:Darker Than Black: [Chapter: 14] //An Original Story//
Hudson's POV
I sat up with a jolt, my eyes shooting open, my heart racing. When I realized I was on a couch, it started to slow down. I had only dreamed that I was falling. Wait, dreamed? When had I fallen asleep? I pulled out my cell phone and checked the time. Five hours had passed.
I put my phone away and my stomach growled.
"Willow, I'm hungry," I moaned, staying on the couch. "Make me some food."
No reply came and I frowned.
How typical of her not to respond to my demands.
"Okay, Willow, will you please make me something to eat?"
Still no reply. I frowned deeper. What was she doing?
"Willow, are you trying to hide?" I called, smiling slightly.
I swung my legs of the couch and stood up. I stretched and popped my head into the kitchen. There was no sign of Emmery. I walked towards her bedroom and looked inside. No Emmery. I checked in the bathroom, the spare room, the hallways, even the closets, but I still couldn't find her.
The smile was long gone from my face now. I pulled out my cell phone again and called hers. It went straight to voicemail. I closed my phone and shoved it back into my pocket. This wasn't funny anymore. I growled in impatience and went back into the living room. I bent down to pick up the remote and noticed there was a note attached to it.
I scanned it quickly. Emmery had gone grocery shopping. But on the note it said she would be gone an hour and a half at tops, and according to the time on the paper it ha been a good four hours. I crumpled up the note and tossed it to the ground.
What could have happened? Worst-case scenarios ran through my head and I had to shake them away. Kidnap, murder, and accidents- all those things seemed impossible. I looked out the window to her apartment. It was raining. I swallowed nervously.
"That girl," I muttered, heading towards the door. "I hate feeling worried."
I locked her apartment behind me and nearly ran to mine. I opened the door and went over to my desk to get my keys. I swiped them with my hand, but they fell out of my hand. I scowled and bent down to pick them up. And man, how lucy that was, otherwise I would have never noticed the new images on my prediction photographs.
"Willow?" I gasped, staring at the photos.
I couldn't tell. It looked like her, but the image was hazy. The person in the picture was covered with burns. I clenched my teeth. Another photograph showed a huge building on fire. My last photo showed that prediction prosecutor in front of the burning building.
Did that bastard have something to do with Emmery's disappearance? I grabbed the photos and my keys and practically ran out of my apartment to my car. I slid in the driver's side and started it quickly, peeling out of the apartment parking lot. I sped down the street. But no matter how fast I drove there was still one problem.
I had no idea where I was going.
Whenever I got visions, Emmery would usually get them and help me. I scowled to myself. I had become to dependent on her, and look what happened. She was in danger.
"Shit!" I swore, slamming on the breaks as some idiot walked out into the street. The guy flipped me off so I blared my horn at him.
As soon as he was out of my way, I slammed on the gas pedal, flying past him. Those were the kind of people I hated the most. Or the kind of people that would kidnap girls and try to kill them and do who knows what with them.
I shook my head. I had to keep cool; otherwise I wouldn't be able to save Emmery. The only buildings I knew about were the old abandoned ones on the other side of town. But it would take at least half an hour to get there, and I had no idea when the fire would start.
My knuckles were white against the steering wheel. What if I didn't make it in time? Or what if I got the wrong buildings? I definitely wouldn't have enough time to go back and find another set of buildings. I pressed the gas pedal to the floor.
Emmery's POV
"Matt!" I screamed, angry and frustrated, yanking at my chains. "Help me!"
The roar of the fire that was growing closer to me every second was my only reply. I jerked my body forward, trying to break out. I hissed as the hot metal dug into my skin. Maybe if I twisted my body, the heat would make the metal on the chains softer and it would break.
I began to twist in the circle. With my back to the approaching fire, it gave me a chance to slightly cool off my front. I twisted back and winced at the difference in heat. I turned again, and grunted in pain. The metal was now beginning to dig into my skin.
I attempted to untangle my wrists but got them caught on the glass dove necklace. I scowled. Hudson had said that was supposed to be a good luck charm. Now look where it had gotten me.
The fire had spread to the ceiling now. I panted, sweating profusely. The smoke making me choke now and again. This really was one of the worst ways to die. A loud crash made me jump. Behind me, a part of the wall had collapsed. I tried to break from my chains again, but they held fast.
