Chapter 10
After Yibo came out of the shower dressed in Zhan's clothes, he received a call from Agent Nax and then told Zhan that he had to go to the agency and would be back soon. But Yibo didn't come back and Zhan wasn't supposed to see him again until Friday afternoon. Instead, a huge guy came to his place. A foreigner from Sweden, with blond hair cut very short, a height of almost 2 meters, broad shoulders and a grim expression on his face that seemed to say that he would rather be somewhere else right now, but not here with Zhan. And Zhan didn't want him there either. But what was he supposed to do? It was up to some high-ranking agents who he would probably never get to see.
Since he wasn't allowed to go to the office, he worked from home and managed to complete all his open work orders by Thursday morning. Actually, that would have been work for at least two weeks. But as he could only sit at home and do nothing else, he had done nothing but work from the morning until late in the evening. He had already received new requests by e-mail and phone calls. But he wanted to wait until after the party on Saturday evening before accepting anything.
On Thursday evening, Liam, his bodyguard's name, allowed him to go for a walk in the neighborhood. Zhan had to beg him to go outside. Usually, Liam only allowed him to enjoy the fresh air from the balcony. But that evening, he had finally gotten Liam to give in and join Zhan on his walk through the neighborhood, gritting his teeth.
On his way back, Zhan was almost at the front door of his apartment building when he bumped into Wen Rouhan. He had just returned from his shift and was still wearing his police uniform, so Liam probably had no problem with Zhan talking to his neighbor for a moment. Which was actually a good thing. They found out that Wen Rouhan had once again seen someone at Zhan's car the night before and this time even made a video of it.
Zhan asked his neighbor to send the video to him and then sent it on to Liam, who in turn sent it to Agent Nax when they were back at Zhan's apartment. Zhan has no direct contact with Agent Nax. He had already asked for her phone number several times, but so far he had not received it. And it looked like he wouldn't get it anyway. Nor would he get Yibo's cell phone number, which Zhan had also asked for several times.
On Friday at 2 PM, Liam finally drove to the agency with Zhan. But not just like that! After a phone call that Liam had made with Agent Nax in Zhan's apartment, they went downstairs to Liam's car, where he covered Zhan's eyes with black glasses, through which Zhan really couldn't see anything. Liam also, Zhan was sure, drove a few more detours, just in case Zhan tried to memorize the way.
After an hour, Liam helped Zhan get out of the car and then, holding him by the upper arm, led him into a building. As Zhan still couldn't see, he had to rely on his ears. What he heard were soft voices, typing on keyboards here and there, phones ringing and then echoing footsteps of himself and Liam. And finally, Zhan was allowed to take off the awful black glasses and look around.
Zhan realized that he was in a huge warehouse. A warehouse like those in factories. He couldn't see much, however, as there were a lot of areas protected by screens. He himself was standing in front of a desk, but it could just as easily have been a cupboard or counter. Liam was gone, but Yibo joined him, grinning. Zhan didn't feel like grinning and greeted Yibo grumpily with the words: "Oh, are we going to see you again?"
Yibo smiled sheepishly. "I'm... sorry. I had to fulfill some obligations as an idol. You understand that, don't you?"
Zhan shook his head in annoyance. "No! You said you'd come back and instead of you, this giant Liam came and wouldn't even allow me to go outside!"
"Don't be angry with Liam. He was just following orders." Now Yibo looked a little annoyed.
"And what was that about me having to put on these black glasses so I can't see?"
"That's standard procedure for non-members of the agency. The location must remain secret. And yes, for you too. Because..."
"Never mind!" Zhan interrupted him angrily and pointed to the desk with a nod of his head.
"Someone will come in a minute and hand over all the stuff you and I talked about." Yibo explained and, as if on cue, a man in a neat black suit with a balaclava to conceal his identity from Zhan arrived. Zhan began to feel like he was in a bad movie.
The man, who didn't bother to greet Zhan or tell him his name, pushed several small boxes onto the desk, then a black suit protected in a sleeve and matching black shoes. He was already turning to leave when he turned back to Zhan and said, "We want these things back complete and in the same condition!" Then he left, leaving Zhan speechless, while Yibo had already grabbed all the things and taken them to the car. Zhan wanted to go after him, but Liam stood in his way and handed him the black glasses again.
The next time Zhan was able to take the glasses off, he found himself in a small and terribly ugly office. The office of Agent Nax! She was sitting at an old rickety desk, tapping on a very thick file with both hands. Without a greeting, she got straight to the point. "This is all the information collected regarding Mrs. Isari. Of course you're not allowed to look at this file. But I wanted you to see this file so that you understand how important it is that we finally get her for her criminal misdeeds."
