:Darker Than Black: [Chapter: 20] //An Original Story//

I frowned when I shook the small bag of cat food. Silence. Oliver meowed and rubbed around m ankles. I squatted down and rubbed his back.

"Oli, sorry, but we seem to have run out of cat food," I told him, scooping him up into my arms.

He squirmed and clawed his way up to my shoulder, meowing loudly and swatting at my face. I picked him off my shoulder and placed him on the floor. He continued to meow as I went to the trash to throw away the bag.

I opened the fridge and peered in. After scanning it for a moment, I grimaced. There wasn't even food in the fridge. For Oliver, or for me. Oliver meowed again and I closed the door.

"I'm going to go to the store and get some food," I muttered, nudging Oliver out of my way.

I grabbed my jacket and put it on, heading out the door. I paused at the calendar. It was May 5th. That meant there was a sale at the grocery store today. Oliver meowed at me again as I opened the door.

"I'll be right back," I told him, shutting the door behind me.

I locked my door and started towards the stairs. Hudson's shiny BMW caught my attention. I chewed my lip and stared it. Taking a car would be a lot quicker than waking. And Oliver was hungry...

Sighing, I went to Hudson's door and knocked. When there was no answer, I knocked again. Still no answer. I began pounding on the door.

"Hudson! Can you hear me?" I shouted. The one day he wouldn't be home was the one day I actually needed a favor.

"Loud and clear," a reply came from behind me.

I whirled around to see Hudson carrying a large brown package. He grinned at me and set the box down. He put his hands in his pocket and looked at me curiously.

"You need something?"

"What's that?" I asked, pointing to the box.

"Nothing," he responded, shrugging.

I cocked my eyebrow. He stretched and leaned against the railing. "So... do you need something?"

I shifted my eyes to the ground, hesitating. Hudson had mentioned that he didn't like driving because he didn't like using the things his parents got him. I hadn't thought of that before I came. But I really needed a ride.

My stomach growled, and it reminded me of Oliver. No matter what, I needed to get to the grocery store. I looked back up at Hudson and kept my face straight.

"Could you... possibly... give me a ride to the grocery store?"

"No," Hudson responded right away.

I blinked at him, slightly surprised at his immediate refusal. "Why?"

Hudson laughed. "I was joking. Do you want to go now?"

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah."

"Follow me," Hudson ordered, pulling his hand out of his pocket with his keys clenched in his fist.

"What about the box?"

"It can stay there."

"Okay," I responded, following Hudson down to his car.

I got in on the passenger's side and put on my seatbelt. Hudson got in and, to my surprise, put on his seatbelt.

"Since when do you put on your seatbelt? I thought you didn't care about your safety since you can't die?"

Hudson smirked slightly. "I have my reasons..."

I frowned slightly, but let it go. Hudson started the car and pulled out of driveway. I relaxed into the black leather seats and turned on the radio. After searching for a few moments and finding nothing good, I shut it off.

Hudson looked over at me. "Are you a picky person?"

"About food and music, yes," I responded, turning to face him. "Keep your eyes on the road."

Hudson smiled and returned his attention to the road. After a few minutes, we arrived at the grocery store. Hudson parked and shut the car off.

"You can stay if you want," I told him, getting out of the car. "I'll be quick."

"Nah, I'll come," he responded, also getting out.

I waited for him to lock the car, but when he didn't, I didn't question him. It probably had something to do with his parents or something. Or maybe it didn't. Maybe he just forgot to lock it. I still didn't want to say anything just in case. I never knew what was going on in Hudson's head.

The grocery store sent a cold burst of air my way when I entered. Hudson followed me to get a basket. I went to get the cat food first.

Hudson started touching everything. And asking if I'd buy him stuff. In the back of my mind somewhere, I thought this was going to happen. But I didn't really think Hudson would do anything when there were people around.

"I'm going to put items in people's carts," he said with a snicker, grabbing a box of rice.

"No!" I cried, grabbing his jacket.

"Yep," he responded, easily pulling himself free from my grasp.

I scowled and grabbed his hand, using all my force to yank him closer to me. "Jeez, you're just like a kid."

He frowned, putting the rice back. "You're younger than me."

I kept a tight grasp on his hand as I continued my shopping. There was a sale on meat, so I took the opportunity to buy a lot of steak and chicken. Hudson watched me apprehensively.

"You're going to die early," he warned me.

"Why?" I asked, looking at him curiously.

"Red meat shortens your life."

I shrugged. "I like it though... and I don't eat it much. This will probably last awhile."

Hudson shrugged. "I'm just saying. You can do what you want?"

"Excuse me," an old woman's voice from behind us called. "The cute couple by the meat!"

I turned my head to look for the people that woman was addressing and realized that there was no one besides Hudson and I. I also realized that I was still holding Hudson's hand. I blushed when I realized she was talking to us.

Hudson turned around and smiled at her. "Us?"

"Yeah. Would you like to try a free sample of our new chicken with spice? Since you're a couple, you can have a bigger portion," she tempted, a smile on her face. "It's really good."

I felt my face growing redder. "Oh, we're not-"

"Sure! Let's go, 'honey'."

I stared at Hudson. "Hudson we're not-"

"It's free food," he interrupted again, tugging me over to the woman.

She smiled at us, and handed Hudson the sample of chicken. Hudson immediately ripped off a piece and popped it into his mouth.

"How is it, hun?" the old woman asked.

"Awesome!" Hudson responded. "Try it, Willow."

"I don't know," I responded, looking at it. "I don't really like trying new-"

I was cut off once again by Hudson quickly putting a piece of chicken in my mouth while I was talking. I glared at him slightly, but still ate the chicken. It was actually delicious.

"What do you think?" Hudson and the lady asked together.

I blushed and looked at the floor. "It's g-good..."

The old lady chuckled. "What a cute girl."

"Yep," Hudson responded. "She's very cute."

I blushed again and kicked Hudson's leg. Was he trying to embarrass me? The old lady chuckled again.

"I hope all goes well with you two in the future," she said with another smile. "Would you like some chicken?"

I almost laughed. Was she flattering us just so we would buy some chicken? I smiled and shook my head, holding in my laughter.

"Yeah, I'll buy some," I told her.

She nodded and handed me the chicken. I took it from her and put it in the basket. Hudson took the basket from me before I could refuse.

"I've got it," he said when I started to protest.

We went to the check out line and I started placing the groceries on the counter. Hudson's phone rang and he answered it. He talked for about a minute and then hung up.

"Shoot," he muttered. "Sorry, Willow. But I have to run down the street for one minute, okay? Is that alright?"

I nodded. "Yeah. I'll meet you outside."

Hudson nodded and jogged out of the store. I kept my curiosity to myself, even though I was dying of it. He was such a mysterious person. When my groceries were bagged I grabbed them and headed outside. Hudson's car was gone.

I stared at the space for a moment, puzzled. I thought he was just going down the street? I sighed and went to the corner of the grocery store, sitting on the curb. Five minutes passed and Hudson still didn't show.

For a second I thought he had ditched me. I quickly shook the idea out of my head. There was no way.

Suddenly I heard a twig snap behind me. Before I could turn, two hands were over my eyes.

"Guess who?"

For a split second I thought it was Hudson. Then I realized that the voice was definitely not Hudson's.
