Kira watched with amusement as Alina attempted to use a lighter she had somehow managed to pull out of the back pocket to burn through the restraints. Kira had to give it to the girl, she was hellbent on getting it to work. It kind of reminded her of that scene in Charlie's Angels where Drew Berrymore had attempted to do it. Finally, Alina groaned in frustration and let the lighter drop to the ground.
"You wouldn't happen to know a spell or anything would you?"
Kira raised a brow and said, "My powers are sealed, my memories from years ago haven't returned yet either. So no."
"What good are you?" Alina groaned.
Kira would've been hurt by this usually. Now she was just pissed off.
"What good are you?" Kira countered, "Last I checked your last name is Barthe, doesn't that make you a witch as well?" Kira sighed as Alina grew silent. "Stravos is an ancient right? If he removed all of your weapons what made you think your zippo was going to work?"
Alina stared at Kira blankly, "What do you mean?"
"She means that Stravos removed the lighter fluid from your lighter," Amon said as he materialized before the two women.
Kira had to bite back the laugh that threatened to erupt from her. Alina looked pissed, not only was she completely vulnerable but Stravos had been fucking with her as well.
'Bastard.' Alina thought before eying this newcomer. "Who exactly are you? Did your master send you here to scare us?"
Amon gave Kira a look before releasing her bonds. He then raised a brow, "Is she serious?"
Kira sighed, "Alina this is our knight in shining armor."
Alina looked at Amon suspiciously. "You're not a vampire." She pointed out.
"No, I am not one of the cursed."
"But you're not a human or a witch either.."
Amon gave Kira a look and said, "I should've let Stravos keep her."
"I would never forgive you.." Kira began.
Amon looked at her in amusement, "Which is why I did not." He turned to Alina and said, "Does it matter what I am so long as I save your life?"
Alina contemplated this and turned to her cousin. She let out a sigh, realizing he would not release her until he had his answer. For once she had to just trust this man. A complete stranger, and one that was not human. She nodded her head and suddenly, she was not bound to the chair anymore.
"Where are we anyways?" Alina asked looking around the almost empty room.
Amon grinned, "In the basement of a church, Stravos has a very interesting sense of humor."
With a wave of his hand, they were outside of the church. Alina walked over to her bike and grabbed her helmet before looking back at Kira.
"I don't believe in coincidences," Alina said.
Kira smiled, "Neither do I."
"If you want to get in touch, your father knows how to find me. He's the only one that had always looked out." With that, Alina gave Amon another mistrustful glance before putting on her helmet. She revved her engine and sped off.
Amon turned to Kira and said, "I see I have to keep a closer eye on you."
Kira sighed and said nothing. That was the opposite of what she wanted him to do. She wanted to be able to take care of herself. However, she had a feeling that he liked her being helpless. She could ask Inferna to help her out, but she didn't feel as if Inferna would go against Amon's wishes. She also needed answers. Just who was Belail and why did he want her so badly?
Amon reached out and caressed her cheek, "What is on your mind love?"
"I just want to go home," Kira answered softly. 'Alina...that's who I will ask.'
Alina did not go straight home. She would rather get the punishment for rushing into the Stravos situation over with. Besides after an incident a few years ago she knew that Elliot and Kevin cared about her, and her recklessness worried them. The elevator dinged and Alina was not surprised to see Kristin still at her desk filling paperwork.
"They are waiting for you in his office," Kristin said not looking up from her work.
Alina sighed and started to walk towards Elliot's office.
"Glad to see you are okay kid." Kristin said as Alina passed her desk.
Alina could not help but smile. She continued towards Elliot's office and upon reaching it lifted her hand to knock. She paused took a deep breath and tapped on the door lightly. She did not wait for him answer, she simply opened the door and walked in shutting it behind her. Elliot sat behind his desk, and Kevin sat in one of the chairs with annoyance written on his face. To her surprise, her uncle stood next to the window that overlooked the city. He smiled and nodded to her.
