Chapter 7

Roxanne's P.O.V

When I awoke Klaus was still next to me. He looked so peaceful whilst sleeping. I thought back to last night and couldn't help but feel guilty about what he had told me. I know it wasn't my fault but I knew what it was like to be different than those around me.

I felt him shift from where he was laid next to me and knew he was waking up.

'Good morning love'

'Good morning Klaus. I suppose I should thank you for not leaving during the night again' I teased

He chuckled and rolled over so that he was hovering above me on the bed. I could feel my heart quicken and prayed he didn't notice although judging by his smirk, he had.

'Does this make you uncomfortable Roxanne?' he asked

I shook my head and he leaned in closer

'How about now?'

I could feel my heart beat even quicker and my breathing intensified. He leaned in even closer, our faces were mere centimetres away from each other. I could feel his breath on my face and I could see the different colours in his eyes. Those eyes which showed all of his emotions, no matter how hard he tried. I could tell. I wanted to lean in and kiss him so badly.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

I felt a gust of wind and Klaus was gone. I got up and went to the door.

'Rebekah!' I was surprised to see her 'How can I help you?'

'For starters, you can get dressed. Then you can accompany me to the village. We're going shopping' she instructed

'Alright. Allow me five minutes?' I asked

She nodded and then left. I summoned my maids who helped me dress and once I was ready, I left to find Rebekah.

Once I found her, we went out to the carriage where there was some guards waiting for us

'Your mother insisted on guards coming with us for 'protection'' Rebekah told me

'It's to keep up pretenses' I informed her

'Whatever. It's ridiculous' and she stomped over to the carriage

I watched her in disbelief already dreading the day ahead of me.

'Excuse my sister, she hates being reminded that society perceives women to be weak' I turned and saw Kol watching us

'It's fine. I understand her annoyance' I told him

'Enjoy your day' he winked

I went to join Rebekah in the carriage and my two favourite guards, Samuel and Xavier, joined us so I assumed they had been tasked with protecting us for the day.

'Roxanne. Lady Rebekah' Xavier greeted and Samuel nodded at us

'Why don't you address her by her title? I mean, she's a princess, and you're a lowly servant' Rebekah questioned

'Don't be so rude' I scolded her

'It's fine Roxanne, we don't mind. We don't address Roxanne by her title because she has asked us on many occasion not to and it is our job to do as she says, my lady' Xavier told her

Rebekah frowned, obviously displeased with his answer, so she turned to me

'That is ridiculous! They should treat you with respect' she exploded

'They do' I told her, 'And they know that I'm the Princess and that my word goes. No matter what'

She stayed quiet after that so I was confident that my threat had been understood by her. No – one was rude to my guards like that. Not even her.

We made it to the market whilst it was still early so it was still quiet. Xavier went over to a food stall and bought an apple then brought it back over to us. He handed it to me

'You didn't eat this morning'

'Thank you Xavier'

I started eating it as Rebekah made her way over to some of the stalls selling dresses. They were beautiful but I could tell by the look on her face that she wasn't impressed and that she had expected something better.

I began to talk to the stall owner who I knew quite well about some new fabric and designs she had received. She was definitely going to be the woman to design my wedding dress – if the wedding went ahead. I ended up ordering two new dresses from the stall before we moved onto the next one.

Somehow Rebekah and I spent most of the morning in the village at the market and after lunch we were joined by Finn and Elijah.

'Hello Princess. I hope you don't mind us joining you'

'Of course not Lord Elijah, and please, none of the fancy title stuff. It's Roxanne' I said to him

'My apologies'

'Why are you gatecrashing our girls day?' Rebekah asked her brothers

'We either joined you or joined Niklaus and Kol. You know how they get when they are together though' Finn explained

Rebekah nodded as she clearly understood the meaning behind the words but I was clueless. This family seemed to have a lot of secrets.

'Roxanne?' Xavier caught my attention, 'sorry to interrupt but we should return to the castle soon. We've heard of a rebel group on the move nearby'

'Of course Xavier, thank you' I replied

Much to Rebekah's dismay, we headed back to the carriage even though Finn and Elijah had only just joined us. We were very talkative on the returning carriage journey and once we were back at the castle, Elijah asked to see our library.

I showed him to the roomwhich was my favourite in the castle. It had floor to ceiling book shelvesfilled with thousands of books and grimoires from around the globe.
