Chapter 27
When they reached the city limits and finally left them behind, Zhan dared to speak again. "Where are we going?" He hoped he could engage Agent Lee in a conversation so that he might become careless and Zhan could do something. The question was, what should he do? What could he even do?
"You'll see about that. Now just shut up." Replied Agent Lee angrily. Zhan nodded silently and looked out of the window. They had now reached the country road, which was lined with forest trees and bushes. It was actually a beautiful sight because the sun's rays shone between the trees and bushes and it looked somehow magical.
They drove from the country road through a village, back on the country road, then along a dirt track, back on a country road, then another village and finally Zhan had fallen asleep, even though he had fought against it. He wanted to stay awake and see exactly which route they took to this ominous lawyer. But at some point, Zhan's eyes simply closed.
At some point, Agent Lee shook Zhan's shoulder vigorously. "Wake up already! We're here!" He shouted at Zhan.
Zhan opened his eyes, looked around in confusion and saw that they were standing in a parking lot in front of a small office building. He looked at his wristwatch and was shocked to realize that they had been on the road for four and a half hours. He also had no idea where they were. And he didn't have time to get a picture either. Agent Lee almost dragged him out of the car.
He dragged Zhan behind him to the entrance of the office building. There was no doorman and no security guard. Agent Lee rang a bell that said "Wong Law Office" and shortly afterwards the door was opened by a buzzer. They entered the building and went to the elevator, where Agent Lee pressed the three for the third floor. When they arrived on the third floor, a man, Zhan estimated him to be in his mid-50s, was already standing in the doorway to the lawyer's office.
They approached the man, who looked at them questioningly and confused. "Yes, please?"
"Tell him who you are." Agent Lee ordered.
"My... my name is Xiao Zhan." Zhan said, hoping to draw the lawyer's attention to the fact that he was anything but there voluntarily.
"Xiao Zhan?" The lawyer asked and then seemed to remember. "Oh yes. Please come in." The lawyer didn't understand what Zhan was trying to tell him with his eyes.
They entered the small office and went straight to the lawyer's desk. They sat down and Agent Lee told Zhan to give the lawyer the envelope. Zhan handed it to him, he opened it and took out the contents. When the lawyer realized it was Mrs. Isari's death certificate, his face went pale. "Oh dear." He said and asked them both for a moment.
The lawyer disappeared from the office and returned a few minutes later. He had a box with him, which he only opened in the presence of Zhan and Agent Lee after Zhan had confirmed his identity with his ID card. The box contained the will, a white envelope, the USB stick and a few securities.
"Very well then, I'll read the will." Said the lawyer.
"That's not necessary. Just tell us what Xiao Zhan inherits." Agent Lee ordered.
"But that's not how it works. Everything must be done correctly!" Insisted the lawyer.
"And I say it can be done." Said Agent Lee and drew his gun. "Go on!"
Now the lawyer's hands were shaking too and he finally understood what Zhan had been trying to tell him with those looks. But now it was too late and the lawyer had no choice but to do what this rude guy wanted him to do. "He inherits this USB stick." He said, pushing the USB stick to Agent Lee, who then handed it over to Zhan. "And he inherits the inheritance account, which has 288,638,913.38 renminbi yuan in it at this time. Also enclosed is a personal letter from Mrs. Isari for Mr. Xiao Zhan."
"Looks like we're both rich now." Agent Lee said to Zhan with a grin. Then he turned back to the lawyer and asked: "And where are the account details?"
"I have them here." The lawyer replied and pointed to a document.
"Good, can you access the account from here?" Agent Lee asked excitedly.
"Yes, I think so."
"Very well. Then transfer half of the money to my account." Agent Lee said and gave the lawyer a small card with his account details on it.
"But sir. I don't think I can transfer that much money in one day."
"Go!" Agent Lee ordered. The lawyer looked at Zhan questioningly. Zhan nodded to him and the lawyer set about transferring half of the money to Agent Lee's account. After less than two minutes, Agent Lee received a text message from his bank informing him that the money had been received and the amount. "There you go." Agent Lee grinned and cheered. He kissed his cell phone and then suddenly became serious again. "Oh yeah, there was something else." He said, pointed the gun at the lawyer and pulled the trigger. A circular hole appeared on the lawyer's forehead, who looked at Zhan in disbelief before his head simply tipped to the side.
Shocked, Zhan jumped up. "What did you do?" He would have run away if Agent Lee hadn't kept his gun pointed at Zhan now.
"Listen. He deserved it, just trust me. And don't worry. I won't do the same to you. I'll stick to my promise and not harm a hair on your head." Said Agent Lee. He put everything the lawyer had taken out of the box back into the box and handed it to Zhan. "Here, take your inheritance and do something useful with the USB stick. I hope there's something on it so that this damn agency can finally be shut down! The agents are sure to find new jobs quickly. But this director, this unscrupulous asshole, shouldn't get off so easily! Agent Nax will have had her reasons for not passing on the data, files and information she collected to her father, the sainted director. There might be something about him in the end. Hahaha. So let's go now. Take your box and let's get out of here."
"And where are we going?"
"Where do you think? I'll take you to the station. You can buy a ticket there and go back. In the meantime, I'm leaving the country!"
