Chapter 1
Fog hung over Mystic Falls, filling the spaces between the trees and the houses.
It made the silhouette sauntering down the road even harder to see than on a normal, dark night. Headlights appeared in the distance along with the faint hum on an engine.
Hope smiled, the blood in the corner of her lips showing itself when she did. Her heels sounded off the wet pavement as she headed towards the oncoming bus, unwavering.
When it got close enough for her to see, sparks flew onto the asphalt, the bus flipping onto its side and skidding along the road to come to a stop mere inches from the toes of her shoes.
She closed her eyes, tilting her head back and smelling the fresh blood in the air. Groans and confused cries came from the passengers of the flipped bus.
The dark veins under her eyes appeared, fangs extending from her gums. The hunger was strong enough to be painful. She lunged forward -
Lizzie and Josie both shot up in unison, their loud gasps echoing off the walls of their dorm. They turned to look at each other, sweat running down their foreheads and faces red.
Lizzie slid her blankets off, hopping through the small space between their beds and under Josie’s blankets.
Lizzie looked over at her twin. “Do you think -”
“It’s probably happening right now,” Josie said. It was almost sunrise, after all, and it was still dark when Hope attacked.
“What if it’s not?”
“Then who’s gonna stop her?”
That truth hung in the air between them heavily: no one.
No one was going to stop Hope Mikaelson from making a midnight dinner out of a bus full of people.