My necklace got a little tighter around my throat so I stopped attempting to break the chains. If I did, chances were that I would end up choking myself somehow. I'd rather not be choking as I burned to death.
Suddenly I got dizzy and my feet gave out from under me. I cried out a little at the sudden tug from my wrists, making my necklace even tighter. After the wave of dizziness passed, I forced myself to my feet. My vision was blurry. I couldn't tell if it was do to the haze of the smoke, or the heats affects on me.
That's when it really hit me. I was going to die. My heart dropped and tears sprung to my eyes. But none of them spilled down my face. It was too hot. I could feel my skin growing hotter by the second. My vision was going, even my hearing.
I shut my eyes for a moment. The heat actually was beginning to feel comfortable. Maybe if I just dozed off, it wouldn't be such a painful death. I snapped myself back to reality. One thing I could not do was fall asleep.
Wasn't Hudson supposed to be here? Was Matt lying? Why wasn't Hudson here to save me? I sighed as I thought that. Why couldn't I do something for myself? Why was I the one always put in these difficult positions? I hated to rely on Hudson. But it was different this time. In order to survive he'd have to magically appear now. And that was impossible.
There was a loud crash behind me. I didn't bother looking. It was probably just another part of the wall, or part of the ceiling, falling down. I lowered my head. I should have felt lucky for even having as much time as I did. If the fire had spread faster, I would have been dead a good ten minutes ago.
"Hudson, you jerk," I muttered, my eyes beginning to water over again. "Come save me!"
Something shiny and silver entered my field of vision. And in a few seconds my left arm was free from chains. The silver thing vanished and appeared on my other side. I turned my head with wide-eyes.
"Hudson!" I cried, staring at him in amazement.
I than started coughing and Hudson quickly pulled back the knife he was holding, snapping the last chain.
As I felt the chain leaving, I also felt my necklace falling. Hudson quickly grabbed my hand and began tugging me towards him.
"Wait," I tried to say, but could barely managing a sound through my coughing.
I leaned down to grab the little glass bird that had fallen, but Hudson tugged me forcibly.
"Willow, we've got to go!"
He tugged me again and I ripped my hand out of his, falling forwards onto the ground. I scrambled towards the bird and grabbed it, holding it tightly in a closed fist.
"Willow! Roll!" Hudson shouted, looking panicked.
I looked up just to see a huge ball of fire falling towards me. I flung myself to the side just in time as the piece of ceiling fell. Hudson was by my side in seconds, lifting me up and dragging me towards the back of the room.
I followed him to a window. He pushed me out first. I clung to the edge of the abandoned building, looking down at the ground a good three stories below. I froze on the ledge, my eyes shut tight. Heights weren't my thing.
"Go, Willow," Hudson urged, pushing me forwards.
I didn't open my eyes, but did as Hudson said and in about five minutes a hand was on my shoulder, meaning for me to stop. I did and I felt Hudson take my hand.
"Don't open your eyes, and hold your breath," he said.
Before I could ask why, he pulled me off the ledge. I screamed as I felt nothing beneath my feet and began to fall. I shut my mouth quickly though, remembering what he said. I hit water, and was submerged. I didn't want to resurface. The cool water was a huge improvement to the burning building.
When I did resurface, I was gasping for breath, paddling like a madman. Hudson grabbed me and began dragging me towards the riverbank. I climbed out of the river by myself and collapsed, breathing heavily.
"Not yet, Willow, we have to get to the car," Hudson told me, pulling me from the ground.
"I'm tired," I complained, but allowed myself to be towed by him.
Hudson laughed. "Yeah, well you're going to have to be tired for awhile. We need to get out of here before the cops come, and than you have to explain to me what happened tonight before I go crazy. But I think first we should go to the hospital to treat your burns."
I groaned. I hated hospitals. Hudson's smile faded, and a serious look appeared on his face. For some reason, it scared me. It gave off a nostalgic feeling. And not a good one. He was too calm for what happened.
"Hudson?"
"Hm?" he responded, turning around to me.
"Um, nothing..."
Hudson shrugged and turned forwards again. I stayed silent. There was definitely something strange about him. And I had a feeling something bad was about to happen.
