Dark Skies- Book #2 in Sunrise
Chapter 1
Dewstorm gazed down lovingly at her newborn kits, her flanks still heaving. Adderjaw, Moonrise, and Fernsong had left the den now, telling Frostfang to keep an eye on her. Frostfang had four kits of her own, now. A pure white tom with green eyes that she had named Clearkit, a light yellow she-cat with light, fiery eyes she had named Goldenkit, a light brown tom with blue eyes named Hawkkit, and another she-cat with a brown and white patched pelt with amber eyes named Sparkkit.
As any queen with kits of her own would, Dewstorm couldn't help but think that her kits were, secretly, much more perfect, and her chest swelled with pride. Clearkit put his paws on Frostfang's back, looking at Dewstorm's kits. "Mom, why can't we play with them?" he pleaded. "They're newborns! You'll crumple them with a blow of a paw!" With that reminder, Dewstorm drew her kits nearer with a swoop of her tail. Her plain white kit, a tom, mewed pitifully and nuzzled her leg, urging it out of the way. The other two kits joined in, perhaps hoping that together, they could move her leg.
Dewstorm shifted her hind leg, and they all eagerly nuzzled at her belly fur. The entrance rattled, and Starlight ducked in. He purred with relief as he saw his beautiful children. He licked Dewstorm on the head. "Hello, my love." He meowed. He lay down next to her, staring lovingly at his kits. "They're beautiful." He murmured. The kits looked up and meowed at him, somehow knowing that he was their father. Starlight leaned his head in towards his kits. "Hello," he whispered to them. The light brown tom hooked his claws onto his muzzle, meowing at him louder. Starlight laughed softly and gently unhooked the kits' claws.
Dewstorm felt a stirring in her chest but pushed it away. She looked at the light gray she-cat and grinned. "Are we going to name them?" Starlight asked finally, his tail wrapped around Dewstorm. "Oh, yes, of course!" her pelt heated up. She looked at the white tom, staring right into his bright green eyes. "Hello, Cloudkit." She whispered. Starlight looked at the light gray she-cat, his eyes sparkling. "She looks like a... Jadekit." He said. Dewstorm loved the name. Something in her tingled, and she paused.
Something seized her chest, and she coughed. It made her whole body jerk, and her heart began beating rapidly. She leaned over in her nest, gasping for a breath. She couldn't breathe, and she stared desperately at Starlight. He bolted up, his head jerking from Dewstorm to the entrance. He seemed to choose the help, because he ran as fast he could from the den. Frostfang was up, her kits meowing at her in protest. "Dewstorm, Dewstorm!" She shouted, standing a tail-length from her as she jerked back and forth in her nest.
She gasped for breath, fighting the pain in her chest, crying out loud. All three medicine cats rushed in, Moonrise ushered Cloudkit, Jadekit, and the light brown one out of the den. Fernsong held Dewstorm around, and Starlight rushed in with a thick stick in his jaws. Dewstorm fought against the pain, gratefully biting down on the stick. Her teeth dug into the stick to the point where her gums touched it. She couldn't bare the pain any longer, and she let the world slip away, her last sight the desperate look of Starlight, his eyes clouded with fear and pain, realizing that he was going to lose her no matter how hard the medicine cats tried.
The world went black around her, and everything went away, including her family. She felt light, and a beam of golden light filtered through a crack. Out stepped Weedtail, his pelt shining with stars. "Dad!" She exclaimed, her heart lifting with the sight of him. His tail lifted with delight, and Dewstorm realized that her paws were starry, too. "Welcome to StarClan." He purred.
Wait, StarClan? She gasped. "I'm dead? No, no, no, I just received the best gifts in my life, and I'm leaving it all behind?" Weedtail's tail drooped. "Well, yes. But you can watch them grow up here, just like I watched you!" He tried to sound optimistic, and her heart lifted as a tiny figure sprinted from nowhere, tail streaming from behind. "Skykit!" She called, and Skykit let out a tiny yelp of delight.
Skykit crashed into her, and Hopewhisker emerged from the horizon, "Dewstorm!" He called, and he ran quicker, tumbling her over when he arrived. "Isn't it strange how we both died at the same age?" He asked, and with a sharp look from Weedtail, he realized that he had grown way too casual about his death, as all StarClan members do, and Dewstorm hadn't reached that point yet.
Weedtail pulled her away from her family, leading her towards a pool. "Look in and concentrate on the nursery." He instructed her, and Dewstorm hesitantly gazed into it. The pool glimmered, and an image appeared, clouded and blurred. It was the medicine den. Starlight was in the nursery, his chin on Dewstorm's dead body. Her three kits pressed to her belly fur, whining. Her heart ached for him, and she wished she could jump into the pool and go back.
"They'll be here some day, but your life is in StarClan now." Weedtail meowed gently, his tail stroked Dewstorm's back. She was sobbing.
