Chapter 45
A/N: Sorry to keep you waiting. Unfortunately, I hurt my left shoulder when I was careless while doing some household chores. It took some time to heal and then I had a few other things come up that kept me from writing.
Zhan was sitting on the porch of his parents' house in the morning, eating a yogurt. He was alone, enjoying the fresh air and the sunshine. His parents were in the next town to buy supplies and Yibo was with his parents to bring them back home as they had to go back to work. And on top of that, Yibo's boss ordered Yibo's presence at a big meeting that morning. Yibo had actually wanted to take Zhan with him, as he didn't want to leave Zhan alone in the country house. But Zhan insisted on staying at his parents' house, pretending that he wanted to work on his laptop.
After finishing his yogurt, he picked up his cell phone, dialed a number he had known by heart for years but had never called, and did what he had been meaning to do for three days. He called the only person who might be able to answer some of his questions. It only rang twice before someone answered the phone. "Hello Zhan. I was wondering when you were going to call me." Said the deep male voice.
"Good morning sir, so you already know what this is about?" Asked Zhan. He was not surprised. Because he knows that these people know everything.
"You know who we are. Let's meet up."
"Where and when?"
"I'll send a car to pick you up. It will take you to me. About ten minutes."
"Okay. I'm ready."
"And Zhan?"
"Yes sir?"
"Well done."
"What do you mean?"
"That you called me. I'll see you in half an hour. I'm looking forward to it."
"Okay sir." Zhan said and ended the call. He ran into the house, quickly put on his jeans and a sweater, grabbed a jacket and went back outside. A black limousine pulled up as he stepped out of the door. An older man in a black suit opened the back door of the car and let Zhan in, then they drove off.
After a 20-minute drive, they arrived at a small zoo, Zhan got out of the car, saw the man he wanted to see and walked silently with him as they walked through the entrance and past a few animal enclosures like grandfather and grandson. They didn't speak until they reached a couple of tables by a snack bar and sat down. A couple of men in black suits stood a little way away from them and secured the perimeter.
The man sent one of the men to the snack bar to get two cups of jasmine tea, then finally addressed Zhan. "So you must have some questions for me, don't you?"
"Yes sir, and I suspect you can answer them for me." Zhan replied and took a sip of tea. "Delicious." He said and then looked the man in the eye. "You knew I'd call because you've had me watched since then, didn't you?"
"That's true, my boy. I was expecting you to call me sooner, though."
"I had to wait until I was alone. Otherwise I would have called sooner."
"I see. So you don't want to tell your agent friend everything yet?"
"That's not it. I needed time to think things over and put a few pieces of the puzzle together."
"Sure. And what do you want to know from me now, my boy?"
"Well, Grandpa, I want to know what my parents were like? What was my father like?"
"I've waited many years for you to call me grandfather. Your father, my son, was a wonderful, lovely, clever man. You inherited his eyes and your mother's beauty. She was a beautiful, intelligent woman with great ambitions. They loved each other very much and looked forward to seeing you. What made you think you were my grandson?"
"As I said, I've had a lot of time to think in the last few days. Thanks to my parents, Yibo and his parents, I've had nothing to do when I wasn't working on my laptop. And a few days ago I told Yibo a bit about the real me and since then I've been thinking a lot about that time. About how I met you and felt a strangely familiar feeling towards you. And the fact that you told me you had joined the Federal Intelligence Service after your son and daughter-in-law died in a fire in a birthplace. I hadn't thought about it for a long time, but when I thought about the chaos in my life, about the death of my physical parents and how they died, it finally came back to me. And believe me, I was shocked when I realized that my grandfather was the director of the Federal Intelligence Service and the father of my biological father."
"You were given your grandparents' contact details. Didn't you notice it then?"
"So you know that too? And no, my life was far too chaotic. I pocketed the note and resolved to call you and your wife, as well as my other grandmother. But so many things happened that I didn't get around to calling you."
"Okay. That's understandable. What else do you want to know?"
"Did you know where I was all these years?"
"Yes. I always knew everything about you."
"How?"
"What do you think? After I found out that the babies had been kidnapped, I went looking for you and found you. But by then you had already been adopted by your parents."
"How come you never approached them and told them you were my grandpa?"
"Because I thought it was for the best. Besides, they were always good to you. They loved and adored you from the start. I could see how much you meant to them. And you needed loving parents. And knowing that you were doing well with them, I set about finding out who had murdered your parents and the other couples."
"And did you find the perpetrators?"
"Yes, I found them. I was just a special agent back then. But yes, I found them. And I went after them one by one."
"And what about the babies? And were they maybe really after my birth parents? So I mean, were my parents the target?"
"The babies were already sold and we lost track of them. And no, they weren't after your parents. They didn't even know who your parents were. They were after the babies and a woman."
"Maybe Isla Isari?"
"No, not after her."
