan, keep an eye for alerts. You guys can also check out my other stories ("A Proscriptive Relationship", "Believe Me, I'm Lying", and "Hidden In This School") if you're really bored, but they are a lot different... the closest one like this is probably APR since that story has a lot of action in it like this one. But yeah, that's it!

Thank you again! :D Bye-bye!
