Chapter 19
Lizzie laid with her face pressed into her pillow. She hadn’t moved from her bed since Hope left her, too many emotions bouncing around inside of her.
Disgusted that she had slept with a murderer yet again, angry that she had let herself do it, scared that she would do it the next time too, satisfied that she had done something she wanted, happy that Hope had come to her, guilty that she never went and talked to MG, regretful that she never even asked Hope for her new partner's identity. All the emotions rolled and clunked around inside her body at once.
The door opened, and Lizzie didn’t turn around as she spoke.
“You’re back late.” She sighed and pushed herself through the painful lie. “Your date with Hope lasted that long?”
Josie flopped down on her bed. “Wasn’t a date. Trust me. She made that very clear.” She gave a loud sigh. “And it did not last long. It barely lasted long enough for me to sit. I went for a walk afterwards, to clear my head. So, it was decidedly not good.”
Well that explained why Hope had showed up so eagerly. “I’m sorry, Jo.” She was sorry, for more than just the way her date - no, meet up - with Hope had gone.
“I’m not.” Josie sat up suddenly. “I knew how this would turn out. She’s a vampire with her humanity turned off. She’s not the same Hope we knew.”
Lizzie swallowed heavily. “Humanity can be turned back on.”
“Yeah, but she has to want to.” Josie tossed her head and started getting ready for her movie night with Landon. “And she seems perfectly content to just not care. It’s hopeless.”
“You know the good news then?” Lizzie asked.
Josie looked at her, an earring halfway through her ear, obviously lost on what the good part of losing their friend to the darkness was.
“You’ve done everything you can. You can’t magically make her turn it back on. There’s nothing more you can do except move on,” Lizzie said softly, hoping her sister would feel the same way.
“I know.”
Lizzie closed her eyes. So Josie didn’t feel the same way.
