The Cloak

I woke this morning with a great smile on my face. I just had that's feeling that it was going to a good day. The sun was shining over the city of Ridet and though the small window of our little village hut. I could smell my mother cooking oatmeal in the main room. Yep, this was definitely going to be a good day.

I looked across the room to see my younger brother, Hadi, still asleep. his messy, dark brown hair looked almost blond in the light of the rising son. Papa had gone to work long ago. Mama was in the main room making breakfast and was getting myself ready to help her.

I headed into the main room to see if I could help my mother with breakfast. She had her long, brown hair all tied up in a bun behind her head and a warm smile on her face. "Good morning Helia." She's said to me softly "Good morning Mama." I replied while climbing up to get the bowls from the cubord. Hoping down I handed them to Mama.

"Thank you" Mama said as I handed the bowls to her. "Your welcome" I quickly answered. Then I asked "Could go over to Ms. Martha's house today? I told her I would help her with her chores." "Sure thing as long as you get your chores around here done." She replied "Yes Mama" I said while quickly hurring of to get my brother up and start the rest of my chores

Ms. Martha was an older lady in the community. She helped my mother with me when I was really young and I have known her ever since.

A few hours later I had finally finished my chores. It had taken a lot of work. The Sun was now high in the sky and the heat of a the day was getting to everyone. I went to the garden to go check with Mama to see if I could still go to Ms. Martha's house. She was showing little Hadi how to weed out small vegetable garden. "Mama!" I yelled as I came outside.

When I turned the corner to see her, I thought I saw her use magic "Did you just use magic?!" I asked my mom loudly, she was shocked. She gave me a look that reminded me that it was kind of taboo. Then her face lightened up. "No Hunny, I didn't. " she said smiling.

I sighed and remembered why I had came there in the first place. " Hey Mama , can I go over to Mrs. Martha's now?" I asked. "Sure thing" she answered. Just wait till I get that disguising cloak on you, ok?" "Oh mama!" I cried " Do I have to?!" I hated when she used magic at all, no matter the purpose. But it was safer than going out and having the palace guards find me, for the king wanted me in chains.

The disguising cloak was a cloak that once I put it on made me look like a totally different person, which was a good thing since my black and white hair can draw a lot of unwanted attention. I usually had it on 24/7, but it tires Mama out over time and every now and then she needs me to take it off so that she doesn't fade away. Magic is such a tricky thing!

So, I sat down and waited for Mama to come and get the disguising cloak. She was the only one who could get it since you needed magic to pull it out of thin air. Ok that wasn't entierly true. If I wanted to, Mama could show me how, but she said I was to young and that she would teach me when I was older.

As I sat there, I thought of what an inconveinece this must be for Mama. I mean she has to stop whatever she is doing, to do somthing she said she would never do.I felt sorry for her. Then I got an amazing idea! I would go without the cloak!

I hated to see her use any magic at all, and what would it matte. As long as the palace gaurds didn't catch me, I would be fine. I would be disobeying her, but even she said tha somtimes rules had to be broken.

So I made up my mind. I was going to go out without the cloak. So off I went, I didn't care what my mom said. I was going out without my disguising cloak and I was going to be proud of it.

At first it was going great ,I was enjoying it, though a lot of people gave me strange looks. Like I cared. Seriously, I wasn't going to get put off by some rude people's stares.

It wasn't until I passed the palace gate that someone called out to me. "Hey you!" He yelled "get your hands up you Helia!" (A/N remember there is more than one Helia)I looked over. It was a palace gaurd with his gun ready! I looked over and started to panic.

What was I going to do! I looked around for a place to run or hide, maybe even something to protect myself with. Then, out of nowhere, a burst of energy came out of me and exploded. I could hardly tell you what it felt like if I wanted to. It knocked back all the guards in range. That caught the attention of some other gaurds who came rushing over.

I was so scarred, I couldn't think. All I could think was run. So I ran. Up and down the streets of Ridet, I ran. I turned corners and looped around a bit to try to keep the gaurds off my trail, but that didn't work. It seemed that wherever I went they were ready.

It only took me five minutes to get the point of complete exhaustion. I felt light headed, but I had to keep going. I turned the last corner to find to my horror that it was a dead end! I looked back and the gaurds were right there. "Halt" they demanded. I stopped. There was nowhere else for me to go. High walls towered above me on all sides.

As the gaurds moved in I started to have the closest thing I had ever had to a heart attack. Then, I just couldn't hold it together anymore. My knees collapsed and I blanked out because of the fear, and I fell to the ground.