"You're really going to let me live?"
"Of course. Mrs. Isari must have had something in mind when she gave you this money. I suppose half the money should be enough for these purposes. Whatever the purposes are. Now come on." The agent said and Zhan followed him outside. At that moment, Zhan didn't care where he was going because he just wanted to get away from the lawyer's body and was glad he hadn't touched anything in the office.
Not even 10 minutes later, Agent Lee actually dropped Zhan off at the train station. A very small station with only two tracks. Zhan went to the ticket machine, pulled out a ticket and when the train arrived, he boarded it. He held the box tightly in his arms. And only when the train departed did Agent Lee leave. Apparently he wanted to make sure that Zhan got on the train and didn't just run off to find a phone somewhere to call the police, or worse, the agency. At least that's what Zhan assumed.
As Zhan boarded the rather small train, he hoped to ask one of the other passengers for a cell phone. But Agent Lee seemed to have planned all this better than Zhan thought. There were no passengers in any of the three compartments. Only after more than an hour's train ride did two passengers get on. They were old and had no cell phones.
After another half an hour, they arrived at Beijing Central Station. Other passengers had boarded by then. But no one had wanted to lend Zhan their cell phones. They didn't even care when Zhan told them that this was an emergency and that he had to report a murder. They didn't believe Zhan and probably thought he was a lunatic.
When he arrived at the main station, Zhan wondered what he should do now. Going to the agency was nonsense, as Yibo would no longer be there looking for him. Zhan didn't want to go to the office either, as he didn't want to worry Sia. And going home was also out of the question. Zhan was afraid that he would collapse there and not be able to do anything. So he could only think of one thing to do. The police!
He went to the cab rank, got into a cab and told the driver which police station he wanted to go to. The cab driver gave him a questioning look, but then just shrugged his shoulders and drove off. A little later, they arrived at the police station. Zhan went inside and straight to the registration desk. "I'm looking for Wen Rouhan!" He said.
The police officer shook his head: "First of all, tell me who you are and why you want to see the chief."
"I am Xiao Zhan. And I urgently need to speak to Wen Rouhan."
"And why?"
"I..." Tears rolled down Zhan's cheeks. He was desperate and didn't want to explain to this guy why he needed to speak to Wen Rouhan. Why did this police officer have to ask him that?
"Sir, are you alright?"
Zhan shook his head. "No. I need to talk to Wen Rouhan. I can do it..."
"Xiao Zhan?" He heard someone next to him ask. Zhan turned around and recognized Wen Rouhan. Zhan's heart really burst and he fell into Wen Rouhan's arms, crying. Wen Rouhan took Zhan to his office, where he gave Zhan a glass of warm water to calm him down.
As soon as the tears had dried, Zhan told him what had happened and didn't miss a single detail. Wen Rouhan listened carefully, informed his colleagues in the small town where Zhan witnessed the lawyer's murder and then turned back to Zhan, who said, "I didn't know Agent Lee would do this."
"I believe you Zhan. And you did the right thing. It's good that you came to me right away. I recorded your verbal testimony and will type it up later so you can sign it." Wen Rouhan replied and poured Zhan a cup of tea.
"And now what? What should I do now?"
"I'll take you home right now. Do you happen to have Wang Yibo's cell phone number?"
"In my cell phone. Which Agent Lee threw away."
"I see. Mhhh, well then there's nothing we can do. Come on. I'll take you home now."
"Thanks." Zhan replied and followed his neighbor outside to his car. They drove to the apartment complex, where Wen Rouhan took him upstairs to the apartment. Zhan immediately looked for one of those sticky notes on which he had written down Yibo's cell phone number. Just in case he lost his cell phone and needed to reach Yibo.
He picked up his house phone, dialed the number and after the second ring, Yibo picked up. "Where the hell are you?" Yibo shouted, almost dying of worry.
Zhan, who had been trembling and confused a moment ago, now spoke calmly: "It was all your fault Wang Yibo! You neglected your work, let me out of your sight and that's how Agent Lee was able to kidnap me! You didn't look after me like you were supposed to!"
"Zhan, I'm sorry. I... I'm coming to see you now."
"No! Stay where you are. I don't want to see you today. None of you agents. I hate you! You've ruined my life! I'm sick of you! I've seen enough dead bodies. I'm tired of watching people die!"
"Zhan! I'm coming to you!"
"I said NO!" Zhan shouted into the phone. "God damn it! Stay where you are! I do NOT want to see you! I'm just calling to let you know that I survived being kidnapped by Agent Lee. Unlike Mrs. Isari's lawyer! Whose forehead now has a hole in it!"
"What?"
"Don't come here. Don't call me. Just leave me alone. And I'm warning you. If I see even one of you agents near me, I'll spread everything about you on the Internet. I'll spread the word about who you really are! So you better get out of my way! I'll get back to you when I'm ready to talk to you!" Zhan ended the call without giving Yibo the chance to say anything back.
After the phone call, he went with Wen Rouhan to his apartment. At least for today, he would stay with his neighbor and try to process what he had experienced a little. He didn't really hate Yibo. But at that moment he simply couldn't and didn't want to see Yibo.
