July 2022 - MWDeval
Welcome to our interview for this month! We are with this talented author, MWDeval, who penned the winning story of our prompt contest, Worthy Torment.
Dark Fantasy Team: What was your overall experience while writing this story?
MWDeval: It was really rewarding. I wanted to get readers thinking about whether or not redemption was truly possible for Seoc, and if they really want to root for him or not. I've had ideas for a character like Seoc for a couple years now, and it was awesome to actually be able to put him in a story.
DF: What inspired you to write in Dark Fantasy?
M: I feel like fantasy in general allows you to get very creative and write whatever your mind can dream up. In dark fantasy you can put much more realistic characters in this world who make mistakes and have trauma. It allows your characters and themes to be different from the usual fantasy hero, only ever acting honorably.
DF: How would you describe your main protagonist(s) in one word and why?
M: Guilty. Seoc spent most of his youth on a battlefield where mature development isn't common. All he knew for a decade was war and bloodshed so during that time, he became quite monstrous. Now, near the end of his life, he wants to atone, but he fears he can't after everything he's done.
DF: Is there going to be any further series of this book? If yes, give a little teaser about it.
M: Possibly. I had an idea for a story that would take place in this books world but haven't worked out the details yet. Im working on a few other projects right now as well so it would probably be a while. Still, I want to explore Seoc more in the future.
DF: Who is your favourite author in Dark Fantasy and how did they inspire you?
M: G.R.R. Martin. He made me want to start writing for a couple reasons. I loved how his characters were never completely benevolent. They were real people put in these situations and it just kind of sparked something in me, and the way he developed them over time was incredible to me. He also stated in an interview that he wrote A Song of Ice and Fire as a book because the medium would allow him to go all out with his imagination without the constraints of a budget, and censors. This made me want to go all out with the books I write.
DF: What other genres interests you other than Dark Fantasy? How would you compare them with Dark Fantasy?
M: Other than dark fantasy or just fantasy in general, I get into scifi and other genres that allow writers to get creative.
DF: Tell us about your journey throughout writing this story. What inspired you to finish it?
M: As I've stated before, I had the idea for a character like Seoc for a while, but never a story to put him in. When I saw the prompt, the entire plot just popped into my head, and I had to write it.
DF: Let's assume you are a half breed of Werewolf and Vampire. When a fight break in between the two clans, who would you fight for and why?
M: That depends on the context and backstory. If Im a half-breed, which side raised me? Was I shunned by one or both sides? Whichever side I have the most emotional connection to would be the side I fight for. That's If I'd decide to fight at all.
DF: What are the goals you'd like to accomplish in the future whether at Wattpad or in general?
M: I just hope to write some stories that people find enjoyable. I'm an entertainer at heart and hopefully some people will find my work entertaining.
Thank you so much, MWDeval, for being with us and agreeing to our interview. Check out their work, Worthy Torment, to support our author!
