Chapter 14 - Confessions
Billy struggled frantically against the wolf trying to get free from his grasp. He kept screaming her name but Rue refused to turn around and walked with that yellowed eyed freak of nature into the saloon.
Several other wolves decided to join the parade as he was dragged down the street. He tried to grab for his other gun but couldn't get a grip, as the wolf seemed to know what he was doing and would whip him about making grabbing his gun impossible.
They dragged him down an alley and Billy knew this was going to get ugly fast and Ruechari needed him now. He had to get free. Just as this thought entered his mind the wolf let him loose.
Billy scrambled to his feet. The alley led to a dead end... the irony was not lost on him and his passage out was filled with more wolves than his one gun could handle. There was no way this wasn't going to end without bloodshed, his and theirs.
He cocked his gun and yelled, "COME ON!"
He taunted the wolves to attack but they just stood there unmoving and it was unnerving. Suddenly, they parted and a very large black wolf walked through their midst stopping about a foot before him.
"You wanna be first! Fine by me!"
"Billy! STOP!" Jujube hollered and Billy froze.
"Jujube! Where's Jasper? And who the hell is that guy?" Billy said pointing to Van Helsing, "and what's with the wolves? I swear if someone doesn't answer me soon I'm going to start firing."
The wolf transformed before him. An older man stood there, his one eye slightly mangle but he couldn't help noticing he had the same amber glow as the vamp that took Ruechari.
"You're to blame for this mess. We had him where we wanted him. It was her plan and she executed it flawlessly until you came in guns a blazing, mouth a running. What the hell were you thinking?!"
"I was thinking of saving Rue from that monster. She was out cold."
He watched as Jujube shook his head in denial.
"No, Billy. That's what she wanted him to believe. She knew she'd have to get in close. She'd have to catch him unaware. It would be her best chance to strike and now..."
Billy dropped to his knees as the gravity of the situation hit him. "I've done this... this is why she didn't want me to come... not just for my protection but for hers... she put herself in harm's way because of me."
"You gonna sit there moping about it or are you gonna do something about it?"
Billy looked up at the figure all dressed in back. "And you are?"
"Van Helsing... look we have time for proper introductions later. Now how are we getting Rue away from that maniac?"
"My pack would have listened to me, when we had the element of surprise but if I go in there a human. Drake will know he doesn't have a hold on me. If I go in as a wolf he can get control of me again."
"What of Rue, you just going to leave her high and dry?" Jujube asked.
"No but it will be left to you to drive him out of that saloon, back to the streets. We will take it from there."
"Us? Drive him out to the street. How?" Van Helsing said.
"Yes, he believes us dead. If we reveal ourselves..."
"If we reveal ourselves he'll know the wolves let us live there is no way..."
"Enough!" Billy said. "Less talk more action!"
"Agreed," Doc said, "We'll be waiting." He transformed back into a wolf and his pack followed him out of the alley.
"Well what's your idea, big shot? To storm right in there? Because that idea worked so well for you the last time," Van Helsing said.
"No, I plan on call him out here. I believe just the idea that I'm not dead will make him curious enough to want to find out why?"
"Fine, I'll cover you from the roof tops," Van Helsing said, cocking his crossbow.
Billy made to move towards the saloon but Jujubee's hand stopped him. He looked down at it and up at the rather cross look on Jujube's face. "Tell me, after everything, it was lie. Something Drake made her see. Tell me you didn't betray her."
Billy angrily, said, "We don't have time for this."
Jujube pushed Billy backwards. "Make the time, because if it's true. It will be me not you that will call Drake from the Shadows. If you betrayed Ruechari you're nothing but a liability. You'll get her killed."
Billy pushed Jujube out of the way and stormed towards the saloon.
Jujube pulled out his bow and shot an arrow that landed at Billy's feet, tripping him in the process. He strode over to him, looking down at him.
"Drake can take hold of her mind. She needs to be mentally clear to fight him. You're going to get her killed!"
Billy rolled to his side. He wanted to kill Jujube right now. Who knows what Drake is doing to her at this very moment. They were wasting time but he knew Jujube was right. He was not the one to go charging in and save Ruechari. Not this time.
"Fine, but I'm sticking close and at the first hint of trouble. Don't expect me to stand there idle."
Jujube stayed silent. He was still seething over the fact that Billy was unfaithful. He could not believe... Ruechari... What must she be thinking? Feeling?"
He simply nodded and walked away.
Billy watched Jujube take his place. It stung but he knew it was the best thing for Ruechari. He had done her wrong. He only hoped and prayed he get a chance to make a mends.
Jujube stood outside of the Saloon. "Drake! You Coward! You thought you left me for dead! Well you were wrong. Come and get me!"
Drake sat at a table inside the saloon. Across from him Ruechari sat, not saying a word. Seeing her lover with another had broken her. He smiled and reached for her hand. "Don't worry my, sweet. I will dispatch the Injun and you and will talk of our future together."
But instead of going out himself. He called together more than a handful of his vampires and gave them the order.
"Go out there! Any opposition you may face, kill them all. Fail me, and don't bother to return."
The Vampires nodded and headed out the saloon.
