Chapter 45
"Told you not to hang around with her," Lizzie said as she flipped through the pages of Hope's grimoires. "Hope Mikaelson is evil. This is on you, really."
Lizzie gnawed on her lip as she read on for a few more minutes. There was nothing helpful in it.
"You know ... I actually think there's still some good inside her. Buried deep." Lizzie pulled a face. "Very, very deep."
Lizzie considered not explaining at all. It wasn't like MG could hear her anyways. With him hanging out with Hope, she was never going to tell him for real now.
"She felt jealous the other day. When I said I was ... well, I lied and said I was going on a date with you. The day I stood you up - on accident! But she felt jealous. An emotion. She's not too far gone -"
"Are you saying Hope Mikaelson is close to turning her humanity back on?"
Lizzie jumped at the sound of Kaleb's voice in the doorway, throwing the grimoire out of her lap guiltily.
"Kaleb!" she hissed as she jumped to her feet. "You're not supposed to be in here!"
"What the hell happened to MG?" Kaleb demanded, speeding to his best friend's side.
"Well if I knew that, I wouldn't be trying to figure it out with Hope's overly complex grimoires." Lizzie motioned to the frustrating books on the floor.
"See, this is why I told you to stay far away from that girl, MG," Kaleb sighed.
Lizzie settled back onto the floor. "I already gave him that speech." She looked up at Kaleb, wondering for a second. "Do you want to help me search for a solution?"
To her surprise, Kaleb sat on the floor with her and they passed grimoires back and forth silently for a long while. Eventually, Kaleb gave up on trying to understand witch business and just stared at MG's still body.
"Have you ever done a head dive before?" Kaleb asked.
"No." Lizzie knew it was a difficult piece of magic that required a powerful witch and vampire, but that was about it. The Salvatore School didn't really teach things like that. It was too dangerous, and it could be used for evil.
"I think if we got inside his head ... we stand a good chance of figuring out what's wrong with him. And maybe even bringing him back."
"How do we do it?"
"I'll show you how, but first ... you gotta promise me that when we get him back, we do everything we can to keep him away from Hope." Kaleb's face was stoic. He wasn't budging on this one demand. This was his best friend Hope put in danger. He couldn't let it happen again.
Lizzie looked at MG's face. It was an easy choice. She would do anything to bring MG back and to never see him like this again. "Yeah, of course."
"Good. They've been ripping up the town together, killing people left and right, and it's tearing MG up inside. He can't handle the guilt."
Time seemed to slow down for Lizzie. Her eyes moved in slow motion as she looked back at Kaleb. "What?"
"What?"
"Did you just say Hope and MG have been killing together?"
"Yeah, a couple times a week. I keep telling him not to go, but Hope always convinces him ..."
Lizzie tuned out the rest of what Kaleb was saying. There was no way MG was the person she was looking for. She was going to ask MG for suspects. She had never even considered that he could be Hope's partner in crime.