"Yes ma'am." Zhan said, assuming that she expected him to answer that. He was also a little distracted staring at the thick file. He guessed it was at least 10 centimeters thick and so overcrowded with documents that some of it was hanging out a bit. Zhan curiously tried to read what was written on the scraps he could see. But he couldn't read anything.
Agent Nax took the file and put it in a drawer of the desk and locked the drawer. "So, I think you've seen it long enough."
"If you say so, I guess I must have." Zhan replied cheekily. He could feel that his mood, which hadn't been good in the last few days anyway, was already on its way down to the basement. Or to put it another way, his already bad mood was about to get even worse.
"Xiao Zhan, I can understand why you're upset. I'm sure you're very unhappy that we can't show and tell you everything. But that's our standard procedure. Only agents with a certain clearance are allowed to be here and see everything."
"Never mind." Zhan growled and finally sat down on one of the two rickety chairs. No one had asked him to or allowed him to. He just did it, because he had no desire to stand there like a poor sinner who was about to be scolded by someone and would have to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness at any moment.
Agent Nax looked at him in astonishment, but said nothing and simply continued. "We are very grateful to you for helping us. However, this means that you will only do what we tell you or allow you to do. No solo actions! You will do everything Yibo tells you to do at the party. You will not talk to anyone alone and you will not try to ask anyone like this assistant of Mrs. Isari for any information about her! Do you understand that?"
"Yes ma'am." Zhan wanted to claw her eyes out. Why was she treating him like an idiot?
"Now that that's cleared up, read through these documents." She slid Zhan 15 pages of documents. Among them was a contract concerning the cooperation between him and the agency. Two pages concerned the contract. One page was about the confidentiality agreement. One page about how much money he would receive for his help. And then instruction after instruction. For example, how he had to handle the items borrowed from the agency.
Zhan read through everything and, after marking an X in the appropriate box to show that he had understood everything, put the place, date and signature at the bottom of each individual document. Agent Nax then took the documents, and the pen, back and sent Liam off to have them copied by a colleague. While Liam was gone, Zhan received a cash check for his past cooperation.
Zhan counted the amount on the bar check, which wasn't very high, and then put it away. And suddenly Agent Nax smiled and was much friendlier. "You have to understand that this is how we have to proceed. Because now that it's known that there's a traitor among us, we have to be even more careful." She explained gently. And now Zhan understood why everyone was going so crazy and treating him so unkindly. They were simply afraid. Afraid of failing because there was a traitor among them!
But before Zhan could say anything back, Yibo came into the office and explained that everything was ready, whatever that meant. Then Agent Nax nodded, Yibo left again and Liam came in. Liam handed her the documents and their copies, she also put them in her desk drawer and then sent Liam away. "You can go and enjoy your weekend. Agent Wang will take over again from here." She had said. Liam left and Yibo came back. A coming and going that annoyed Zhan.
After a brief whispered conversation between Agent Nax and Yibo, Yibo turned to Zhan and said, "We can go now."
Zhan nodded, stood up and had to put on his black glasses again. He was told to put his hands on Yibo's shoulders and then let himself be taken back to the car that way. After 25 minutes of driving, Yibo allowed him to take off his glasses. Zhan looked around and recognized the city center. "What are we doing here?" He wanted to know from Yibo.
"Nothing at all. We're just passing through here. It's still daytime and that means I can't walk around out there. The risk of being recognized is just too great." Yibo explained.
"But you do realize that it would be more believable to this woman that we've supposedly become friends if we'd been seen together at least once." Said Zhan.
"I can't. My fans." Said Yibo as if that explained everything. And yes, Zhan understood what Yibo was trying to say. Nevertheless, he thought that his thought was right and it would have been better if they had been seen together.
"Do you know Wang Yibo? When you talk like that, I seriously wonder what's more important to you. Being an agent or being an idol?"
"Both." Yibo replied and turned at the next street corner.
"Okay." Said Zhan. What else could he say? They remained silent for the rest of the journey. They only made one more stop at Zhan's office so that he could get his mail from the mailbox.
When they arrived at Zhan's apartment, Zhan retired to his bedroom where, at Yibo's request, he tried on the suit, which fitted very well. Afterwards, they ordered a pizza and salad together from the delivery service and waited on the balcony, enjoying the warm sunshine, until the food had been delivered. Their conversation hadn't really gotten going since the car ride. They only talked when there was something to say. Which honestly annoyed Zhan, but he didn't know how to change it either.
After dinner, Zhan was given an introduction to the tiny technical devices he received from the agency, then Yibo said goodbye as he had a talk show appearance that evening. He was replaced by Lee, another agent, who spoke even less than Liam had done. Zhan soon retired to the bedroom with his laptop and watched a movie. Afterwards, Zhan went to sleep. He was tired and wanted to end this stupid day.