"What woman were they after?"
"After the mistress of a high-ranking politician at the time. The politician in question wanted his mistress and the baby to disappear. He was afraid that she would take the baby to his wife or blackmail him. So he hired a few petty criminals and ordered them to make the mistress and the baby disappear. He had never planned for all the babies to be kidnapped and sold abroad. And he didn't want all the couples to die in a fire either."
"Why did this never come to light?"
"Because he was a high-ranking politician and close friends with the president. It was all swept under the carpet. And you know what the irony of it all was? The mistress hadn't even been to the Birth Center that night. There were complications with the birth of her child and so she was taken to the hospital where an emergency C-section had been performed."
"Oh wow. I'm really lost for words. But how did you find out?"
"I asked the staff. A young obstetrician was on duty until 10 PM and accompanied the mistress' ambulance. She stayed by her side until the baby was born. But because she was at the hospital and not at the Birth Center, everyone assumed she had no useful information. I thought otherwise and went to see her. I spoke to her about the evening and wanted to know if she had noticed anything strange and she was thrilled to finally be able to tell someone that she was accompanying the mistress of a high-ranking politician. I then went to see his mistress, who had already been thinking about the fire in the birth house herself. After I told her who I was and who I worked for, she immediately told me that she thought the fire was meant to kill her and her baby. She told me which politician she was having an affair with and I confronted him with what I knew. He immediately confessed everything to me. After all, he knew that his friend the president wouldn't let him go to jail. Well, my hands were tied. But that doesn't mean he got away with it. Surprisingly, six months later the politician fell seriously ill from one day to the next. He died in agony within a week. It was suspected that he had been poisoned. But it was never possible to determine which poison it was."
"And what happened to his mistress and the baby?"
"They both left the country. The president himself made sure that she disappeared. As far as I know, she met a man abroad and married him."
"Ah, good for her."
"What else do you want to know?"
"Isla Isari. Did you know that she saved me back then and always kept an eye on me? And all the things she did?"
"To be honest, no."
"I'm not surprised. She was very adept at covering her tracks."
"Maybe so. But she's gone now."
Zhan sighed heavily. "I know. I was there when she died."
"You were there?"
"Mhm. I held her hand. And what about the names Kira Bell, and Joe and Terry Brice?"
"I know she wrote to you and wants money from you. The two brothers are her henchmen."
"Do you think I need to worry about the three of them?"
"No, not any more. We know where they are and are watching their every move."
"Why haven't you arrested them yet? They're murderers!"
"I know Zhan. And don't worry, we'll take action in two days."
"Why only in two days?"
"Because we're working with the US Federal Intelligence Service on this case."
"Ah, so it has to go their way because the three are American?"
"Yes. But don't worry. She can't get to you."
"Good."
"What are you going to do once she's arrested?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the Dark Purple Rose mission will be over. Isla Isari is dead. Pete Kapajewski is dead. Agent Lee is also dead. And Kira Bell and her henchmen will be arrested in two days. That means your friend's mission is complete. I assume he will then resume his undercover activities, right?"
"Yes, he probably will. Or no, I'm sure he'll go back to being an idol."
"And what are you doing then?"
"I'll go back to work in my office."
"Sure. But what I actually meant was, what will happen to you and your boyfriend? If he goes undercover again, he won't have as much time for you as he does now."
"Yes, unfortunately I'm all too aware of that. But what should I do?"
"Go back to work as a graphic designer and finish your training with us on the side. Get to know your grandmothers. Your mother's mother lives with us in the house. And after your training, you can work alongside your boyfriend."
"Me as an undercover agent for the Federal Intelligence Service?"
"Yes. You can still work as a graphic designer, of course. But maybe you'll think about my suggestion. We wanted you with us back then and we still do. You're a genius. An exceptional talent that we could really use in the Federal Intelligence Service."
"I'll think about it grandfather."
"Yes, please do. And it's nice to be called grandfather by you."
"I think it's nice that I have grandparents. I would like to meet my grandmothers. Preferably as soon as possible."
"I'd love to. You can come over any time. They'll be very, very happy. And you can also bring your boyfriend. We're all old, but we're open-minded and open-hearted."
"Thank you. I'll ask him."
"Good, I think we should make our way back now. I still have to work."
"Why are you still working at your age?"
"Why not? I'm old but still fit. I love my work and enjoy driving to work every morning."
"I understand." Zhan said. He and his grandfather stood up and walked slowly towards the exit. His grandfather drove him back to his parents' country house. As they said goodbye, the two hugged and promised each other that they would see each other again soon. And Zhan promised to think about his grandfather's offer.
Just five minutes after Zhan returned to the country house, his parents also came home. It had taken them longer because his mom insisted on buying some winter clothes for Zhan. Of course, Zhan had to put on and show off every single item of clothing. And then he told them about his meeting with his grandfather.
