Bittersweet

She shot a look to Hange, then back at Armin, his eyes following her gaze waiting for a response. He read her book too.

"That's interesting," she responded, almost inaudibly, physically responding with a smile. "Are you almost finished the book?" she added, hoping to hear a response telling her that at the end of the book she doesn't spontaneously die or have a horrible ending, like having no boyfriend, which she felt was her current situation.

"No, I've only actually just started," he politely replied. "Captain Levi just gave me the book a few days ago."

Her heart sank, Levi was definitely mad at her. Her eyes started to tear up and a lump in her throat was forming. "Why did he give it to you?" she asked, trying to suppress her shaking voice. "I mean, it's weird that he would just randomly give the book to anyone. He doesn't seem like the type to give gifts." she added, trying to save face.

"He said that he was getting bored with it, and that I was the one person he knew who liked to read, so... yeah," he pursed his lips.

She didn't reply, she was unaware she was just staring at him. "Bored" The word rang through her head, trying to fathom anything. She could feel the taps on her eyes start to break and erupt with tears.

"Okay," Hange interrupted clasping her hands, taking into account the uncomfortable, and sad silence the room was emitting. "Let's get to work."

---

"(y/n), I'll see you after dinner in my lab, okay?" Hange said as they both walked out of her office. "We need to talk about a lot of things," she patted her back.

"Yeah," she replied, "and please, don't tell Levi I'm here just yet."

"I wont." They parted ways as they walked into the mess hall. She decided that she wouldn't sit where Levi sat, which would be where Hange probably sat, since her sudden appearance would confuse and even infuriate him.

"(y/n)! Over here!" Jean called out, waving to her, sitting on the left side of the mess hall. She rushed over, hoping that Levi would not step in and see her.

"Thanks," she said as she sat down beside him and set her tray down, hoping to conceal her face from being seen. Not long after, the blond boy came over to greet them and sit at the table adjacent to theirs.

"Hey, (y/n), hey Jean," Her name rang in his voice he greeted, being amused with how she had the same name as a character in a book.

"Hey," both her and Jean responded in unison, Jean giving him a friendly smile.

Many people came by, greeting each other and asking each other how their day went and complain. She truly felt alone at this moment; she felt like an outsider, considering the fact that she just slipped into the Scout Regiment without prior training.

"How was your day, (y/n)?" Jean asked, taking her away from her thoughts. She played with her food for a while, thinking of a response. Her day wasn't entirely horrible, but it wasn't appropriate to say that it was good as well. However, if she did weigh the good and the bad out, she could say that the bad outweighed the good. Now that she thought about it, it wasn't a good day at all- except for the fact that she met Armin and reunited with Hange- it was completely atrocious.

"It was good," she replied, despite what her inner thoughts held. "How was yours?" she wanted to avoid the topic off of her as much as she could.

"It was fine," he flatly replied, as if he actually had a shitty day in contrast to what he said. "It was just full of cleaning. You know, up to Captain's standards," he looked away and onto the door of the mess hall. "Speaking of the devil." he nodded his head and she followed- there entering through the door was Levi. "Man, it's been so stressful with him around while you're cleaning. Especially this past week when he's been mad like there is no tomorrow." he took a bite out of his bread.

Her eyes followed Levi walking into the hall, same stupid stoic face, same stupid glares; she missed it all. She wanted to approach him, give him an embrace, but at the same time she wanted to push him and slap him across his face for just getting over her and leaving without notice like she wasn't even important.

"Hey!" a boy with a semi-bald haircut startled her away from her gaze- Connie Springer- followed by a slightly taller girl with brown hair tied to a ponytail- Sasha Braus.

"Hey guys," Jean greeted as Connie set his tray down infront of them. "This is (y/n), she's new." he gestured.

"Hey, I'm Sasha, this is Connie," she pointed her hand towards Connie. Connie waved at her.

"I didn't know they were already recruiting new cadets," Connie added, making her panic. He was correct, she did show up at an unconventional time of the year. She quickly had to lie. "...I was personally taken by Squad Leader Hange Zöe." her ears felt like they were burning- she was screwed. Her position would be compromised. There was no way they would believe she came from a book.

"What?!" Connie blurted, his voice cracking, flabbergasted by what she just said. He earned a few looks from other soldiers. "So you're that good at combat?" Connie was amused, Jean and Sasha also took interest.

