Chapter 1

Ever since Nikki can remember, she has always been a good daughter and student but everything changed when she left home to study at a university.  Something went terribly wrong that prevented her from finishing her degree, which left her feeling depressed and forced her to seek employment while having a vague idea of what her future would look like.  Her dream of having a happy and successful life was now, to her mind, nothing but a dream since she is now on a plane en route to an island that she never even knew existed until a few months ago when she read the newspaper advertisement:

"A private firm is interested in hiring a "Personal Assistant to the Company President".  The applicant should be female, aged between 19 and 21, needs to have a sense of humor, strong personality, charm, willing to undergo extensive training to meet the work demands, interested in travelling, and is trustworthy.  No previous work experience required.  Generous salary compensation awaits the successful applicant.  Interested applicants may submit their resume via email."

That was all it took to make up her mind that if she wanted to travel the world like she planned then this would be the best way to do it.  After all what possible harm could come out of trying to apply for the position, right? The email address provided in the ad was a generic one that didn't actually give her an idea of the company that she would be working for.  This added fuel to the fire, so to speak, and without hesitation she sent her resume.  She still believed in good luck despite the misfortune that has befallen her while studying at the university, which she felt that only she was to blame for what happened, only herself and nobody else.

Her parents were a bit hesitant when she first informed them of her plans but countless talks and pleadings eventually paid off.  They gladly agreed to let her go on the premise that she would call them at least twice or thrice a month (after all, international calls can be pricey).

So here she was, by her lonesome, sitting on a small plane with just a few strangers and fervently praying that she would not have any misfortune along the way.  She had to endure, however, one transit flight prior to arriving at her final destination.  Nikki was jolted out of her musings to the flight steward's announcement that the plane would soon be landing and all passengers should put their seats in an upright position and attach their seatbelts.  Soon enough the plane was on the runway and everybody was getting ready to exit the plane.

Nikki took her hand-carry luggage from the overhead compartment and checked that she had her passport and the necessary documents on hand, just as her father reminded her, to easily breeze through the customs counter.  A million things were going through her mind as she exited through the tunnel towards the airport --- what would my boss look like?  Would he or she be easy to work for?  Can I really do this or do I just run the risk of getting my ass kicked back home?  How do I conduct myself?  And, before she knew it, she was in front of the customs desk.  The officer didn't take long in checking out her credentials.  In fact, if Nikki were more observant, she would have seen the surprised expression on the man's face after he checked the name of the company that she was to work at – but she was too busy with her own musings to notice.

"Go right on ahead miss.  Just go through the door on the right and you'll see the area where luggages are being deposited from the plane”, says the customs official with a smile on his face.  Nikki just absentmindedly nodded while she was busy thinking about the next set of instructions given by the travel agency that got in contact with her.  She wrote it all down in her pocket notebook....  Hmmmm, where the heck is it? Ah yes finally!

Sure enough there was the piece of paper with the instructions just as it was dictated to her 2 days ago -- You'll be met by someone at the airport with your name on a placard.  Further instructions will be provided by whomever you will be meeting there.
