Chapter 1

Dark Dreams

Chapter 1

"Fili, please, stop!" Kili pleaded.

"No! This is your fault! It's all your fault!" Fili growled, keeping his arrow pointing at Kili's heart.

"I swear I did nothing! Please!" He pleaded, tears filling his eyes.

"Don't lie to me!" Fili spat, venom in his voice, burning Kili's heart.

"I haven't done anything! I promise! Please listen to me!" He pleaded,

"Listen to you? Listen to your lies?! Your poison! I will never make that mistake again!" Fili spat.

"Fili please, I love you, I would never do anything against you, please, just stop." Kili cried, tears falling down his cheeks, his voice breaking slightly in fear and sorrow.

"More lies!" Fili yelled. "I hate you and you hate me! You destroyed everything!" Fili yelled. Kili could hardly see through his tears but he didn't want to, he didn't want so see the hatred in his brother's face. "So long, brother" Fili spat before letting the arrow fly- fly right into his little brother's body.

Fili wrapped the blanket around his little brother as he slept, smiling fondly at him. "Shush." He whispered as Kili stirred, moaning in his sleep.

"Fili please." He mumbled, his face full of fear.

"It's ok, I'm here." Fili whispered. Kili continued to mumble and toss and turn before suddenly he cried out, his eyes snapping open in fear. A few dwarfs stirred slightly in their sleep at the sound and Thorin looked up from where he sat at the edge of the camp.

"Fili." Kili whispered, fear shaking his voice.

"It was a dream, it's ok; I'm here." Fili said, hugging his brother who clung to him like a lifeline.

"Fili." Kili whispered again, trying to reassure himself his brother was real. Thorin smiled slightly at his nephews and sighed.

"Boys, try and get some rest, we have a long journey ahead of us." He said and Fili nodded.

"He's right." He said, lying down on the cold ground. Kili however, didn't move. He just sat and stared at the spot where he had been sleeping, fear sparkling in his eyes. "Kili, come on, it was just a dark dream, it's fine." Fili said and Kili nodded but he couldn't convince himself, he couldn't chase the terror from his veins. "Kili." Fili said, softly but Kili refused to move. "Do you remember that song our mother used to sing? When you were far too excitable to sleep she would sit you on her lap and sing to you and you would drift off in a moment." Fili said with a distant smile.

"Yeh" Kili whispered. "I remember." He said and he could almost hear the sweet melody. "I wonder if she is still singing for us, back home." He said quietly,

"I'm sure she is, in fact, I'm certain of it." Fili said, smiling, "Come on now, we must rest."

"I'm not tired, it's fine, you sleep, I'm fine." Kili said, trying to hide the fear that was drowning him inside. Fili sighed, what could have scared Kili so much? What had happened in his dream? He wondered

"Are you sure?" He asked and Kili nodded. "Ok." Fili said with a sigh, letting his body relax and closing his eyes. Kili sat closely at his side, watching his brother, trying to stop himself from trembling. He knew it was a dream, it had to just be a dream, but it had felt so real. Kili shivered and tried to push the dream from his mind but no matter how many childhood memories he thought of, how many beautiful meadows or baskets of kittens he thought of, it was still there, lurking at the back of his mind, haunting him, and he knew it wasn't going to let him go any time soon.

Thorin looked over his shouldered to where the young dwarf sat, huddled up by his brother. He sighed, getting to his feet and walking over to his nephew.

"Kili." He said and Kili raised his head. "What is troubling you?" Thorin asked, sitting down next to him. Kili shook his head.

"It doesn't matter; you have more pressing matters to worry about." Kili said and Thorin smiled.

"Nothing more important than my nephew." He said and Kili sighed.

"It was just a dream, it's nothing." Kili said.

"If it was bad enough to scare a brave lad like you I think it must be a little more than nothing." Thorin said. "Come, tell me what you dreamt." Thorin said. Kili looked down at his brother, his fingers twisting nervously with the edge of the blanket.

"I dreamt Fili hated me." Kili said, his voice shaking slightly. "He told me I had destroyed everything, he told me he hated me and that it was all my fault." Kili said.

"That what was your fault?" Thorin asked, his brow furrowed slightly.

"I do not know, he would not tell me." Kili told him. "But then..." Kili began, looking back down at the blanket.

"But then what?" Thorin asked and Kili closed his eyes and sighed before looking back up at Thorin.

"Then he killed me." Kili said quietly.

"I see." Thorin said slowly. "Kili, you know your brother loves you more than anything, you really have nothing to fear, it was a dark dream, the total opposite of reality, a lie of the brain." Thorin said and Kili nodded.

"I know...but it felt...it felt so real." Kili whispered, trying to control his emotions.

"I know, but it was not." Thorin said, patting his nephew on the back. "Come on, try and get some rest." Thorin said and Kili nodded, lying down beside his brother, trying to banish his dream from his thoughts, though he knew the attempt was futile.
