Chapter 36

"What are you thinking about?" Landon asked quietly.

Josie smiled at how sleepy his voice sounded, burying her face deeper in his arm and closing her eyes against the bright sunlight. She answered honestly. "You."

"Me?" Landon's face broke out in a huge grin and he sat up. Josie followed him with her eyes.

"Yes, you."

Landon smiled wider. "What about me?"

"No." Josie giggled and buried her face in his pillow, too embarrassed to say. Her cheeks burned.

"Tell me!"

Josie shook her head, and Landon smoothed the hair that the movement tousled. He brought his hand down to hold the side of her face, soaking up every second of her glowing face. He wanted to commit every detail of her laughing face to memory.

"What?" she asked, biting on her lower lip.

"It's just nice to see you happy again." Landon's thumb brushed over her cheek. "It's been a while."

"Since ... Hope."

"Yeah."

Josie sat up, all traces of happiness or laughter disappearing from her eyes. "Can you keep a secret?"

"Of course."

"I found out ..." Josie looked around the room like she would find someone hiding in the shadows, spying on her. "... someone here killed her."

"Here at the Salvatore School?" Landon's eyebrows rose. Josie nodded. Landon didn't understand. "Who would do that?"

"That's what I'm trying to figure out." Josie buried her face in her hands, thinking of her list. She really needed to cross Landon's name. She really needed to cross a lot of names off.

Landon rubbed a hand up and down her back. "Don't worry about it today. Today is all about you."

"What?" Josie turned, eyebrows furrowed, to look at Landon. She was forgetting something. She knew it.

"It's the first day of Miss Mystic Falls. You didn't forget, did you?"

"Of course not." Josie smiled through the lie. "I just didn't think it was all about me."

Landon kissed her quickly before he rolled out of bed. "The next three days are all about you as far as I'm concerned."

"No pressure or anything."

"You wanted pressure?" Landon turned back, eyes sparkling mischievously.

Josie's eyes and smile widened as she realized what was coming next. "No - no!"

"Too late." Landon was already wrapping his arms around her and crushing her into the mattress with the weight of his hug. "How's this for pressure?"

Josie's arms stuck out just enough to circle him, barely able to breathe. "Perfect."
