Chapter 28
Josie sat in the library, running her thumbnail between her teeth as she thought. There were books stacked around her station but they were only there to stop any curious eyes from looking at the notebook she had out with a long list of names. Every single student and every single staff member was listed in her neat handwriting.
She slowly drew a line through her own name. She hadn't killed Hope. She drew a line through Lizzie's name. Her sister hadn't either. She skipped over to the staff side and drew a line through her father's name. He hadn't killed Hope either. Even with three down, there were still a lot more names to go.
"Boo!"
Josie threw up her hands, scrambling to close the notebook. "That isn't funny, Penelope!"
She narrowed her eyes at the cackling witch who had snuck up on the other side of the table to scare her.
"Writing in your diary?" Penelope hopped up on the table, smoothing her skirt out. "About a certain someone? Maybe a brunette witch with deep soulful eyes -"
Josie's cheeks burned. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You don't remember the poem you wrote me?" Penelope crinkled her nose. "I'm sure I still have it somewhere. 'A smile that shines like the sun -'"
"Okay, Penelope!" Josie said quickly. "What do you want?"
"Maybe I just came to annoy you."
"Mission accomplished."Josie stacked her things and slid them into her bag.
"Hey ..." Penelope slid off the table to follow her.
"I'm just not interested, Pen." Josie avoided looking at the witch keeping pace with her.
"Interested in what?"
"In you." Josie quickly added, "Romantically."
"I didn't say I wanted you back," Penelope scoffed. That got Josie's attention enough to make her look over.
"What?"
"I didn't say I wanted you back," Penelope repeated. "I said I came here to annoy you."
"Oh." Josie blinked a few times. "Well, good." She nodded to herself. "Because I'm with Landon now. You know that."
"I do know that."
Josie snuck a glance at the other witch. She was being surprisingly - and unnaturally - agreeable. Penelope was never one to respect her relationship with Landon.
"So how is Landon?" Penelope asked.
"He's good."
"Have a fun movie night?"
Josie stopped in her tracks. "How did you know about that?"
"Well you had it in the middle of the woods ..." Penelope eyed her strangely. "Was it supposed to be a secret?"
"You're spying on me now?" Josie's voice rose.
"I'm not spying on you," Penelope said defensively. "I was making deliveries, and I saw you."
Josie shook her head. "I can't believe you. Here I thought you might actually be starting to respect my boundaries ..." She took off down the hallway before Penelope could say anything else.