"Heh.." she never used to describe anything with it, but if she were to describe her position, it would be that she was between a rock and a very hard place. "N-not really... Hange is- she's my cousin. Sort of. And I told her I wanted to be part of the Scouts... so she's the one training me, yeah." She held her breath hoping they would buy the story.

"Ohh," they all responded in unison.

"If you want, you can train with me," Jean suggested, "I don't mean to be cocky, but I was top ten in the 104th trainees squad, so I can train you." he grinned. Connie rolled his eyes, grunting to show his blatant annoyance.

"Sure thing," she responded.

---

"Come in," she opened the door and saw Hange writing on her notebook, her ideas spilling out. "(y/n)! Right, I wanted to speak with you."

She sat in the seat by her desk which was grotesquely messy, piles of papers laid, more than the amount she had before dinner. "What's up, Hange?"

"Okay, well first of all, I think you might already know about the whole transportation between our worlds, or settings as I'd like to call it. Uhm," she started wiggling her hand, getting her scattered thoughts together. "I left you the note and the key so you can settle things with Levi- he's been really distracted and much harder on the cadets- it's concerning- I've tried to help him and get him to talk about his problems but I know that you're the only one who can solve it."

This was almost impossible and she knew it. She knew that the moment he saw her, he would turn the other way and get Hange to force her to leave.

"I know you're apprehensive, but he's gone haywire since we left. We need him, (y/n). He's the strongest fighter we have and we can't afford him to be reckless." she added.

"I.." she thought for a while, it was now or never. It could only really turn out two ways; good or bad. If it turned out bad, she would just move on- or at least try to. Besides, all she would really have to do is forget anything happened and stop reading the book forever. "...I'll do it. Tomorrow. After dinner." she rubbed her head, trying to fend the stress off.

"Alright. But don't stress about it too much. Levi has a soft side too, I know you two will resolve it." she reassured her again.

"I know." she nodded, playing with her shirt.

"By the way, what did you tell people when they asked you where you were from?"

"I told them you were my cousin, and that you offered to personally train me because I was interested in joining the Survey Corps." she looked at Hange for an approval of her lie.

Hange chuckled, "Wouldn't have been able to make a better lie, you're just like a real cousin. Welcome to the family."

She responded with a smile, unable to laugh considering her current situation. But still, she had gotten significantly close to Hange, as if they were long lost siblings.

"Well, I hate to kick my own cousin out," Hange stretched out and yawned, "But I'm sleepy and I'm sure you are too, so get out of here I need my beauty sleep. Sorry for calling you out here only to talk for five minutes, but I'm really tired."

She chuckled and got up from her seat, "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

She got up from her seat and walked towards the door. She heard a gentle slam as she placed her hand on the cold handle of the door. She looked back at Hange. "Is everything good?"

Hange had crashed on her desk, fast asleep.

---

That morning, she was asked to mop the floors of the building by Jean. There haven't been many cases of titan attacks anywhere and the next expedition was to come in the next few weeks. All their days were occupied with training, studying the formation, and cleaning. Luckily for her, she'd only felt the labour for one day.

"No, (y/n) you're not doing it right," Jean approached her. "Here, it's like this." He wrapped his arms around her, demonstrating how to mop the floor. He moved the mop while she held onto it with limp hands, allowing him to guide them.

Is he hitting on me? she stood still, still being caged inside his arms.

"Jean, it's okay, I can do this myself." she took control of the mop.

"Kirschtein, I'm here to check on your-" a familiar voice called out from the door. Levi. She turned around and looked at him.

"Captain Levi," Jean quickly saluted, quickly letting go if the mop and allowing her to take hold of it. He stood there by the door, his face still stoic. She held every urge to run up to him and apologize, cry in his arms and let him comfort her.

Fuck, now she knew that Levi was pissed off at her for having been seen in that postition with Jean.

"(l/n), my office in five minutes. Kirschtein, I didn't authorize you to be helped by another soldier, did I not?" he snapped at him.

"No, sir." he looked down onto the floor, avoiding his deathly glare.

"Look at me when you're fucking talking to me, soldier." Levi condescendingly replied. "You're doing the dishes tonight."

"It was my fault, Le- Captain Levi. I asked if I could help him." she stepped in. She felt mainly responsible for Levi's rambunctious attitude. "I'll do the dishes. Don't punish him."

"I did not ask you to speak, (l/n)." Levi shot a look at her. "Office. Now." he stormed out.