'What the hell is he doing here.' She thought to herself as she took the seat next to Kevin. Elliot cleared his throat.
"You've done a lot of reckless shit in your life Barthe, but this recent stunt with Stravos was downright idiotic." Elliot frowned and said, "Luckily for you, the council has decided not to relieve you of your duties."
Alina sighed inwardly in relief. Despite her constant disregard for the rules, this was the only thing she had.
"Instead, you are on a special detail. The witches council would like for you to work with Lenwood Barthe on a special task."
Alina looked at her uncle who remained silent in curiosity. "What special task."
"I'm sure you are aware that the witch Stravos kidnapped was my daughter," Lenwood said pushing off of the wall and stepping forward. "He has agreed to make no further attempts, however, other ancients might not be so easily persuaded."
Alina looked at him with a raised brow, "Why exactly did he kidnap Kira?"
Lenwood looked at Elliot and Kevin and hesitated. At this action, Alina folded her arms over her chest.
"If the witches council wants me to work with you, an open line of communication has to be had. Any information I need to know can be shared with my boss and my colleague."
Lenwood grinned at her, "It's not like you have a choice in the matter really."
Alina frowned, "What is that supposed to mean."
"Should you refuse, you will be removed from duty," Elliot said glaring at Lenwood.
Alina let this roll over in her mind and Lenwood continued, "However if you trust these two then I will speak openly. Just know anything I say will not leave this room. If it does, I can not protect you from the Witches Council."
"Understood." Kevin and Elliot said in unison.
Lenwood nodded. "Very well. What is your experience with demons?"
"I have no experience with demons. Only a specially trained Hunter is permitted to go after demons. I only hunt vampires." Alina said before adding, "So if demons play any part in this you are better off recruiting one of those Hunters."
Lenwood laughed, "I will train you. We need you specifically. Although you have chosen not to practice the craft, you are a powerful witch."
At this Alina cringed. It was a part of her that she wished she could just give away. She had no interest in practicing the craft at all.
"Belail is trying to capture Kira. Although her powers are sealed if she fell into his hands, it could mean trouble. We are going to ensure that happens."
Alina felt her blood run cold. Hunting down the cursed was one thing. Demons were a whole different story.
"What about the man who came to our aid. Was he a demon as well."
Lenwood shook his head. "Belail and Amon are not demons. They are fallen. There is a difference. Demons can be killed, usually with magic. The Fallen are different they can only be killed with weapons of light."
"Fallen? As in Fallen angels?" Alina asked.
Lenwood nodded, "You are correct."
"And you are okay with the fact that your daughter is associated with demons and fallen?"
It was Kevin who spoke up, "The Barthe's are the only powerful bloodline that associates with demons and uses black magic."
"You know an awful lot about witches..." Alina said turning to him.
Kevin was about to reply but Lenwood spoke. "Amon is the least of my worries. He is protecting her so, for now, I can do nothing but allow him to do so."
"What exactly do you want me to do?" Alina asked still confused as to what role she was expected to play.
She did not practice the craft by choice, and she was not trained to kill demons. In her eyes, she was just as vulnerable as Kira whose powers had been sealed.
"For now, move in with Kira. Get to know her and watch her back. He is not going to send demons after her just yet. My guess is he will try to send more of the cursed after her."
Elliot sighed, "If that is all, we will begin compiling a list of possible vampires he will try to persuade. If that is all you are all dismissed. I'm sure Kristin is ready to go home."
Alina and Kevin stood and Alina looked at Lenwood. He had always looked out for her, for as long as she could remember. Always in the shadows. She can count on her hands how many times she had actually spoken to him. The last was right before she became a hunter at the age of seventeen. Yet what he was asking of her was a lot. On one hand, she wanted to walk away, lead a normal life. Yet even she knew that nothing in her life could ever be normal. She sighed and walked out of Elliot's office.
'I guess I will be seeing my cousin again sooner than I thought.'
