Chapter 16

“Come on, Dad,” Lizzie whined. “I’m not gonna tell Josie, I promise.”
“I’m not just worried about Josie,” Alaric said firmly. “I’m worried about you too. Neither of you girls needs to be involved in a murder investigation in any way.”
“Please,” Lizzie scoffed and rolled her eyes. “You created me, and you raised me. You know I’m going to find out either way. The less dangerous way would be for you to just tell me. You know, open and honest communication, like Emma’s been saying in family therapy.”
“Open and honest communication does not mean I have to tell you every detail you want to know. It means I tell you it’s a murder investigation instead of saying nothing’s going on, and then you respect it.”
Lizzie tilted her head and crossed her arms.
“You know what you can help me with?” Alaric sat on the edge of his desk and folded his hands. “Hope has a new partner in crime.”
Lizzie tried to ignore the jealousy rising in her chest at the mention of Hope and someone else. She knew Hope had plenty of “someone else”s. No sense in getting riled up at the mention of her partnered up with someone else - for murder of all things.
“You and MG used to be close. He’s a good guy and I trust him. See if he knows who it is, if he’s heard or seen anything around the Academy.”
“I can help you with a murder investigation by gossiping?” Lizzie looked doubtful.
“Yes. That’s one of two things you can do to help me.”
“What’s the other?”
Alaric’s face was serious. “Stay far away from Hope and anything to do with the Mikaelson Academy.”
Lizzie’s stomach turned guiltily as she remembered her and Hope just two days ago. “Can do, Dad. I’ll get you the inside scoop.”
